Cronulla Sharks slam NRL over poor handling of women’s com

The NRL will announce at 10am this morning that the Sydney Roosters, St George-Illawarra Dragons, New Zealand Warriors and Brisbane Broncos will be part of a four-team inaugural women’s competition.

The Sharks have led the way in the growth of women’s league, boasting close to 800 female junior league and league tag players - a major factor in the club hosting last year’s women’s World Cup.

Cronulla were also the first club in history to contract a women’s player to a full-time contract in Jillaroos captain Ruan Sims.

They have since contracted 34 players over the past two years with their current under-18’s Tarsha Gale Cup team undefeated and leading the competition.

Despite a public pledge to cultivate and support the growth of women’s league, NRL head of football Brian Canavan and Tiffany Slater, manager of women’s elite program told the Sharks that they were being overlooked due to “geographical spread”.

“I’m extremely disappointed and dumbfounded by the decision,’’ Sharks CEO Barry Russell said.

“The focus our club has given to the women’s pathway, from the Tarsha Gale team, to the introduction of League Touch and the commitment to offer the same opportunities to women as we do men, which all make this decision difficult to comprehend.’’

We have been at the forefront of the womens game, as have Newcastle and the Dragons.
What a rort for the rorters to be involved. Canavan has strong ties to that club still obviously

.Sounds like the womens league will have "mismanagement "in common with the mens. Womens game is an important part of the puzzle if professional Rugby league is to survive,or even prosper.

I hope this is not cut and dried and the Sharks can be part of it.

Good on Barry and the club for kicking up a stink about this. Currently the lead story on the Telegraph online. Nothing will change but we need to be pushing back on stuff like this now we're one of the heavyweight clubs.

Honestly we all know why its 4 teams, how would Peter Beattie remember any more then 4 teams for this comp, we need to keep it simple for him

Well at least this mirrors the NRL
other clubs develop players only for the Rooters to come along and poach them.
Next they'll be calling them their juniors

So what happens to our players? Are the nrl expecting they drift off to the roosters or st George?

The reasoning is because the other clubs give them a geographical spread...
Roosters have 8 fans, how does that help

Don't worry we have Scroat Morris-scum as our bestus everesttus No1 supporter. He will start throwing his weight behind this obvious injustice.

You mark my words, he will kick some arse.

In the words of the great Geoff Toovey "There needs to be an Investigation into this"

Seriously corruption at its best. Canavan is a nice enough bloke but seriously some under the table dealings have happened here. This is a really bad look for the game and an ugly look for the powers above.
