Dragons 5th in Sydney????
That is woeful .
They should be first or at least 2nd.

Check the figures here, there's not a great deal in it.

In Sydney (presumably this includes includes Campbelltown, Wollongong and Gosford), home games average for 2010 (top five):

Canterbury 20670
W Tigers 18086
Souths 17355
Parra 17080
Dragons 16820

Broncos (35032) and Titans (17877) make up the top seven in the NRL.

IMO, anything over 15K is good.

FTR, Sharks are last by a lot on 10551

Combined Home and Away average figures are perhaps more representative (top five in NRL):

Broncos 25992
Dragons 20527
Canterbury 18944
W Tigers 18791
Parra 17892

Dragons actually have the highest Away crowd average with 290806. Daylight to second (W Tigers 233936).

It's the nature of success, I'm sure our numbers will see around a 20-30% increase in membership numbers due to our GF win alone. For the record in terms of memberships (ticketed and non-ticketed) Souths were first for 2010, with Saints 2nd. Crowd attendances don't necessarily give a good indicator of support, you're also relying on the opposition for numbers as well. How many Manly fans would travel to Cronulla or the Gong for example? Sharks biggest problem is memberships, it's a clubs guaranteed income and lifeline, Sharks' memberships are low, very low. If they can sort that out they'd be in much better shape.

Dragons are no different to any other club, you have the fanatics and the casual fan. Bulldogs, Eels, Souths, Dragons, Tigers and Panthers have probably the largest supporter bases in Sydney. The relative success of the team determines who sits where in the pecking order in terms of membership numbers / crowd attendances. Eels would have jumped significantly last year, but I suspect their numbers will dwindle for next year.

The problem with Cronulla is they just don't have the numbers that can show up week in, week out even when they're losing. Then you don't get opposition fans going to your home games because it's seen as an easy game and a waste of time for anyone other than the most dedicated. The only way Cronulla can turn it around is to get a few years of sustained success going and get people wanting to go with their families.

If the Panthers have one of the largest supporter bases in Sydney, then they also have the laziest. This year they had even less members (2839) than Cronulla. And they had the 3rd smallest crowds (13057 avg) this season, the only Sydney team they beat in crowd averages was...Cronulla. Keeping in mind those crowds were in a year they finished 2nd.

The only reason they don't have whispers of imminent doom like Cronulla and other clubs is because they have a leagues club that seems to be made of solid gold.

Just because they're rich doesn't mean they are popular. I don't put them on the same level as the other clubs you mentioned. Bastards should have been culled in 1999 instead of us.

IMO, we did have a near sell out in the home semi against Manly. 18K the week before against Souths, and there were more than that against Manly. The 15K doesn't match what I saw.

Either way, there's nothing wrong with the average and it'll improve in 2011.

I go to all the Kogarah games carcar, have since R2K in 2003. This year I went to a couple of Wollongong games as well, and the Gold Coast and Brisbane games. Plus all the finals and grand final of course. So it was 13 games in total this year.

Hurt the budget a bit as I travel interstate, I think I clocked up about 25,000 kms getting to games. I trust you're not trying to compare the size of our wangs carcar.

Since when is the capacity of Shark Park 11,000? It has a similar capacity to that of most suburban grounds. Such a low membership number is not a valid excuse.

However, if you want to criticize 6 game passes as invalid members, the sharks offer a flexi 5 membership, which is 5 games, which classifies you as a ticketed member. Obviously none of us have access to the finer details of what membership types make up the numbers, but again you really should look in your own backyard before you criticize other clubs. The sharks aren't playing on an uneven playing field, they just aren't getting the numbers, it's simple fact. There are obviously many factors contributing to this such as onfield performance, smaller fanbase numbers, off-field woes etc etc. However they are still falling short, in a big way. There is no way to sugarcoat it.

Shark Park fits about 20,000 mate. If you'd bother to read, I said you wouldn't find a SEAT for 11,000 people at Cronulla.

I would have a guess and say that the "Flexi 5" option at Cronulla isn't real popular, as it is only a GA ticket. More people would buy a 5 game Reserved Seat at Wollongong or Kogarah than a 5 game GA pass.

The Sharks should just add an extra dollar onto ticket prices, give everyone a sticker, and claim EVERYONE that walks through the gate as a member. 200,000 members! Awesome.

Maybe when the Dragons count the people that come through the gate for their home game in the last round, they add a few extra... then when the NRL do the count for the NRL run "Home Final" the real number comes out?

Probably nothing different from most other clubs that seem to count seagulls as spectators.

I would guess most of our members are GA. You've just summed up your fanbase perfectly though. I can guarantee there are at least 9-10,000 seats shark park, so where is this 7,000 seat shortfall you speak of? You're comparing your ground to two grounds that have two of the largest hill's in the NRL, and speak of not enough seats in comparison? Get a grip. Wollongong an entire length of the field is a hill, and likewise Kogarah with a few seats thrown in front.

Maybe at Shark Park. But in this case at Kogarah, it's more likely the opposite is true.

Indeed, crowd figures are unreliable at various times, so at least we can agree on that.

At the final in 2009 against Parramatta (another NRL contolled match) the crowd was just under 18,000 and that looked right to me. The 2010 final against Manly 15.5K figure was just wrong imo.

As I said I've been to every Kogarah game since 2003. Not giving myself a wrap here but I have managed to get a handle on crowd numbers over the last eight seasons. Plus the vast majority of posters who were at the game agreed it was more than the 'official' 15.5K figure. We have eyes and ground familarity. It's not unusual to 'pick the crowd' amongst mates. The regulars are usually within a few hundred.

Plus I am very aware of the evolution of the ground. The official capacity at Kogarah has increased from about 18,000 to over 20,000 in recent years.

There were 20,847 there in 2009 for the Sharks game. FTR I tipped 20,500 that day.

It was around that time that Police asked for the crowd be capped at 18,000 (not sure why - traffic control was reported somewhere).

I thought it was over 19,000 at the Manly game and that would have breached the police cap. Read into that what you like. The week before it was a little over the police cap at 18,274. The Manly game had more people than that.

When the crowd figure came up, it said 15,570. There was no way they were going to fit another 3,000 people in there. It was a big turnout.

Not tough enough to be a part of the Mick and Ivan reunion road trips though.....

On the positive side of things I shall be quitting one of my 2 weekend jobs in February with the intention of attending more than just Kogarah Sunday matches next year.
