Manly V Tigers 17,532
Titans V Raiders 11,378
Bulldogs V Dragons 29,641
Sharks V Knights 15,564
Roosters V Penrith 12,746
Storm V Rabbitohs 15,872
Parra V Warriors 12,102

Good round. Makes up for the disappointment of Round 1. Roosters and Titans disappointing, but the rest are around par or exceed expectations (well mine anyway)

Crowd totals after R.2 for seasons 2007-12

2007. 310,015
2008. 306,956
2009. 315,610
2010. 286,388
2011. 313,508
2012. 307,884

While its still very early, crowds are down on last season by 5,624 or 1.8 percent. Obviously the rain Sydney and Canberra copped in R.1 didn't help.

Have you got all the numbers from 2005 onwards?

It'd be good if each week you kept doing the combined round aggregate but also the averages up until that point.

2005 is important as the peak average reference year despite their being fewer games and a lower aggregate as a result.

The true comparison needs to be 2010 for aggregate and 2005 for averages.

I absolutely hate seeing so many empty seats! What is it going to take for fans to flock to games in numbers? Even the 29k at the Bulldogs game was under par, Games like that should be pushing 40k!

This got me thinking, which games had the most empty seats. Obviously it comes down to the stadium more than anything.. but anyhow..

1. Bulldogs/Dragons ~ 50k seats
2. Roosters/Panthers ~ 33k seats
3. Titans/Raiders ~ 16k seats
4. Storm/Rabbitohs ~ 14k seats
5. Broncos/Cowboys ~ 9k seats
5. Eels/Warriors ~ 9k seats
7. Sharks/Knights ~ 6.5k seats (holds 22k right?)
8. Manly/Tigers ~ 2.5k seats

So to conclude this pointless list, avoid games at big stadiums if you don't like the site of seats. Also avoid cricket.

Official crowd: 12,102... looked more than that

ha ha, if we had a dollar for every time someone added the phrase "...looked more than that" after a crowd figure we wouldnt need the TV rights deal!

To be fair its an ok crowd for a Monday and no sub-10,000 crowds for the round so no complaints really.

2suggestions for Doggzfan4
1.some Victorians believe 9 super-impose virtual spectators on the empty seats. Perhaps we could ask them to actually do yhis
2. SomeAFL grounds put giant canvas ads over sections of the ground not in use.

Does anyone know what the rough weekly gates are for the NRL per round?

Say for example the NRL were to drop all prices by 25%, that would be about $25,000,000 a year at a guess - $125,000,000 over 5 years or roughly about 1/4th of the non-grant money from a $1,000,000,000 broadcast deal.

Would a 25% reduction entice people?

Its a rational strategy. Not only would it boost general admittance figures (and therefore total revenue) it would boost food and beverage returns, merchandising sales, and the overall NRL brand reputation. You dont even have to increase attendance by the full 25% for it make it worthwhile:
As long of the spending behviour of the new attendees is consistent with the exisiting attendees the maths are:

Gate reveneue reduced by 25% = Gate Revenue 75%
Additional Attendance: +15% = GAte Revenue +15%
Food and beverage = +15%
Merchandising = + 15%
PR = +intangible but positive
Security/Ground attendnts/Cleaning = -5%
Transport Links = better case for upgraded services long term

Many people spend more on food than on tickets!

Australia has too many ground's and alot of ground are over generous with there capacity's.

Not convinced it is about $'s on the whole. Getting a ticketed membership at most clubs means that attending the game is very reasonably priced compared to other leisure pursuits or a night in the pub.
Facilities at the grounds, family friendly KO times and safe areas, getting fans hyped up to support their club and generally a great experience and atmosphere at the game is what will bring people in. We are not winning the media battle, until we do we will not have the hype that will make attending a game a "must do event".

Agree with you re buying a membership, its certainly a lot cheaper than buying a ticket at the gate if you plan on going to a few games.

The Storm (or AAMI Park) have increased their GA entry by $5.00 ($30.00 per game) which is disappointing if they want more people at games, yet the Rebels and Melbourne Heart only charge $25.00.

Well I know this is only ONE person but (and I am a member of a number of places) the fact is prices are through the roof! Honestly you take a family out you will fork out $350 in a competitive marketplace. I would RATHER go to an AFL or a Rugby Union game as the prices are MUCH better.....not to mention whoever was the fruitloop at ANZ Stadium who put half strength beer....well that is one way to NOT get me going to that stadium!

Honestly, the NRL needs a serious overhaul of memberships, and some clubs are good at it- the Bulldogs being one. However you cannot have $30 + for tickets and expect flocks of fans to come...not when it is easy to sit at home, in the warm of your own home.

Finally, why can't the NRL have more promotions...a ticket gets you one free drink at the game....it would get more people to the game!

Just my thoughts, and for the record if I go to games this year it will be games at Suncorp or the SFS (where at least i am a member and I don't pay extortion)
