12000 exceeds my expectations for this Tigers team on a Monday night playing a team where their fans don't travel

Mount Smart Stadium's first 20,000-plus crowd of the season ... will there be another huge attendance for Saturday's festival of football? Photo: Photosport

Rugby league fans can feast on a four-game seven-and-a-half-hour festival of football at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday.

Starting at 11.00am on the stadium’s No 2 ground with the New South Wales Cup encounter between the Auckland Vulcans and Wentworthville, it culminates in the ninth-placed Vodafone Warriors taking on the sixth-placed Cronulla Sharks in their 21st-round NRL contest on the main ground (5.00pm kick-off; match day sponsor: ZM).

In between the first and last matches there are two games on the main arena, the first the NYC meeting between the Vodafone Junior Warriors and Cronulla (12.45pm kick-off) and the second the inaugural Warriors Cup grand final in the College Rugby League First XIII competition (2.45pm kick-off). The combatants for the CRL showdown will be found after Wednesday’s semi-finals when Kelston Boys’ High School hosts Otahuhu College and Mount Albert Grammar School is at home to St Paul’s College.

“It’s going to be a fantastic day for rugby league, a real festival of football,” said Vodafone Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah.

“Triple headers involving the Vodafone Warriors, the Vodafone Junior Warriors and the Vulcans have been a regular attraction so far this season but this is a first. Not only will we have the best players from the club spread through the three grades but we’ll also have the best of the future in the Warriors Cup grand final.

“Those who love their rugby league can make a real day of it, starting with the Vulcans on the No 2 ground at 11.00 and then moving next door to the main stadium to watch another three games.”

A second huge crowd in as many weeks is in prospect on Saturday following a turnout of 20,126 for the Vodafone Warriors’ impressive 30-22 win against the Melbourne Storm on Sunday, the biggest crowd of the season at Mount Smart Stadium so far this season.

Scurrah urged the public to secure tickets early as the Vodafone Warriors look to build on a run which has seen them win seven of their last eight matches to sit just outside the top eight.

If the Vodafone Warriors attract a second consecutive 20,000-plus crowd this Saturday, it will be the first time since early in the 2009 season that they’ve had two 20k crowds in the same year at Mount Smart Stadium (there was just one 20,000-plus home crowd in each of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 campaigns).

“The crowd was brilliant on Sunday and we’d love to see members and fans turn out in such big numbers again this week to support our teams,” said Scurrah.

To mark the occasion, match day sponsor ZM is taking over the North Stand and renaming it the ZM Student Fanstand for the day. ZM’s Ministry of Sound Radio Sessions DJ Mikael Wills will have the party pumping while the Vodafone Warriors battle the Sharks on the field.

A special deal has been struck just for students with tickets costing only $15.00. That’s half price (booking fees apply; capacity is limited in the North Stand).

There’ll be another large contingent of students at the ground on Saturday. As well as the two teams involved in the first Warriors Cup grand final, members from the other 16 CRL schools will be there (the competition is a joint venture between the Vodafone Warriors, the Auckland Rugby League and ASB College Sport).

After Wednesday’s semi-finals, the build-up to Sunday’s Warriors Cup decider will step up with a grand final breakfast on Thursday morning, which will be attended by Vodafone Warriors football staff and some NRL players.

The Warriors Cup grand final will be covered live on SKY Sport 2 along with the NYC and NRL matches.

So what was the total for round 20? I have it as 141,761, which would be the biggest round 20 total attendance on record, 25,520 up on last year.

To beat the season record, we would need another 663,580 over 48 games, at 17,991 per game.

The reason why crowds have been great is this is the first round not impacted by Origin.

What does that tell you ARLC?

No. We actually had some decent matchups it is the Rivalry round afterall. We have a few more good rounds to come yet. The draw had it's say more so then no one caring

I'm sure the Bulldogs v Souths game will be 40K+ providing a nice boost to figures.

Roosters v Souths Similar.

Given good weather and this game is at the Olympic stadium I would estimate a crowd much higher than 40,000 .

We are talking about a game with intense local rivalry and perhaps the minor premiership at stake!

This will be a big drawing game! 40,000 is at the low end of what should attend such a match.

There was an interview of David Smith about crowds yesterday in the Tele. Read the whole thing and still have no idea what they are trying to do to raise crowds, the bloke never answers a f**king question straight, absolute nuffy.

Read that online. Ritchie has no idea Centrebet GA includes 5/8 bays on the Eastern side so it's not the $25 for the grass as he said. Though why he would talk to those grubs is beyond me.

Yeah well i'm not sticking up for the Tele i'm just saying the CEO of our game is clueless.

Thats about the third or fourth interview of him i've read or listened to on the radio on various subjects and his answers are pretty much all the same no matter what.

After reading the interview did you feel at all confident that anything that would actually have good results was happening to lower ticket prices or raise crowds? Lol, give Greenburg this muppets job and piss him off.

From what I remember from that article, Bulldog asked the same question over and over. "Ticket prices are too high. What are you going to do about it?", "Families can't afford $100 a game. What are you going to do?", ... To which Smith said that finding the right price is important but the NRL doesn't set the prices.

Some questions were repetitive but i'd put that more down to the fact he wasn't getting any answers.

Why do an interview about crowds and ticket prices if the only answers you have are "Finding the right price is importatnt but we can't really do anything about it" We have been hearing that for years.

If he says "Finding the right price is important" tell us how or what the NRL is doing or can do to help lower prices, he has a lot more money then Gallop ever had to try and do something about it.

The issues in regards to going to the footy have been the same for years, high cost of tickets and food, families can't afford it.

David Gallop used to get it hammered for it now now Dave Smith has a billion dollars to play with and we are still getting the same bullshit answers basically:

"we don't set ticket prices we can't do anything"

Find us someone who can.

I never thought Gallop was any good but people are intent on giving Smith a pass for the same shit that used to lay into Gallop about.

Article in today's Telegraph saying 23,000 have been sold and they are expecting 50k+
