Yes it's free-to-air in Australia.

Great work by Rusty, as has been said, whether you like him or not - he's been great for the game. The only unfortunate thing is that it's buried on the soccer channel, but that is a minor letdown in otherwise great news.

Just about everyone has Pay TV in New Zealand, let alone sports fans.

I'd much rather fork out than have to feed off scraps like Aussie FTA fans do.

Ive never understood why Pay TV penetration isnt higher in Australia, after all your incomes are higher and if you average out the cost per week it's f**k all.

Leaguewise NZers are treating like Kings by Sky Sports, we have a feast of RL. Yet 9 and Fox shaft Aussie fans in the heartland of the game appallingly.

Why don't you keep your opinions to the Souths Troll thread, because you clearly have NFI.

Further, don't derail a serious thread with your inane garbage.

sweetheart, my post was in reply to steel dragon's one above it, asking was rusty doing it for the good of the game or was it done to benefit souffs...

btw.. inane dribble?

maybe have a read about halo marketing and see just how rusty promoting a the best example of quality rugby league would have a benefit for his team..

Any idea how much the NRL made from this deal or did the NRL simply give our most valuable product away for nothing?

Of course they gave it away for nothing. As they should. It's not worth anything to American broadcasters currently and it never will be unless the audience gets a chance to see it. We need to build an audience before we can cash in on it.

Actually, I'll go one step further and say we should be paying if necessary to get the game regularly on American television. The payoff from hooking even a small core audience is absolutely huge.

Can someone please explain to me is the NFL and Soccer channels sold separately? Therefore ppl who have the NFL channel would not necessarily have the soccer channel and vice versa.

Two totally different entities. The NFL Network is owned and operated by the NFL and shows nothing but NFL related programming. The Fox Soccer Channel is owned by News Corp and shows mainly domestic and European soccer but filled out with other sports (eg. Magner's League club Rugby) and programming from Sky Sports in the UK.

Both are included in many of the higher tier cable packages without needing to be explicitly paid for separately (I get both without asking for them or paying for any sort of "sport" package). They are unlikely to be included with basic cable but then over here that's like settling for FTA in Oz anyway.

Well done to Rusty and David Gallop. Between his out-of-the-box ideas and international connections with the United States, I really hope Rusty is never lost to rugby league.

Channel 9 on the other hand are an embarassment to themselves and rugby league.

great work by rusty except he got it on a channel that nobody activates on their cable and have to pay extra for to access. So all in all, i still can't watch it because activating channels like the soccer channel cost more and are useless channels. Wish he could do it on another channel, or at least have done this a bit earlier so that i could've paid a bit to watch it!

I can't agree with your thoughts on this one Legend, as has been pointed out, there is no value in selling these rights to the USA - it's better to have it on their TV sets for free than it is for us to demand a fee and they simply say "no thanks".

Australian TV rights is a much, much, much different story though obviously.

Russell Crowe is a massive asset to the game, and has done more for league in his spare time over the last 5 years than Gallop has done in his full time job for the last 10 years.

Most Americans cant figure out the difference between rugby union and rugby league. I expect them to just call it all rugby

Be awesome if he got it on a free to air channel like the Rugby Sevens did on NBC, they had millions watching that as it was just before their 6pm news broadcast

I admire the idea but if anymore then 4000 people watch it over there I'd be sincerely suprised. 40,000,000 he certainly has high hopes

I agree with you, as kickoff will be just after 3am on the West Coast & 6am on the East Coast, but to be fair, the quote was :

"It sees more than 40 million homes across the United States now able to experience live the passion and rivalry of the 2011 Harvey Norman State of Origin Series and the Telstra Premiership Grand Final."

ie - now able to experience, he didn't say viewers. The problem was that the media here created the headline of 40,000,000 viewers.

Just all the more reason why we need more people with media profiles involved in the game and actively promoting it.

Would have been better if Crowe did this for the recent 'ANZAC' Test...

Give the impression it's a International game and not just a Australian provincial game..
