speculation is running rife that the big brewer C.U.B. is about to jump into bed with RL at all levels in Australia.

Such positive news for the Greatest Game.

Just as important as money is the sponsor pushing our code through their product just like Bundy and Tooheys push Union. I hope they get behind the Kangaroos as well. Hell let's hope they sign up officially.

Major sponsorship deal. $4 million for 4 years involving the NRL, ARL, QRL, NSWRL, and CRL to be announced in weeks.

Would be nice if CUB's sponsorship can help organise Rugby League's structure and combine the bodies.
Perhaps emerging states could be included with the deal. Of course they're dollars need not be so great but anything would be appreciated.

Not so positive if they don't come to the good and sponsor the various country leagues who are sponsored by Tooheys at the moment. For example the Illawarra League used to be sponsored by Carlton up until 2002 when they dropped their sponsorship and Tooheys fortunately picked it up. However if Tooheys drop their sponsorship it could be trouble for Leagues such as the Illawarra competition as it will be void of a major sponsor, which brings much needed $$ into the league and into the juniors.

The deal will not affect the Lion Nathan sponsorships of League. It has been put together extremely well.

First off XXXX and Tooheys New have both confirmed their sponsorships of State of Origin for 2004 and beyond, as well XXXX has stated that it isn't going anywhere. There is a long association between XXXX and Rugby League and their is no plan to end it any time soon.

All the CRL leagues sponsored by Lion Nathan will again continue to be sponsored by the firm, the CUB deal is being tied into areas where there is no conflict. Like for the CRL it will be for their representative sides.

For the ARL it will be for the Kangaroos and World Sevens. For NSWRL it will be tied into Premier League I believe.

I would hope that they'd have the forsight to accommodate these arrangements.

From what I read somewhere today, CUB are fully aware of league's arrangements with Tooheys in some cases, and have no bones about it. They're sponsorship will not have any direct relationship with group league.

As for XXXX sponsoring QLD, this could be a boon for the game. The SMH reported the sponsorship as a beer war between the states. XXXX is owned by Lion Natham (who also owns Tooheys). By taking over from Tooheys in NSW, it pitts CUB vs Lion Natham in a State vs State battle.

CUB's main strategy is to increase their brand in country NSW. They used to do this through horse racing, but their presence in racing has shrunk. League is the perfect replacement, and it's kind of a payback for Toohey's who have made inroads into horse-racing in Victoria.

Looks like a win win situation for league
