Agreed, it doesn't take a genius to work out that they actually go away when there is no audience.

Reminds me of that episode in the Simpsons when advertising mascots came alive and went on rampage of destruction. Lisa convinced everyone to ignore them, and one-by-one the advertising went away. That is, all save one who couldn't resist but to look - Homer. The motto: there's always a Homer in every crowd.
