Daine Laurie

If this bloke isn't the most overhyped, over-rated player in the comp I'll give it away. I heard people say he's:
*The new Sonny Bill
*The new Tallis
*The new Mason (before he sucked)
*A bolter for origin

The truth is he's a 24 year old journeyman with hands like feet. He's quite aggressive but gives away dumb penalties, abit like Watmough on a bad day.
Honestly if he was a white guy with normal hair he'd be just another fringe 1st grader but because he looks different people think he's a cult hero and this great player.
A bloke like Zeb Taia has just as much of an impact as Daine Laurie, but without the brain explosions, knock ons, penalties and stays on the field twice as long yet never gets mentioned, yet Laurie is in papers nearly everyweek.

Which is exactly why I dislike him.

He's also given a free pass to do whatever he wants in the ruck because he's 'aggressive'. The funny thing is, those who believe his style of play is fantastic are also the same lot of people who criticised the Storm to no end for utilising the same tactics. I believe it's only a matter of time before Laurie is exposed and the rest of the NRL community wakes up to how overated he is.

Agree totally...when I first saw him he seemed to be a good player but the niggling, grubby style won't win any fans.

bah, he's a work in progress and two years from now you'll wish you had him.

The one thing he does that 99% of players don't do is generate a bit of excitement.

One bad game and you jump on him as quick as you can. My brother is a massive Tigers fan and he loves Daine Laurie, like you said he is a bit over-hyped but he is going to be a very good player. And Daine Laurie is 100X better then Zeb(drop the ball every set)Taia.

Forgive my ignorance but is he the dude who totally blew that try on the weekend?

If so.........even in my woeful career did I do anything nearly as bad.
Possibly the biggest fugup of the decade when it comes to blowing a certain try.

His performance today is unforgiveable. I just don't think we need a high-risk high-return player in our forwards. We already have that with Benji (which is fine because the payoff is huge). But you don't need that in your forwards.

In my opinion that was Daine Laurie's Paul Cariage moment.

Yeah it was

But that guy from the Sharks screwed one up pretty badly this season against the Dogs. I can't remember his name, he plays on the wing?

Trent Barrett (with the dragons) vs the Raiders....best bombed try you could hope to see....well that and Russell Richardson running 80m and dropping it when he went to put it down some 12 yrs back

I said this in another thread, but I like him.

Every team needs a player like him- at this best, he intimidates the opposition and puts them in two minds. At his worst, they give away excessive penalties. When you get a player like Lawrie playing at his best, more than his worst, you're onto a winner.

I hope the referees don't profile him out of the game

The difference is Simmons is one of the most maligned players in the comp and Laurie is supposedly a future superstar.
The bombed try aside, Laurie is a fringe 1st grader who we keep hearing has potential, the truth is if he didn't have cool hair he'd be viewed as a poor man's Anthony Watmough

yep bad but he did have to pick up a kick...so it was ( even though a sitter ) a bit easier to fug up.
Dave Simmons...he hasn't seen much 1st grade since.

Trents was a classic ...as was Russell Richardsons, he didn't even have to catch it he already had it in his hand.

I think Maybon or Mayvon? was probably the biggest of all time though.

The problem, through injuries and lack of quality big forwards at the tigers Sheens has been forced to throw him in at the deep end. The original plan Teflon Tim had for big Laurie was plenty of game time in reggies, limited bench time in 1st grade and a big off season getting super fit and than been unleashed next season as a wide running impact player off the bench. I agree the media has hyped him up, but if he was playing in a quality pack of forwardas who were being steered by a quality no7 things may be different. Anyway I will give him to mid season 2010 before I rate him either way

Laurie is a good player. He is aggressive and oppostion fear him. Not his fault officials are convinced we need to turn League into a game of netball. He dropped a ball, get over it. There are heaps of dropped ball every game, often inexcusible. His stuck out because he had line wide open.

i dont think any tigers fan says he will be a superstar. however behind a pack that actually goes forward i think he could be a very handy player.

he he not a forward? He should be one of the players helping to set a platform, not giving away penalties and dropping the ball.
Looks he's not a terrible player but he gets a free ride from the media because he's got cool hair
