KNIGHTS LAUNCH BID FOR PEZET

Melbourne are facing a multimillion-dollar fight for Jonah Pezet as they brace for the young half to make a call on his future next week amid a monster $2.5 million bid to lure him back to Newcastle involving the Knights’ biggest star.

Pezet and his agent Braith Anasta have been locked in talks for weeks with the Storm over a contract extension – he entered the final year of his existing deal on November 1.

The emerging playmaker is regarded as one of the game’s rising stars and despite having made only 10 appearances in the NRL, it is understood the Knights have weighed in with an offer reflective of his growing status in the game.

As part of their pitch, Sunday Sesh understands the Knights took Pezet out for an intimate dinner which was also attended by Newcastle captain and superstar Kalyn Ponga.

The Storm have also tabled a sizeable offer for Pezet as they look to ensure they secure their long-term successor to Jahrome Hughes.

Sunday Sesh understands that a crucial meeting next week with Melbourne is likely to have a decisive say over Pezet’s future as his camp seek assurances he will have the option to leave if Hughes signs a new deal.

Hughes is contracted until the end of 2026 and is likely to demand in excess of $1 million a season on his next deal, which will coincide with the addition of a new team in 2027.

Hughes is likely to be in hot demand.

Pezet is as well given the lack of quality halves on the market and his burgeoning reputation, which has only grown as he has recovered from a knee injury that prematurely ended last season.

The Knights loom as the most serious threat to Melbourne after tabling a deal which is believed to be worth in the vicinity of $2.5 million over four years.

A move to Newcastle would represent a homecoming of sorts for Pezet.

He was a member of Newcastle’s junior representative teams from 2018 until the end of the 2020 season, playing Harold Matthews and SG Ball for the club.

He then moved to the Melbourne Storm but rugby league was awash with rumours on Friday that Pezet was close to making a move back to the Knights, although it is understood the Storm remain well and truly in the mix as they prepare for crunch talks with the 21-year-old.

Oof the 2.5 million had me very concerned thinking its 3 years, but 4 years sounds much nicer. Still a lot for a largely unproven player but at this point its probably what you have to pay with the lack of good young halves in the game currently. You'd certainly rather a Pezet on ~625k/year for a few years than a Hastings for 750k+.

2.5 over 4 years is a great deal. It'd be very hard for him to turn down

The most pleasing aspect of this is that the Storm are fighting hard to keep him. Melbourne are pretty much the best club in the league at identifying talent and this tells me that we’re onto a good thing if they’re throwing resources at him.

Obviously this doesn’t guarantee success in any way but it’s good to know that Pezet is a guy that POS and the Storm both rate.

$2.5 over 4 years sounds good. Even if he stayed he probably would have been upgraded to around that price anyway by now. Probably better that he got work experience at the Storm for a while haha.

KPP testing the market should surprise no one as he only signed a two year deal. Does not mean he wants to leave. There has not been much talk around other clubs with him, and that is probably something Sully knew in advance. Same with Leo. They are there but not climbing over us to get them. Could just be a case of clubs doing things differently now and quieter, but it is quite funny watching these league journos scramble for any scrap of story they can find atm. It is probably because their beloved Roosters and Dogs are falling flat on their arse with recruits. Still waiting for this magical Roosters marquee. It will happen but they are not the sure thing they once were.

Tbh having watched all of Pezet’s FG games so far and a few junior games, I’m not really seeing the fuss there.

Saying that though if POS likes the look of him enough to make a high-ish offer for his experience level and Strom want to keep him then I’ll obviously trust their judgement.

I think it's less about who he is now and more about who he could develop into .

From all reports he is a massive student of the game and is very intelligent. Focuses on game management and not flashy plays and is also very mature for his age with a strong work ethic

Pahulu from the Titans is wanting out. Titans picked him for 19 games. At 20 games he gets a 50 grand bonus. He is not happy. Would be worth a look.

Apparently Thompson had a meeting with Ciraldo that went really well. It’s an indictment on the club if we lose him the exact same way we lost Young and Watson- next to impossible to build a team if we can’t even keep the quality players we already have.
