Name & No-Name Rushmen Key To Cowboys Survival

It will take the effort of all the teammates along the defensive line for the Cowboys season to get back on track.

The Cowboys have a multitude of problems this season. But the NFC East being what it is in 2013, they still stand a pretty good chance of winning it. They won't do that if their defense doesn't improve, and the easiest way for that to happen is to get improved play from the defensive line.
Improved play on defense isn't likely to come from the linebackers. Sean Lee and Justin Durant are out for close to a month and Bruce Carter along with Ernie Sims and whoever plays with him won't be an improvement. The secondary is getting some help back with J.J. Wilcox and possibly Morris Claiborne, so you could see their play get marginally better. They're also talking about playing more man-to-man which might help.

Still, the easiest way for the Cowboys defense to rapidly improve is for the front four to get back to pressuring the quarterback. That starts with the return of what we hope to be a healthy DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher.

Even with all the injuries the Cowboys have suffered along the defensive line, there was a point early in the year when the line was getting regular pressure. That has really fallen off lately. The Cowboys now have 24 sacks on the year which ties them for 21st in the league. Over their last three games they have four sacks, which isn't the kind of pressure they really need to be generating. The stats for sacks and pressures are markedly down in the last three games.

SacksHitsPressuresAvg.
Games 1-73.03.913.9Avg.
Games 8-101.34.08.7

George Selvie hasn't been nearly as active recently as he was early in the year, part of that has to do with DeMarcus Ware being absent. Also, Jason Hatcher needs to be fully healthy so he can collapse the middle, leading to a sack for him, or driving the QB into the arms of one of the ends.

Another thing that pressure from the defensive line does is help to create turnovers. Sacks can lead to fumbles from QBs and pressures can lead to poor decision by QBs.

The Cowboys defense is never going to be good this season, but if they can step it up just a notch in pressuring the QB, they will give the offense a little more room for error.

Jerry Jones: I’ve been doing some of my best work as Dallas Cowboys GM, could see holding position for next 15-20 years

Jerry Jones made it clear Friday that he plans on being the Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager for the foreseeable future.

What is his motivation? Well, the man with the 40-year-old brain says he’s been doing some of his best work.

“The facts are, I really do think that the way that things have rolled out, that I’m getting to do some of the best work that I’ve done, relatively speaking, in my career, these last several years,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM].

And he didn’t stop there. Jones, 71, then confirmed that he envisions running the Cowboys for the next 15-20 years.

“One of the reasons that I, to some degree, have taken the risks that I have over the years and kind of had the professional life that I followed is so that I get to decide when enough is enough, God willing,” Jones said. “So I do get to decide that. It’s a certain part of working for yourself if you still are standing when the time comes. So I get to really make that decision, and I want to make it in a way that I think is in the best interest of the team, franchise and really our fans.

“A lot of people just need to hear me say I know it’s in our best interest for us to operate the way we have. It’s unfortunate that over these last five or six years that we haven’t had a few things turn right for us at the end of the season, needing to win one of out of two games to get into the playoffs, having a healthy quarterback, all of those things. But we’ve been a lot closer than it seems.”

Yes, Jones delivered three Super Bowl titles during his first seven years as the team’s owner, however, since 1997, the Cowboys are 133-133. As if you needed a reminder.

Cowboys would have to OK Marinelli move

IRVING, Texas – With Lovie Smith set to become the next head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to reports, it is only natural to see Rod Marinelli linked to the former Chicago Bears head coach.

Marinelli spent four years on Smith’s staff with the Bears and was the coordinator from 2010-12. They coached together in Tampa Bay. He became the Dallas Cowboys defensive line coach in part because of his loyalty to Smith, who was fired.

There is nothing more important than loyalty to Marinelli.

But if he wants to return to Tampa Bay – he was a Buccanneers assistant from 1996-2005 – and reunite with Smith, then he would need the Cowboys’ OK, according to multiple sources.

Marinelli is under contract to the Cowboys in 2014. The Cowboys could let him go if they choose, but they have blocked Joe DeCamillis and Tony Sparano in recent years from taking jobs with different teams while under contract. It is possible they could come up with some sort of compensation package to let Marinelli go.

Teams are only required to allow assistant coaches to interview for head coaching vacancies.

But the feeling is the Cowboys do not want to lose Marinelli. He was forced to work with 19 different defensive linemen in 2013 because of injuries and poor play. The Cowboys higher ups liked what he brought to that group and defense in particular.

With Monte Kiffin’s status up in the air, Marinelli could be a candidate to be the Cowboys’ coordinator if they went that route.

But there is no questioning Marinelli’s feelings for Smith.

“I'll say this, he was one of my very best friends,” Marinelli said during the season. “I went there because of him, not for any other reason. We had a long tenure together and I believe in him. I've started this thing off about my beliefs, being old fashioned or whatever, I have a strong belief in what he believes in and I liked it. For me, it's got to be that or I struggle. I never want to not do it with all my heart. For me, that was Lovie's defense.”

Suck it DC, bridesmaid once more :D :p

As they say in the classics

Their is always next year.

Which reminds me, back in the early 70's the Cowboys were often referred as next years team.

The Cowboys time will come. Just hope its next year.
