Tony Romo done for the season

ESPN.com news services
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's return from a broken collarbone lasted less than two games.

While X-rays on Romo's injured left collarbone were inconclusive and the Cowboys have planned more tests for Friday, the quarterback is "done for the season," a source close to Romo told ESPN's Ed Werder.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14233206/tony-romo-dallas-cowboys-season-latest-collarbone-injury
A second injury of this nature and his age (36 come next season) has to open the chance of retirement.

Regardless of what decision Romo makes I expect the Cowboys to take a quarterback high in next years draft.

Jerry Jones: Cowboys need to find QB of future; Johnny Manziel could have been it

Tony Romo is under contract to play quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys through the 2019 season. But Jerry Jones and Co. certainly don't plan on waiting until then to find Romo's successor.

Jones acknowledged Tuesday morning that he's surprised that they haven't won any of their seven games without Romo under center. The Cowboys owner and general manager admitted that they were trying to build for the future with Brandon Weeden, "but that didn't work out for us."

"Consequently, I think we have made a D, if you want to give it that, make it an F, relative to how we have approached this situation if Romo should get hurt," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan's K&C Masterpiece show [KRLD-FM]. "We should be building for the future as well as have an operable quarterback behind our starter, Romo. And that's where we're going to try and get to."

But that doesn't necessarily mean spending a first-round pick.

"Well, I don't know about first round, necessarily, at all," Jones said.

"But it's certainly not that we, again, I go back to Weeden. Weeden was an opportunity to develop the future. ... There's a first-round pick. Half of the first-round picks that are made, don't work. That's not negative, they just don't work, so we have to keep that in mind.

"There's no doubt that we will be, as we move forward, continuing to try to get a situation where if Romo should get hurt, then we got a guy that can step in and carry us for some games, hopefully - that's a backup description I'm dealing with there - or at the same time, be developing for the future. That's what we're looking for."

Jones hasn't drafted a quarterback since Stephen McGee in 2009.

Before that, you have to go all the way back to Quincy Carter in 2001.

But when that was mentioned to Jones, he immediately recalled how close he came to selecting Johnny Manziel with the 16th overall pick in 2014.

Instead, the Cowboys decided to go with All-Pro right guard Zack Martin.

"Do you remember two years ago when we sat there right to the last second on the clock with Manziel? My whole point is, there you are," Jones said. "That was the whole purpose of doing that. At that particular time, for a first-round pick, I thought that Romo had more time. And if we sat there and worked with Manziel for four or five years, now we all know what's happened. We know the off-the-field issues. But on our board, one of our top five or six picks dropped down to us and it was at the quarterback position, and I absolutely was a vote of one in that room to basically go there. And I understood why.

"I understood the risk that was involved. And we got a great player instead. But those are the circumstances that come up when you're thinking for the future. I was at that particular time, debating the value of him for the future as well as debating a backup."

I will be for ever happy that we did not draft Manziel

Tony Romo not yet on IR as Cowboys leave door open for playoff return

IRVING, Texas -- While the Dallas Cowboys have said Tony Romo's season is over, they have yet to formally end it.

Why?

There is still hope, as faint as it may be.

"We're competitors," executive vice president Stephen Jones told ESPN.

Jones put the quarterback's recovery time from his recent left collarbone fracture at six to eight weeks, which could have him back for a possible wild-card game or a conference championship game.

A CT scan last Friday showed Romo suffered a hairline fracture in the healed portion of the distal fracture he suffered earlier in the season.

"It's seven or eight fractures versus one," Jones said, referring to the initial break in Week 2. "Is that a difference? Some say no and some say yes, to be honest with you. And I'm not a doctor."

The Cowboys don't necessarily need Romo's roster spot at the moment to add Kellen Moore to the active roster as Matt Cassel's backup for the stretch run. They released running back Trey Williams on Monday and rookie defensive end Ryan Russell has missed the last few weeks with an abdomen strain that could land him on injured reserve.

One of those spots is likely for rookie offensive tackle Chaz Green, who has spent the season on the physically unable to perform list.

The other would be for Moore.

Depending on how the Cowboys fare on Monday against the Washington Redskins could make the decision easier. A loss would not eliminate the Cowboys officially but would for all practical purposes keep them out of the postseason. A win would keep them in the race for at least another week.

Romo missed eight weeks (seven games) on the injured reserve/designated to return list after breaking his collarbone Sept. 20 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Upon his return, he noted the chance of re-breaking the collarbone was high, and it came to fruition in the third quarter of the Thanksgiving Day loss to the Carolina Panthers.

The risk of breaking the bone for a third time in a season would be at least as high if he were able to return.

At 3-8, the Cowboys are tied for the worst record in the NFC, but if they beat Washington and the New York Giants lose to the New York Jets, they would be only a game out of first place with four games to go.

The decision to delay what seems inevitable regarding Romo is not without precedent. In 2010, when Romo suffered a broken left collarbone in a Week 7 loss to the Giants, the Cowboys did not put him on injured reserve until Dec. 22 with two games to play and a 5-9 record.

Matt Cassell sucks. There's still time for a playoff run. Time to put in one of the greatest College QB's of all time and see what he can do.

Time for Kellen Moore!

If Moore starts for Dallas, I will be on their playoff bandwagon.

ESPN analyst: Cowboys offensive line one of top 10 position units in NFL

How good the Cowboys' offensive line really is has been a question of debate for this season.

During last year's 12-4 run they were regarded as the best offensive line in the NFL and one of the best position units. This year, they've received criticism as the Cowboys have stumbled to a 4-9 record.

But according to ESPN analyst Sam Monson, the Cowboys offensive line remains one of the best units in the league. Monson ranked it the No. 8 position unit in the NFL.

"This unit isn't what it was a year ago, but it's still pretty formidable," Monson wrote. "Tyron Smith is having the best season of his career and he, Zack Martin and Travis Frederick each have a spot inside the top three of their position ratings at PFF. Rookie La'el Collins has had more highlight blocks than any lineman in the league in his first season, but too many mental mistakes too, occasionally zoning the wrong way or just flat-out getting beat on the line.

"He figures to only improve, but Doug Free's performance at right tackle is a drop-off from a year ago. He has surrendered twice as much pressure (30 to 15) as Smith on the other side, and has not run blocked well."

Monson had the Cowboys offensive line one spot ahead of the Titans tight ends and one below the Patriots secondary.

Kellen Moore is the new Cowboys starting quarterback

Kellen Moore will start against Buffalo and Tony Romo's season will officially come to an end when the club places him on the injured reserve later this week.

Neither move comes as a surprise. Now that the Cowboys have been eliminated from the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six seasons, the landscape has changed.

Head coach Jason Garrett confirmed Monday morning on his weekly radio show on 105.3 The Fan that Moore will start against the Bills this weekend.

Moore took over for an ineffective Matt Cassel in the second quarter of Saturday's loss to the New York Jets, completing 15-of-25 passes for 158 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.

A source said the club will place Romo on the injured list in the next few days.

Jason Garrett, staff let Cowboys down when they were needed most
I spent 19 years as the NFL columnist for this newspaper, and there's one game that stands out above all others in the 400-plus games I attended during that stretch.

It was played in November 1997 between the Green Bay Packers and the Colts at Indianapolis. The Packers were the defending NFL champions on their way to another Super Bowl that season. The Colts were 0-10 and playing a backup quarterback that day.

But Paul Justin, filling in for an injured Jim Harbaugh, outplayed Brett Favre at quarterback, and the Colts prevailed 41-38 on a field goal at the gun. It was a coaching victory, a game-planning victory, by Lindy Infante and his staff. The Colts ran the ball, milked the clock and Justin played turnover-free football for the upset. I saw that day how coaching can make a difference and help a team win a game it has no business winning.

Coaching has not made a difference for the Cowboys this season.

As we sift through the wreckage of a 4-10 season -- the 15th time the Cowboys have failed to win the East since they last won a Super Bowl -- we are left to wonder how a team can collapse from 12-4 to this in the span of 12 months.

It's convenient to blame the injury absence of Tony Romo, an MVP candidate a year ago when he won his first NFL passing title. The Cowboys were 3-1 with him this season and are now 1-9 without him.

But there is a flaw in that logic.

The Cowboys were in position to win games without Romo.

Several games, in fact.

Let's start by eliminating the losses to New England, Carolina and Green Bay. All were lopsided defeats to division leaders. The Patriots and Panthers figure to be the top seeds come playoff time, and the Packers don't lose at home in December with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback (13-2). The Cowboys likely were going to lose those games with or without Romo.

That leaves seven other losses on the shoulders of backup quarterbacks. The Cowboys were ahead at halftime in five of those games and tied in another. In all seven of those defeats the Cowboys were either ahead or tied in the fourth quarter. But they couldn't close the deal. They didn't win any of them -- thus, 0-7.

Win four of those games and the Cowboys are 8-6 and sitting alone atop the division. Win three of them and the Cowboys are 7-7 and in control of their own playoff destiny. Win none of them and you have a fan base that is openly discussing the idea of tanking for the first overall draft pick next April.

The Cowboys led Atlanta 28-17 at the half and entered the fourth quarter of their September game with a 28-25 lead. But the Falcons scored two touchdowns in the final 15 minutes to put the game away, 39-28. How did an offense that scored 28 points in the first half disappear after the intermission?

The Cowboys led the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks 12-10 with 6:41 remaining. But the Seahawks mounted a 17-play, 79-yard, game-winning field-goal drive over the next six minutes. How did a defense that held Seattle to 244 yards in the opening 54 minutes wilt down the stretch?

The Cowboys led Tampa Bay 6-3 with four minutes remaining.

But the Buccaneers mounted a 10-play, 56-yard drive with a rookie quarterback for the game-winning touchdown in the final minute. How did a defense that held the Buccaneers to a single field goal over the opening 56 minutes dissolve when it mattered most?

The Cowboys lost two other games in overtime to New Orleans and Philadelphia, each time on a defensive bust that allowed a long, game-winning touchdown. C.J. Spiller overmatched the linebacker coverage of rookie Damien Wilson for an 80-yard touchdown reception in the New Orleans overtime, and Jordan Matthews capitalized on a slip by rookie cornerback Byron Jones for a 41-yard TD catch in the Philadelphia overtime.

The other two fourth-quarter losses came on a special-teams bust against the Giants and another blown coverage assignment by Jones against the Jets.

After tying the Giants 20-20 with seven minutes remaining, Dwayne Harris returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for the game-winning touchdown for New York. After tying the Jets 16-16 with 1:55 left, Jones let Kembrell Thompkins escape down the victors' sideline for a 43-yard pass reception to the Dallas 26.

That set up the game-winning field goal.

Players get paid to play games. Coaches get paid to win them. It's their job to put players in the best position to succeed. The proper play call, the proper substitution, the proper clock management, the strategic timeout -- it's the job of the coaching staff to find ways to win games. Regardless who the quarterback is.

Jason Garrett and his staff have let this franchise down. The Cowboys needed answers this season, needed solutions, and this coaching staff had none. Any coach can win when he's dealt a hand of aces. The rest must play the hand they are dealt -- and find a way to win with it. It's their job.

http://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dal...-cowboys-needed-jason-garrett-coaches-let?f=r

Would not surprise me if their is changes to the coaching line up at season end. The most obvious coaches in danger are Garrett, Linehan (OC), Marinelli (DC) and Pollack (Offensive Line coach).
