Cowboys promote rookie LG La'el Collins to starter, move Christine Michael into RB mix

Matt Cassel isn't the only player to be elevated into the starting lineup during the bye week.

Rookie La'el Collins will now start ahead of veteran Ron Leary at left guard and Christine Michael will get more opportunities at running back, although head coach Jason Garrett stopped short of declaring that Joseph Randle's starting job is in jeopardy.

Collins was inactive to open the season but worked his way into the rotation when Leary missed the second and third games with an injury. Collins started against Atlanta and graded out well, particularly in the run game.

Leary's performance has declined since his return to the starting lineup the past two games.

"We really just watched the tape,'' Garrett said. "We evaluated his tape vs. Ron's tape over the last couple of weeks and we just feel like he's deserving of this opportunity right now.

"We're going to give LC an opportunity at that spot this week and the chance to start against the Giants next week.''

Asked specifically if any other players would be promoted to the starting lineup during this bye week, Garrett said, "nothing like this.'' He then added that Michael would be given a greater role in the committee approach with Randle and Darren McFadden.

"At the running back position, C-Mike is a guy we signed a few weeks ago and we like him,'' Garrett said. "I think he's learning more and more about our system. We tried to give him an opportunity in the last couple of weeks and he made a good short yardage run for us, so we'll continue to try to get him in the mix along with Joe and with Darren.''

Doesn't surprise me that Collins has supplanted Leary at left guard. Leary has been a little disappointing this season.

The Cowboys have signed RB Rod Smith from Seattle. His signing gives the team four players at the position, Randle, McFadden, Michael and now Smith

Cowboys RB coach Gary Brown on Christine Michael: 'We're going to take the reins off and let him rock'

IRVING -- Jason Garrett revealed Wednesday that Christine Michael will be getting more opportunities to run the football going forward.

Since the Cowboys traded for Michael early last month, the former Texas A&M standout has been active for two games, carrying only twice for five yards.

Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown said Thursday that Michael, a second-round pick by Seattle in 2013, has earned the opportunity to have a bigger role.

"He can do more things," Brown said. "I think the thing is he had to learn it. He had to feel comfortable with it. I think he's where he needs to be. We're going to take the reins off and let him rock."

Joseph Randle has been the team's starter through the first five games, carrying 74 times for 289 yards and four touchdowns. Darren McFadden has been the team's No. 2, totaling 129 yards and one touchdown on 37 carries.

But the Cowboys have struggled to duplicate their 2014 success running the ball, averaging only 106.2 yards per game, which ranks 19th in the NFL.

"I think he's just a complement to those guys," Brown said of Michael.

"I think he brings a different style. He's more of a scat back, twitchy guy, with power, so I think he brings a little bit different style to the table and I think we need to take advantage of that."

Report: Dez Bryant doing on-field rehab, could return Week 7

Dez Bryant is seemingly getting close to making his return.

As Todd Archer of ESPN.com notes, Bryant took the practice field on Thursday wearing shoulder pads. While he was not expected to participate in practice with his teammates, Bryant was scheduled to go through some on-field rehab with an athletic trainer.

Archer reports that the Cowboys are hoping Bryant can make his return in Week 7 against the New York Giants, which is consistent with what we passed along a little over a week ago.

The initial timetable for Bryant’s recovery was 4-6 weeks. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport later reported that Bryant is expected to miss 10-12 weeks after undergoing a bone graft, while ESPN’s Ed Werder said the bone graft performed should help and result in a 6-8 week recovery period.

All signs point to Bryant returning much sooner than expected, and the Cowboys need him badly. With a quarterback situation that is looking as uncertain as ever and Tony Romo still weeks away from coming back, Dallas needs to find a way to keep its season alive. Bryant would provide a major boost in the passing game.

Giants game - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Good
Darren McFadden 152 yards (Cowboys first 100 yard rusher of the season)
Five receptions of at least 25 yards
The use of WR Lucky Whitehead in the running game where he ran for 35 yards on four carries. The four carries is the most by WR in franchise history.
Won the time in possession battle 38 mins to 22 mins
Offensive line had its best outing of the season. Allowing the team to rush for a season high 233 yards and allowing only one sack

Bad
Matt Cassel 3 interceptions
Lost the turnover battle 4-0
One touchdown receiving
Won the time in possession battle but still lost the game
Lost the penalty count

Ugly
Allowed fourth string RB Orleans Darkwa to cross for a touchdown and rush for 48 yards on just 8 carries.
Fumble by Cole Beasley that killed any hope Dallas had of a come back
Matt Cassel interception returned for a touchdown
100 yard kick return for a touchdown by Dwayne Harris

Sources: Cowboys RB Joseph Randle bolts Valley Ranch after demotion, is expected to return Thursday

IRVING -- Joseph Randle, upset with his demotion from the starting lineup, abruptly left the Cowboys' practice facility Wednesday afternoon but is expected to return Thursday to meet with the coaching staff, sources said.

Those same sources said the third-year running back has worked through his disappointment over being replaced by Darren McFadden and is ready to accept the decision and move forward.

Randle didn't practice Wednesday because of a strained oblique. He walked out of the locker room in shoulder pads while carrying his helmet 20 minutes into the practice session and began to work on the side with an athletic trainer.

Afterward, when Randle was scheduled for treatment, he couldn't be found. Club officials scrambled to determine where he had gone.

Multiple sources said Randle left Valley Ranch to meet with people he trusted to help him clear his head and talk through what happened.

Those same sources said Randle was dropped off at the team's practice facility late Wednesday afternoon, got into his car and left.
Randle started the Cowboys' first six games after taking over for DeMarco Murray, who left for Philadelphia in free agency. Randle left Sunday's game after only two carries in the first offensive series because of the oblique strain that has plagued him since training camp.

That opened the door for veteran McFadden, who rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. Head coach Jason Garrett announced Wednesday that McFadden will start against Seattle.
This is the second time in as many seasons that a Cowboys player has left Valley Ranch after a demotion. In September 2014, cornerback Morris Claiborne skipped a practice.

Claiborne was one of the team's starting cornerbacks the first three games last season before he learned on the morning of Sept. 23 that he was being replaced by Orlando Scandrick. Claiborne then stormed out of team headquarters, skipped a Tuesday walk-through session and team meetings before returning about eight hours later to meet with Garrett.

Claiborne was back practicing with the Cowboys the next day, but four plays into the following Week 4 game against New Orleans he suffered a season-ending ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee.
The Cowboys stuck by Claiborne after his angry reaction to a demotion, however, and the fourth-year cornerback regained his starting job this season and has played well.

Former Cowboys player Dennis Morgan has fatal heart attack in stands during Sunday's Cowboys-Giants game

Former Dallas Cowboys player Dennis Morgan died Sunday after an apparent heart attack suffered at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., while watching the Cowboys play the Giants, according to a report by NJ.com.

State police told the newspaper that Morgan, 63, went into cardiac arrest during the game and later died at Meadowlands Hospital.

Morgan, nicknamed "Strawberry," played in the NFL for two seasons -- 1974 and 1975, according to profootballreference.com -- as a kick returner for the Cowboys and then the Eagles. He retired after the 1975 season, the NJ.com article states.

He still holds the Cowboys record for longest kickoff return -- 98 yards, according to the team's media guide.

Morgan, who lived in White Plains, N.Y., at the time of his death, returned 19 punts for 287 yards and a touchdown and 35 kickoffs for 823 yards in 1974.

Dez Bryant: 'Just know I had a great practice'

IRVING, Texas -- Dez Bryant went through his second straight day of limited practice and was smiling broadly as he made a quick appearance inside the locker room.

“Just know I had a great practice,” Bryant said as he walked toward the training room.

Unlike Wednesday, Bryant took some 11-on-11 snaps, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. During the portion of practice open to the media, Bryant went through his usual routine and opened up one-on-one work with a touchdown catch in front of corner Tyler Patmon on a slant.

The Cowboys aren’t ready to announce he will play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. They have one more full practice Friday.

“He’s making some progress,” Linehan said. “I tell you guys this every week, I have no idea what the plan exactly is going to be for playing time, if, when, what. We’ve still got another practice to see how he responds. He got some work done today. Making progress. It’s great to have him out there. It brings a lot of energy and juice to the practice for sure.”

Bryant has missed the last five games recovering from surgery to repair a broken foot suffered in the season opener against the New York Giants.

The Cowboys have missed Bryant’s talent. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Cowboys' remaining receivers have been among the least productive since Bryant got hurt. They are 31st in targets, 31st in catches, 29th in yards and 29th in touchdown catches.

“He brings that leadership, he brings a presence,” Linehan said. “He brings a guy that defenses are obviously going to be keying in on, which in my mind helps other positions, helps other guys, helps the run game. The Dez Effect I think is going to be what it was for us when he was out there.”

Joseph Randle's absence means hit for Cowboys' run game

IRVING, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys had their best rushing game of the season last week against the New York Giants.

They finished with 233 yards on 41 carries with Darren McFadden leading the way with 152 yards. Even in last year’s epic rushing season in which DeMarco Murray set the team record with 1,845 yards, they didn’t have a day like last Sunday. It was the most the Cowboys have run for as a team since 2009.

And now comes news that Joseph Randle is facing discipline from the league for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Randle is not at Valley Ranch Thursday for treatment to tend to a personal issue, according to coach Jason Garrett, and he will not play Sunday because of an oblique strain suffered on his second carry against the Giants.

The Cowboys have promoted McFadden to the starting role, but they still have a need for Randle, who is their leading rusher with 315 yards on 76 carries. Christine Michael and Rod Smith are the other tailbacks on the roster.

Garrett is taking a next-man-up look at Randle’s absence and is not worried the Cowboys will be without their leading rusher.

“I don’t think it changes it that much, to be honest with you,” Garrett said. “Obviously Darren did an excellent job in the game against the Giants so he’s going to start the game for us. But C-Mike is a guy that we’ve tried to get some opportunities to the past few weeks. We feel good about Rodney as well. Each of those guys worked yesterday in practice and we anticipate those guys being up for the game."
In early September Michael and Smith were members of the Seahawks. The Cowboys acquired Michael in a trade on Sept. 6, but he did not play in the first three games. In the last three games he has seven carries for 23 yards. Smith was picked up off waivers from Seattle on Oct. 14 and was inactive last week.

The Cowboys lost Lance Dunbar for the season with a knee injury suffered against the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 4.

While the Cowboys are happy with McFadden’s performance, his injury history says he will not be able to carry the load the way Murray did last year. Only twice in his career has he had back-to-back games with at least 20 carries.

If the Cowboys lose Randle for more than injury over a period of time, the running game becomes fairly thin and inexperienced in the Dallas system.

The Cowboys have struggled in making the running game their identity this year. They found it against the Giants, even though they lost the game.

In everything they do, the Cowboys don’t have much margin for error. If they don’t have Randle, they have less margin for error.

Breaking Cowboys news:

Greg Hardy is the biggest piece of shit to ever grace the gridiron. Shame on Jerry jones for trying to polish that turd in front of us, shame on the NFL Owners for not agreeing to black ball this pond scum from the NFL. Shame on the Cowboys for enabling him by letting him tee off on coaches, players etc without reprimand, shame on the entire organisation for even trying to sell this piece of human garbage as a leader and respected member of the team, and finally shame on any Cowboys fan who cheers for this guy.

Disgusting human being that no organisation with a soul or moral compass would employ

You know... It was a real source of pride for me that when Hardy's agent started spreading rumours that the Raiders were negotiating with him... Mark Davis himself came out and squashed those rumours and set out that we don't sign those types of characters...

Then unfortunately we went and signed Aldon Smith....

So I can't really throw stones...

Result:
The Dolphins do not have a good defense, so hopefully Tony Romo’s return will turn the passing game around. RB McFadden is questionable for the game. If he cannot play then most likely recent signing Turbin will get the job.
