It's the most ridiculous system in the world. You are supposed to be voted by your peers as to who is the best player in the game, not by a bunch of wannabe Sensationalisers that are JOURNOS.

Which of these journos, knows more about Football than you do ???

The Game needs a proper set of judges making informed decisions. The way it is set out at the moment is a joke.

It lost all credibility with me when Anthony Mundine had a sensational year yet he only polled about 8 points. Why ???? because the journos and he never saw eye to eye. What a Fair system that is. Trent Barrett won it that year for memory, or the year after. Yet he was nowhere near the best at our own club let alone the competition.

To have 1 player singled out is beyond me, Each player should be judged in their posi as they are, and those are the winners.

To vote for the best. you have to have 2 categories.

Best Forward. Best Back.

The Point system also needs an overhaul.

Points should be allocated in such a manner where 5 players are voted on from each game.

5 Points to the best on the park
4
3
2
1

The judges should come from either the Coaches of the games.or a Few Ex well respected players who are voted into the position via the NRL or the players union.

Superb post St Jill. Just so easy to agree with logic like that.

What the f**k do journo's know anyway ? At least the Rothmans medal system was 10 times better, the refs attempted to show no bias, unlike journos and their agendas. Bring back the Rothmans imo.

Dragons and Chickens in agreement, cats and dogs living together, Armageddon is nigh!

Seriously though a good point.

Listening to Talkin' Sport yesterday, Hughes suggested a system where every player was given a rating for every match.

Drake, that is far too subjective.
The award as it is now has problems with people being given votes when they shouldn't be.

I can just imagine Andrew Johns being given 8 out of 10 for every game, same with Lockyer and Barrett, simply due to the superstar status. "Normal" players would receive 6 on average, even though they played as well as Johns et al.

Stick with only giving 3 (or 5) players points, or it gets to confusing and too open to "rorting" (even mroe so).

As I said in another thread, Laurie Daley and co have their favourites, and they ALWAYS poll well, even when they didn't deserve any points.

No disrespect to Danny Buderus, but they must change the system, because the award is becoming a joke.

The fact that it's only journalists from one side of the media handing out the ratings gives it less credibility as well.

If the awards were voted on by Fairfax & News Ltd it would attract more respect from the fans...

Not really Southern Saint.
I don't have much respect for either side of the "jounro war".

A system where players, officials, and the media vote would be ideal, although perhaps a little complex.

P.S.
Please tell me you aren't still pushing the ARL / Super League thing!!

I guess it is better than the old system.

The referees vote. 3,2,1

If a player is suspended then they're eliminated (oops, we had to change that part because Joey got suspended)

Then again would their be an issue if Brett Finch was awarded the medal by his dad?

Obviously not, seeing as two players from ex-ARL teams came first & second. But like exclusive radio rights, the games premier award being "owned" exclusively by one media organisation is stupid...

I didn't think you were, just checking !! ;-)

News Ltd are part owners of the NRL. As such they do (and deserve to) have a major say in what happens in the game.

Whether you agree or disagree, that's how business works.
Whether you agree or disagree with News Ltd having part ownership, well, that's a different matter entirely!

Either way, the Dally M Award needs to be revamped.

I agree with everything said here , however who does have any credibility to judge an award like this. I'd go so far as to say 99% of players who appear in the media now are either very dumb or just talk in clechaes and show no real knowledge of the game. So are they capable of judging it well? The whole rugby league media isn't very clever. When was the last time you read something technical about the game that was discussed in any kind of detail. It doesn't happen.

Ain't that the truth. If I hear another footballer say "um cliche arhg cliche um cliche um cliche arh thank channel nine and thank VB" I'll throw something at the bloody tele!

It should go back to the refs awarding the points. But we'll have to sack Robert Finch first

Chook.

Very true, when the points are based on the opinion of one person at each of the seven games in a weekend it lacks objectivity.

I think that's probably a good idea. Let former players, the ones in the know, hand the points out. The guys who've played the game and coached the game know it better than anyone else.

Eels Dude,

Laurie Daley qualifies as a former player, and yet he is one of the main offenders when it comes to awarding points to the wrong people!

Gary Freeman is another one.

The lack of objectivity could well come from a number of things. For example - will an ex player award points to a player who, while that player may have been best on ground, may have hit him in a head high tackle during his playing career or cut his grass at the club after the game the week before?

Does the person awarding the points have a particular gripe with the winning team, its coach or management?

Not to say this does happen, but it could well do.

The M's are also pretty unfair on the non-channel 9 teams: Minichello has the worst year in his career, yet still beats Hodgson for best fullback simply coz he plays for the Roosters - it's bullshit.
