I think he's as ordinary as anyone, nothing outstanding about him. He's a little bigger and stronger than some I suppose, thats really it after a deep dig for something. He was just randomly selected for origin that first time, really could have been absolutely anyone. He was playing for the broncos at the time with I think denan kemp on the other wing and there was nothing between them. Kemp a little more skillfull and quick and boyd a touch bigger and stronger. Both bottom of the barrel generic wingers that wouldn't necessarily stand out in a qld cup game. Then boyd got picked for origin, for no discernable reason, and maybe more significantly mal immediately made him feel like he owned the spot. This is when he went smug, but also started playing to his (limited) potential. If anyone plays to their full potential in the nrl they're gonna appear a decent player, but its just confidence, and mal could have given it to anyone but for some unknown reason gave it to boyd. Usually qld blesses gifted players with confidence, and its worked out very well and created legends and champions.
NSW picks on form, and instills no confidence because there's no job security. So they put inferior players on the field with no confidence and wonder why they lose, but I digress.
Boyd was an almost nsw-esque selection, if there was even form there, I didn't see it. But he since got qld confidence and played to his potential as a result, almost making it seem like a good choice, but it wasn't.
