He whinges too much and tends to come off as very arrogant IMO. I dont like seeing him as Aust captain, he is a pre madonna of the highest order.

lol... its prima donna and i disagree, he can really step up in future. As for the Johns V Lockyer debate, there is none. As an ambassador for League, Lockyer sh*ts all over Johns, the only people to see differently have red n blue glasses on.

If Joey was still captain he would have been in the papers spruiking for the cup every day and would have talked up every team and 3/4s of the players by now.

You get the feeling Locky forces himself to do this stuff, but Joey loved it.

There isn't anyone better at the moment, but i'd like to see a captain who is a bit of a media s**t next time - Cameron Smith loves the spotlight.

This thread is about Lockyer as a media performer.

Those who have decided he is a great guy so must be a great media performer are deluded.

He has the personality of a house plant, the public speaking ability of Jeff Fenech (without the passion) and zero desire to do the job.

You can make an argument about how good a player he is, but the reason you don't hear Lockyer on the radio every 5 minutes is because commentators are fully aware that they would get a better interview from Paris Hilton on Rugby League.

Johns is a very good media performer.
Lockyer is a very bad media performer.

All the insecure Lockyer lovers feel that must be attacked - but i think it very clearly shows people are displaying some serious self delusion if they can't accept the bleeding obvious.

johns was an absolutely terrible media performer while he was still playing... and for some time afterwards too. he's improved heaps since then, but he's never been comfortable in the media at all.

locky handles the media ok, but he's boring as batsh*t.

and ffs, johns has been retired 2 years and his name still pops up where ever lockyer does. many chips on many shoulders north of the border i feel.

roopy... come now... we have our champions for our own reasons... let everyone else have theirs too. joey was a lot of things to a lot of people, but i think saying that he's been a better ambassador for the game than lockyer is drawing a very long bow.

I used Joey as an example.
I could just have easily used Andrew Gaze, Grant Hackett, Mark Taylor or even John Eales or George Gregan if i wanted to go to the dark side.

As a mental health professional i have massive admiration for Johns and tend to forget the blind ignorance and prejudice against the mentally ill that his name provokes.

you are very wrong.

He has done everything short of releasing his medical records for public scrutiny to validate his claims of mental illness. You couldn't get one of the worlds top experts on bi-polar disorder to go on TV and lie about your condition. That would be the equivalent of getting the pope to speak up for abortion clinics.

When Lockyer speaks, people listen. He has strong credibility and this has not been taken away from because he decided not to become a media whore like some attention seekers.

As such, it is great to see him speaking positively about not just this WC, but the future of the tournament in general.

Johns clearly stated he took drugs on only a few occasions during the season and was an irregular user in the off season.
