I'll be 39 then.

i'll be 278

Its like children asking for chocolate.

"You have to wait"

"No, i Said. I can't be budged."

Has it ever occurred to you that contracts have been signed, relations with various groups are already in place and dont just change overnight, and there are time frames.

I doubt gallop prepared well for that radio gig, and live radio is probably something difficult to prepare for. He has not prepared for things well of late, if ever. A shame. But what can you tell people when the organisation you sit atop of is a bit of a sham. Its like a new-boys network, isnt it. a few guys from one company, a few from another, they have a couple of boards, one is a fake, the other is just a tow-the-line/no-room-to-move one. And gallop sits atop, with whispers in his ear.

Must be such a stressful job.

Let this be a lesson to RL: never give away your power.

And this message incorporates into my whole thing with clubs having stadia that are decent, with a hope of owning one some day, with them standing on their own two feet financially, and not relying on handouts.....its about being successful as much as it is about standing on your own two feet.

That way, when the clubs are protected largely from the bidding of outside influences, and the fans truly own the clubs and the game (with memberships) and the entire RL in this country is run by one body that has an independent commission, curruption can be stamped out probably nearly totally, and the game can move forward without the interference of outside (counter productive) influences.

If this can happen eventually, in my lifetime, or at least getting close to all of that, I will be so happy for the sport of rugby league.

BUt the hard decisions need to be made first

We need someone with 2 qualities: 1, independent of News, 2, a top notch businessman. A passion for the game and its continued growth in Sydney, Australia, and Internationally would be wonderful too

Although point #2 is good, point #1 is the most important. You eliminate the conflict of interest, you eliminate the other baggage that goes with it.

When Hughes decided to have one last go at the end regarding radio broadcast rights I thought..good!

But Gallop came out with the same old 'balancing act' routine and you knew it wasn't going anywhere. The tone in Graeme's voice following Gallop's answer was much the same. He knew he wasting his time and quickly put an end to the whole interview thing.

A fat old front rower with haemmhroids would do a better job at running the game. Sam Backo after a few schooners wuold negotiate a pretty fair TV right's deal.

I don't mind Gallop, compared to Moffat. The problem isn't Gallop, it's his employers.

Replace News Ltd with John Quayle. Problem solved.

No truer words have been posted Misty. If News were out, there would be no better person to run the game.
If we couldn't get JQ, Greg Mitchell from Parra would be a great choice. Mitchell worked as JQ's right hand man at the ARL and left when Quayle resigned. Even though Greg is his own man, he's been through the JQ era and would be an admirable choice.

I would have agreed right up until the last radio rights interview with Hughes, the fact he simply did not know what footprint was covered by the radio rights deal is not nearly good enough for the CEO of the NRL. The interview was an ambush, no doubt, but not knowing the answer to that question was just plain pathetic.

I though Gallop raised some very good points on why the AFL were able to get a better TV deal than the NRL:
* AFL have national coverage
* The AFL game goes for longer, to sponsors have more time to shove in their ads.

The other good thing was someone raised the point about how this weekends round becomes meaningless because you have the Storm and the Roosters all fielding kids due to all their stars being out for Origin. Gallop did conceed that they were trying something new this season by giving those clubs their bye after the origin so their players would not get burned out, but this is something they would assess at the end of the season.

But the thing that was lacking is that there does not appear to be any clear vision for the next 5-10 years. Are we looking at reducing the Sydney teams ? Are we going to put the pressure on someone to go to the Central Coast before soccer and AFL completely dominate it ? How are we going to fight the AFL push in West Sydney and the Gold Coast ? How are we going to raise attendences to the Sydney games ?
All seems to be a "we're looking into it" answer ( but I have not considered it yet )

BTW - I think News Ltd think the Gallop is doing a marvellous job

I think David Gallop is doing an admirable job as CEO. It is obvious he does not have a free reign due to the conflicts of interest that exist is NRL.

As long as he concentrates "growing the pie" everything should be sweet.

BTW why would so many people want to talk about golden point? It's great, end of story.

The AFL seek national coverage (despite woeful ratings in northern states)

The NRL do not actively seek national coverage.

They cannot use this as an excuse. It's their fault we don't have national coverage.

Totally agree with this, why do we get force fed their sport up here (even though it doesn't rate) and we don't try and do the same. Why does channel 7 back "their" sport to the hilt and channel 9 seem indifferent about it.

Unfortunately the issue is much deeper than Gallop. They have been showing AFL in Sydney on a Saturday afternoon way back in the early 80's. While here we are in 2008 and they can't show Sunday afternoon NRL in Melbourne. Just crazy.

True, Quayle was a great administrator for the game.

However, I think that if you yourself were 77 years of age, you'd want to be enjoying your retirement, rather than get caught up in the schmozzle which currently exists.

i didnt hear the interview, but wasnt gallop a former lawyer? as such you'd expect most of his answers to be pretty non-commital

i think the NRL needs new leadership, just better not be dennis fitzgerald...

exactly right. they need to start backing themselves instead of settling for the lesser option. the lack of confidence they show in our great game filters down and is a reason for all the negativity in the press at the moment. i wish they would show some vision and confidence in rugby league as a whole.
