I thinks Gallop is missing the whole point with the game. He wants to expand it into areas that don't want it such as Melb, Adelaide & Perth (which have previously failed) and take away teams from Sydney where the fans are. How interested in the game will you be if your team is relocated, merged or dropped altogether? Will you go to Homebush to watch a hybrid team when you used to travel only a short distance to your local ground. Give the game back to the people that support it, don't make it harder and more expensive for them.

Sharknows how can you say that Sydney people want it when you can only manage 8k in your newly redeveloped stadium, playing the table topping Titans and having a good run yourselves. I know it was raining, but Sydney fans and clubs have put the writing on the wall...there are too many teams in Sydney.

May as well get 8000 people to a game in Perth and grow it on the other side of the country than get the same old 8000 at cronulla.

I am not pointing all faults at the Sharks either its just a recent example.

Did you happen to see the weather on sunday. It was absolutely pissing down until shortly before the game. We generally get a pretty reasonable crowd down there but the weather and being the ch9 game would have had a big impact. Had the game been played in Perth in similar conditions all you would have seen would be seagulls.

And lets get realistic about this. The game will only ever have marginal following at best in those states. Their culture is AFL. Sydney's culture is league and everyone wants to take the game away from the cultural roots and give it to somewhere that doesn't want it.

Next time Gallop brings up the word "Balance", someone should advise him to get a new set of scales......cause the old ones are ******

Another good call Knight87.

Radio rights and the Melb Storm TV issue as well.

They certainly gave you more time than yesterday.

Basically, the points I said were (incase you missed it):

1) In reply to Gallop's response of TV coverage in Melbourne (which I didn't get time to elaborate on yesterday, due to the time constraints):

"Channel 9 want something on on Friday night that is going to rate and ahhh we're continuing to build interest in the game but we're not quite at a point where we can expect to be in prime time"

Gallop obviously hasn't looked and seen that the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions get games on live or near live in their respective markets, despite barely hitting 100,000 viewers each in their respective markets. I think you'll find that when League games have been shown at a decent time in Melbourne, they have rated better than Swans matches in Sydney and Lions matches in Brisbane

2) I have to disagree with Mark Geyer's post-interview comment, where he said that he felt very let down by the callers that called through. Yes, I acknowledge there were some callers who kept asking repetitive questions, such as with the Golden Point scenario, but most of the callers have nailed and more importantly, brought out into the open all the underlying issues in the game (in which MG backtracked and said that that was what he was 'trying' to refer to)

3) In reply to Trevor from Tamworth (the last caller on 2SM yesterday), I also agree that the exclusitivity of radio rights is one of the very first issues in NRL that needs to be amended. If you classified yourself as a Rugby League purist of fan, you wouldn't support the schmozzle that is the Continuous Call Team. Having listened to the Continuous Call Team, they put league to shame and after listening to them, I feel very embarrased to be a league supporter. With the whole vaudeville act which continuously occurs on that program, if you weren't a league follower, you'd think it was a group of people who didn't follow league at all or who were HIGH on PCP (to which Geyer chuckled, and said, "Welcome on Board, Nick!"). I know when I say this, people may think that I'm being fed messages by 2SM, but I'm letting all of you guys know (Graeme, Robbo and MG) that I'm saying all of this from my own free will.

2SM should bring on someone like Roy Masters to his thoughts on last night. I always enjoyed his segment on Ch7's Sportsworld every Sunday, back in the 90s.

I can't recall whether it was last year or the year before, Grant Goldman in the morning on 2sm, said the station won't be having Ray Hadley on thier radio network ever again calling rugby league.

So its 2 sm who have stopped most of the nsw listeners from receiving rugby league from refusing 2 gb to use thier network, a few years when people were getting the 2gb call that was through 2sm radio network.

So the decision by 2 sm to cut off ties with 2gb , is stopping people all over nsw getting the calls from 2 gb/ or any form of rugby league to the areas what the abc dont cover or when the abc is not covering the league.

I dont think 2sm should ever get the right to call for what they did, if it still stands that they dont like ray hadley or whoever,

well, I remember from as far back as 2005 (and I post by someone in another forum website, saying this) that after 2006, the exclusive radio rights thing would be scrapped and 2GB and 2SM would be the callers. Oh, how there was a major backflip on that, bigtime.

But Ray Hardly barely talks RL. His show is not rugby league, it's vaudeville crap. League fans are better off listening to the Clive Robertson show for RL content.

Fair point , all what they should do is just take the call of the game, when it finish go back to 2 sm, i admit i dont like hadley but if 2 sm is that concern about the coverage they should allow it like they did before.

I don't think hughes is a good league caller on the radio , i heard him calling the trail game between newcastle 2nds or somethign like that vs great britian last year , he still thinks he is calling on tv and commentates like it, very horrible call that was

My understanding of the events which unfolded and allowed the reneging of the original 'disintegration' of exclusive radio rights is as follows:

2GB had no intention of calling Monday Night Matches (the new timeslot that was created as a result of the new structure when the Gold Coast Titans were admitted into the comp for the 2007 season), but they knew that 2SM were dead keen to get their foot in the door in that new timeslot. So, instead of expanding coverage, further promoting the game and giving the fans and people who live in country areas (which is a large geographical area in both NSW/QLD) an alternative to the childish broadcast that is Triple M (which is a devout AFL station), the NRL simply bowed down to 2GB's request that no other commercial AM radio station was allowed to broadcast on Monday Night (this so called 'exclusitivity' allowed 2GB to block out other potential stations, which is completely the opposite from trying to promite the game. Can you see why the exclusitivity has to go? It's a complete abuse of power and doesn't do the game any favours). 2GB (being the exclusive right holders) also guaranteed that no other commercial station was allowed to call Saturday 7:30pm matches, despite also never having the intention themselves to broadcast in that timeslot.

So, basically, the NRL has virtually allowed 2GB to pay for the right to not only choosing to broadcast games when they want to, but to also not let other commericial stations to broadcast in timeslots they themselves were never interested covering, hence the reason for all the radio blackouts (the Friday Night game that doesn't go live into NSW on Ch9, both Saturday 7:30pm games and one of the two Sunday games).

Whereas, you look at the AFL in Melbourne, there's three broadcasters (3AW, Triple M and SEN) that cover all 8 games for the Melbournian ppl. Sydney, at very most, can only get 4 games on radio, and that is even less for the ppl living in country areas.

.

I have a feeling this suits the NRL's (News LTDs) agenda of less coverage elsewhere so people are forced to get their footy fix on Fox Sports.

Helps pay off the Superleague debt quicker.
