Bennett is on 1.5 million. Not even Demetriou gets that much.

I doubt the new commission will shell out that much for the new CEO. Maybe 750k but I doubt the new guy/girl cracks a mill.

Vlad has a base salary of $1.4 million but with bonuses earns much more.

With repect to expansion, the Gold Coast was given the nod when it has become evident that their business plan was not going to make them a good long term choice. There are now at least 6 bids working towards entry to the NRL and despite constant suggestions of when expansion happens, Gallop clearly has no idea when and if it will happen. This means there are fans, businesses and potential clubs spending money on an expansion bid for an expansion that may never happen. The AFL buggered up their expansion but at least they knew when and where it was happening. Perth and the CC have been ready to go for years.

The fact Gallop oversaw the years where rugby league began to claw back from the Super League affected years was nothing to ddo with his good work.

The business case for Gold Coast was exceptionally good, but like any business case it doesn't necessarily go to plan with poor management, and that's what the Titans had. On the face value of the business plans and cases Gold Coast were superior to the Bears.

Gallop held off on the idea of further expansion because of the development of the Independent Commission! There is no way he would commit to expanding the comp before a major management reorganisation.

As for the current situation, it is great for the game to have all these bids working towards entry and spending money. It shows how much they want to be in the game, and it ensures the NRL spends very little money to introduce the new club (unlike the rabbit hole that the AFL are finding themselves with the Gold Coast and GWS).

If you think thats dumb - then talk to FIFA about getting people to bid to host the world cup, or speak to the Olympic Committee about hosting the Olympics. All these bids spend lots of money and commit sponsors - it is good business.

You can claim the game would have made its way back, but the figures speak for themselves in the increase of revenue from merchandise and sponsors. There is no reason this should have increased by 35-40% in one year whether you like it or not. For someone who did shit all, Gallop has exceptional credibility in the Sports Management community in Australia.

Do I think he did a great job? No. I think he did a decent job. It is the right time for the game to get a new leader who is more about pushing the brand than protecting it.

Grant giving the presser:

-NRL has operated as a reactive business over the last 10 years, this was the right approach at the time, things need to change.
-Talks up TV rights
-Haven't picked CEO yet

John Grant agreed with my earlier post. :)

Good riddance to bad rubbish !

I can't believe anyone is defending his reactive approaches towards anything and everything that has happened in the NRL over the past 10 years.

He was a news limited puppet and nothing more ! The amount of people backflipping and commending him is sickening. He never, NOT EVEN ONCE took a pro-active approach to the game over the years. He had no cojones, constantly servicing his masters. Not once when channel 9 were being scum, did he even attempt to rectify the situation letting them walk all over rugby league.

The CEO is supposed to be a face of the game, but this guy just hid in the shadows when the NRL needed someone to stand and be counted.

Take Robert Lui for starters. The bloke should have been banned for life (or 10 years which is the same thing professionally) immediately when the guilty verdict was handed down. Instead Gallop mulled over it before giving him a 1 year ban. If the reports from the Cowboys are to be believe it makes it even worse.

9 weeks for Isaac Gordon after being found guilty of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend?

Even take the Brett Stewart incident. Brett was suspended for 4 weeks allegedly for being drunk (which is legal and not against any club or NRL policy) at a club function (and not misbehaving in the slightest). Yet Anthony Watmough was also drunk AND punched a club sponsor yet got no suspension.

Gallop couldn't even stay consistent with events from the same evening in the same location, it's not surprising that he couldn't stay consistent with events days, weeks, months or even years apart.

Spot on. Add to that channel 9's terrible coverage. Says they need to show before mid night when they don't. He does bugger all.

It might be News behind the scences who knows. Atleast now the new person we know is 100% in charge

Great news
\\\\:D/

I've stood up for him in the past in the hope he vindicated himself if given a chance under the new commission. But that will never happen now.

His legacy is a stable comp, but at the cost of poor TV deals, poorly handled scandals, et cetera.

John Grant - "it was a reactive business"

Nail on the head.
SO true.

Gallop: "The game has a unique ability to attack itself, and that passion needs to be harnessed in the right way".

Met Gallop once. He seemed like a good fellow. Cant play Golf for shite though.

Thought he did a reasonable job. Erred on expansion too long, needed a clear agenda there.

I believe a Ceo should dictate terms aswell. At least be clear about it, throw forward a plan cast in stone then work towards it.

Basically what im saying is that under his tenure the game slowly rebuilt but lacked a definite direction, and needed " Simply the best " as its anthem.

cheers
