It's like clockwork.

No matter how much hatred a person receives during their years, the second they leave causes everyone to do a backflip and praise them in retrospect.

He did not do very much for the game at all. The fact that he defended the McIntyre system is enough to know where his head is.

Has been a good servant of the game but seems to be one step behind things more recently. Thanks Dave.

Change might be what the games needs.

Had to deal with arguably the biggest rort in Australian sporting history. Whatever decision he made he was going to be criticised. Add on the constant and highly targeted inane dribblings of Phil Gould and the grudge of the Sea-Eagles
He did a solid job. I find all the releasing of tension in this thread to be hilariously sad.

Hehehe, now I can't stop thinking of the Chasers' eulogy song!

Surely we can do better than that, Bennett would be on more than that.

Bennett is on 1.5 million. Not even Demetriou gets that much.

I doubt the new commission will shell out that much for the new CEO. Maybe 750k but I doubt the new guy/girl cracks a mill.

I think Neil Whittaker did all the hard work for Gallop. Gallop had a walk in the park compared to the massive job Whittaker had to undertake.

Whittaker did more in his short time than Gallop did in 10 years.

Fact.

He oversaw the deaths of Wests, Balmain, Norths, Illawarra, St George (partial), Souths, Manly (at the time), Perth, Adelaide and Gold Coast...

Yeah he did alot....

Plenty of people have said he did a good job but I'm waiting for someone to say what he actually did well. He performed poorly in almost every aspect and "he had to deal with a lot" just doesn't cut it. Every CEO in a high profile position has to deal with a lot. Manly and Melbourne fans giving him a hard time and having to deal with the salary cap rort are hardly things to put on the "pro" list. The "con" list is overflowing.

I didn't realise that it was that much actually, I was actually just think of Kearney being on around 400k and threw Bennett's name out there.

What exactly did he do well? He buggered up expansion, he took no control over the rule changes that have become more and more vague, he has allowed the judiciary to become a lottery, he has mishandled problems with player behaviour. He has done absolutely nothing that could be considered proactive at all. He defended the macintyre system to the hilt for years and then as soon as the ARLC ditched it, he came out saying he was a supporter of the new (ARL) system.

I think he did expansion well, and this is one area the AFL have been weak in.

Mishandled player behaviour? He has usually taken appropriate action with the off field drama in most circumstances.

He was very strong in his decision in the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal (and the Bulldogs, and the Warriors, etc.).

He was a stabilising force, which I think he did well at doing. He oversaw breaking of crowd records in 2003, 2004, 2005. In 2004 to 2005 there was 39% increase in sponsorship, 41% increase in merchandise royalties, and a 12% increase in participation at the junior levels.

He oversaw the NRL become a highly rated sporting business, whether you like it or not.

Goodbye and good riddance you News Limited stoodge, everytime i hear hear he did a fantastic job i have to laugh. He handed over the TV rights for chump change that didn't even go to tender last time. The main reason RL has been living off the smell of an oily rag for years, he did a great job for his masters at News he did f**k all for the game of RL.

The next CEO has to be independent. He can't be working for a club now.

Agreed.

Quale's time has come and gone.

I like the work Greenberg does with the Bulldogs. I wouldn't be against Greenberg as CEO of the NRL, but I also think that the replacement needs to have no current club affiliations.

Would hiring a Pommie be out of the question? Richard Lewis?
