ST George Illawarra hooker Dean Young has signed a new 3 year deal with the club. The move follows prop Ben Creagh signing for four more years last week. Young 25 made his debut for the Dragons in 2003. He played his junior rugby league with the Dapto Canaries.

Oh no... 3 more years? No offence meant to a great clubman - but he delivers very little as a DH, and is nowhere near as effective as the other backrowers currently available.

IMO - a bad decision: 2 years too many. We'll be paying reasonable money to a guy playing NSW Cup this time next year.

He's not a hooker and playing there is having an adverse effect on him. He's a gun back rower & you can never have too many of those.

f**k sake some of you people have tunnel vision. He's probably on an average wage & is a farkin great, loyal clubman, someting everyone seems to demand, but only if you're a superstar apparently.

Wayne Bennett has no idea. I wouldn't wipe my ass with either of his best-selling books or any of his premiership cups

agree with you Godz.. far too many people on here complain about decisions being made on recruitment, yet are happy to accept the fact that we are equal 1st on the ladder...

wayne bennett knows his stuff & knows which cattle he needs to take out another trophy..

if i had spare time i'd love to trawl back thru the board looking at all the people bagging out our recruitment at the back end of last year - eg the decision to sign weyman, costigan & priddis... yet somehow these are the guys (particularly ram-man) who are driving our performance this year.

The big big difference between the two is that Weyman has improved out of sight while Young has gone backwards. There is still nepotism at the Dragons.

Good signing and wouldn't have been too expensive at all. I think his worth to the team is very underrated. In saying that I'm not convinced he is the long term option at 9 though, would still like us to buy a bench hooker or promote Fepuleai.

That recruitment strategy for Cronulla has worked brilliantly this year.

To be honest, if he is not at hooker, he is surplus to our requirements in the backrow department. Prior, Creagh, Smith, Costigan and then adding Scott when he eventually moves back into the forwards in perhaps next season. We have alot of depth in the backrow, and I highly doubt young is just on an "average" wage, he won't be on a large wage, but I imagine he'd be approaching the mid 200k mark...

With Poore potentially leaving we need to focus our recruitment on the front row, hooker and a natural halfback, not the 2nd row.

yeah i agree - he is not going to be a number 9 long term...he's not in the best form at the moment, but i hope he turns it around soon - he plays with the same heart as Lance Thompson.

Young Extends Contract Until End of 2012
Dragons Hooker and local junior Dean Young has today agreed to terms with the Club for a further three years, until the end of 2012.

The Dapto Canaries junior progressed through the junior ranks and rugby league
development pathways to make his NRL debut in round two of season 2003 against the Eels at WIN Stadium, Wollongong and has to date played 129 games and scored 14 tries for the Club.

“I went and saw Wayne and just let him know that I wanted to stay at the Club and I love the Dragons,” Young said. “It just started there and my Manager and the Club did the rest.

“All of my family and friends are here and I definitely don’t want to move away so it is great that we were able to agree to terms,” he added. “It is great having Wayne here and with a great bunch of blokes here as well it made my decision easy.”

After a horrid run with injuries that saw Young miss the Finals Series in 2006 and make only three appearances in season 2007, Young believes he is now the fittest he has ever been and is happy with the way he is playing.

“I’m enjoying my footy at the moment, I’m staying on the park longer, playing more minutes which is great,” Young commented. “I think hooker is where my future is and spending some time in the back row at times so I’m happy with that.”

Coach Wayne Bennett believes Young’s leadership qualities and the skills he brings to the
team will be a big part of the Dragons moving forward.

“The signing of Dean was important to us as he is quite a leader amongst the group and
offers a lot of things both on and off the field,” Bennett said. “His family has a long history at the Club and he is developing his own. Being here for the next three years gives him the chance to add to that”.

Dragons CEO Peter Doust was pleased the Club and Young had been able to agree to terms.

“Dean is a great Club man, a quality individual who contributes enormously to our Club both on and off the field,” said Doust. “His mature influence along with his dedication and
commitment make him an important and positive leader.

His re-signing is great news for everyone associated with the Dragons”.

Needs to be in the backrow. Can see him as a great ball playing backrower but as a hooker he is average in attack and his passes can be quite off at times

Im really happy with this signing. I think dean can develope as a great hooker. Lets not forget what benny did with berigan. He started off as a 5/8 of half back and went to the centres and finished with a premiership as a hooker.

Congrats dean.

P.S. cant believe people bagging him out.
