I have always been fascinated at what makes some players do what they do on a footy field. So with that i have compiled my team of the dirtiest-nastiest players from those i have seen since following league around 20 years ago as an impressionable 9year old.

I'm sure theres loads more.........

1. Matthew Ridge-former Manly CAT!
2. John Davidson-former Tiger who was purely out there to fight.
3. Mick Podgie-together with Davidson a spiteful duo.
4. Michael Beattie- Angst is his middle name.
5. John Hopoate- ...........................(write whatever u want here)
6. Steve Linnane- Eye gouger who was definately on 'something' everytime he played.
7. Tommy Raudonikas- Have only seen tapes of him, but man was he a dirty bastard on the footy field.
8. Peter kelly- 'hitem hi,hitem lo, knockem out b4 u go!"
9. Mark Bugden- ex Bulldog and copper....enough said.
10. Bob Cooper- cheap shot Bob who like Tommy i have only seen on tapes but from wot i saw he never picked on anyone his own size.
11. Mark Geyer- complete thug who had no regard for authority.
12. Les Boyd- tough bastard but equally as dirty.
13. Chris Mortimer- Never saw him make a tackle without some sort of niggling foul play.

Mathew Ridge??? If being super competitive makes you a cat? Then how does that make him a dirty player???

Gary Freeman was the cheap shot specialist.

In the 1988 semi final against Canberra alone he got away with 4 seperate swinging arm high shots on the Raiders forwards - often as the 2nd man into the tackle. I'm not exaggerating when I say each shot would see an immediate send off in today's game.

With the saturation of tv coverage the players today are so much cleaner than in the past. And if you're watching Fox - it should come as no surprise that Freeman loves the niggle in games and always questions the worthiness of penalties - he was a grade A cheap shot merchant and got away with it.

I'm surprised Morley ain't on that list with his collection of swinging arms. Also Corey Hughes, he ain't a real thug or nothing but he is a cheat, always plays for the penalty, if given a choice between scoring a try and drawing a penalty he'll take the latter.

Bob Cooper and Les Boyd should be 1 and 2. John Dallas Donnelly would be right up there at 3 too. haha loved the magpie thugs, they were in a class of their own :)

Thats why i loved watching Wests vs Easts or Wests vs Manly games ... great stuff.

Freeman had his two front teeth taken from him off a cheap shot by a Brisbane front rower years ago...i think it was Greg Dowling..from memmory Freeman had just been tackled and was on his back...the other bloke just dropped his knees clean on his mouth.

but i remember the nice take out of the black pearl...by a little canterbury player named lamb - that was a bit rude.
