Maintaining whatever special sauce they've got going on there will be their biggest test.

They are a talent factory now but they need to ensure they keep the magic in the dressing room.

We lost some of that spark with Bennett and Reynolds leaving at the same time.

If Luai is key to that and is playing well enough, you keep him. Even if it means sacrificing more talented players.
There has been a distinct lack of smug from the Panthers in 2025, even when scoring tries etc. Wondering how right I was with the above thought last year..

I love reading these threads in hindsight

The smug was very dismissive of Luai, despite them having a nearly 20% better winning record with him and no Nathan then vise versa. I even remember a Smug fan telling me last year that Schnider was actually a better player then him.

I told Brandy on SEN before a ball was kicked this year that by end of 2025 they'll realise they released the wrong half, naturally he was very smug in his response and said the Tigers had overpaid. Daresay if they had their time again they may have put a few more cherries on top of their offer to Jarome 'he can't be the main man' Luai.

Schneider is a scrum half not a stand off. Not sure why they think he’s the answer. He needs to come back to HKR and panthers can have May back :)

you can’t lose all the quality players Penrith have and not see an impact. Cap working some might say.

Not the best start for Penrith but they’ve been without Edwards for the past few games. They’ve also lost a few other key players this year (along with a few every year for the past 3). It was going to catch up with them eventually. You could make a 17 of panthers who have left the club since 2020 that could push for top 4.

It's called a salary cap boys.

We had 3 of the best players in the world in our spine. You can't maintain that without compromising the rest of your team. Luai was off contract and chased coin. Good luck to him.

So you’re saying we should’ve kept Luai over Cleary? That will go down as the worst comment ever.

There is a lot not going right at Penrith at the moment and Luai leaving them is one of them. They certainly look flat; has happened over the last three years early in the season but this year is worse than the others. Given Luai’s personality and well reported influence on the energy of the place, there is surely an argument that it is a big influence.

And I love Jarome and wish him the best at Wests, but to suggest we should have kept him over Nathan is laughable, particularly when they are receiving largely the same wage.

I wonder how much (potentially deliberate) irony there will be in ‘I love reading these threads in hindsight’ comment over the coming months; let’s face it as we sit today West Tigers have a grand total of one additional win than the Panthers…

Attack isn’t the issue, you’re leaking 28 points a game.

Even when Penrith played crap over the previous half decade, the defence still stood solid.

Something stinks at the foot of the mountain.

Lots of things aren’t right, and losing Jarome is one of them.

But we have lost players before and come good. Keep the faith brother; that sphincter-clenching fear you generally feel about the Black Wave will have returned by the end of the season.

There is a little bit of smug from me in this, mainly because when we signed Luai 90% of panthers fans told us we were idiots,he’d be a miserable failure and they’d be business as usual. The media also continually ran ‘Luai under the most pressure in the game’ during the pre season, yet didn’t once mention if Nathan may be under pressure without Jarome.

its an extremely small sample size but so far it ain’t great viewing for Penrith. Of course come the end of the year there’s every chance Penrith are well entrenched in the 8 and were deciding between Bali or Fiji

As for should they have kept Nathan or Jarome, well that’s still to be decided but with Ivan there was never going to be question that needed asking. Maybe it should have been Jarome or Dylan?

starting 13 of players who have left Penrith in the past 5 seasons. Name a club that doesn’t immediately start at least 5 of those players. Probably missed about half a dozen other players.

A few of us had concerns going into Round 1 about the lack of trial games and pre season in some cases.

We then came back from Vegas and had another week off. Meanwhile the rest of the comp didn't stuff their pre-season and continued to ramp up while we rested

Sadly those of us with that mindset are proving correct. We sit with -20 point differential so aren't totally hopeless but started behind the 8 ball

The side once they get into their groove are capable of putting a run of wins together, when that starts will determine how the season plays out

if you keep Galvin and have to pay up. What sides win the comp with 1/6th of the cap on 2 players?

That was the issue with getting Luai, The price paid was for an elite half but you end up needing to partner him with more expense to cover his flaws

My point in resurrecting this was more about how you can lose talent but you need to hold on to that special sauce.

We lost once in a generation players in Sam Burgess and Greg Inglis, a club legend in John Sutton, and a bunch of other talent, and didn't skip a beat (admittedly we were never at Penrith's level, but we kept up as final 4 side).

Then we let Reynolds go and the club fell apart.

Luai might not be as good as others still at the club, or others they let go, but he may have been the most important.

Or the Panthers scrape into the finals and win the comp from 8th. Who knows.
