Israel Folau joining Japanese rugby union side after Queensland Rugby League knockback​

Israel Folau's latest football venture will take him to Japan to play rugby union, after a drawn-out process to try to get him approved to return to rugby league in Queensland.

Folau has been revealed as a new signing for NTT Communications Shining Arcs for the 2021-22 season of Japan's Top League.

The Shining Arcs are led by former Waratahs coach Rob Penney, who spent time with Folau during his Super Rugby days.

Folau, whose decorated Wallabies career ended after a homophobic social media post, made an apparent attempt to return to lower-grade rugby league in Queensland earlier this year.

The 32-year-old's bid to return with the Southport Tigers was backed by mining magnate Clive Palmer, but the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) would not register the controversial star.

The QRL had requested that he secure a release from his previous Super League club in France, Catalans Dragons, before he could play.

Folau said he had told the club he was not returning to France after flying home, but the Dragons said he was still contracted until November 2022.

Lawyers representing the former Wallaby had threatened to take the QRL to court for discriminating against Folau, before the Shining Arcs listed him among their new signings for 2021-22.

Folau's new team finished fourth in their conference in the 2021 season, losing in the first round of the playoffs.

Fellow former Wallabies star Liam Gill is also on the Shining Arcs' roster.

I've posted here many times supporting Folaus right to have his beliefs and still be allowed to play professionally but this move is undefendable.
This bloke has zero morals, I'm starting to think his original post was intentional to get sacked and a payout ( a few of the rugby writers have hinted at this ) He's played Catalans for fools and everyone that's stupid enough to support him.

My last post about this got deleted but hopefully this one will stay. Anthony Mundine said he paid the Bulldogs on behalf on Sonny Bill. I still think the Williams case is worse, negotiating behind his team while under contract and leaving in the middle of the night.

ANTHONY Mundine, the man who bankrolled rugby league's version of The Great Escape, insists he has been "paid back in full" by Sonny Bill Williams.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph yesterday, Mundine said he had received "every cent" of the $750,000 he outlayed for close mate Williams to walk out on the Canterbury Bulldogs four years ago.
The outspoken boxer refused, however, to be drawn on Williams' manager Khoder Nasser - with whom the fighter recently split.
While the falling out was serious enough for Mundine's father, champion boxer and trainer Tony, to recently stand down from Team SBW, the middleweight said he wished both men only success.
"Sonny is his own man and I'm there for him regardless," Mundine said. "What's happened between Khoder and I, that's between us.
"Khoder Nasser is the best in the business at what he does. I have nothing bad to say. I wish the same for both Sonny and Khoder as I do myself - the best."
Debate raged yesterday over the NRL's plan to use Williams in its advertising campaign.
