To get the 'bred' tag I reckon at a minimum they should play at least a season in the lower grades for your club (or feeder club) before their first grade debut. Anything less and of course they are going to be a 'nobody' when you buy them, but another club will have still done all the nuturing.

Not to cause a fuss but Hazem's junior club is actually in the Balmain District, so he could be counted as a Balmain junior.

Can someone please get that spanner out of the works?

When will the homos who wrote this article realise that the players they claim we took from other clubs where DUDS when we bought them (all except for Ryan and O'Meley) and we've turned them into something good. Players like Tonga, Patten and Armit where nobodies at their former clubs and we've turned them into much better players.

They talk about Mason, SBW, Asotasi and Anasta coming from different parts, ffs they where 14 and 15 when we got them. We did breed them pretty much.

So for a club to have a "bred" player they have to have been born and they have to grow up in that area?

Whoever wrote this article should shoot themselves in the c**k.

This just makes the shirt even more rubbish. Most of our team have been brought through to FG by us. 10/17 in fact. A few more have been long term Roosters and will probably finish out their career with us. And our recent buys, I don't expect them to leave any time soon.

between the Bulldogs side named this week, 276 collective first grade appearances have been made for another club (this includes 99 for Sullivan with heaps of them playing in Warrington). For the Roosters the total of games played for other teams is 598, double that of the Bulldogs.

That to me says it all.

for me buying 'talent' would be buying a player who has spent several years at a club, eg: Cronulla buying Blake Green from Eels. Or like when the eels purchased Tahu etc.

Breeding the talent would be like SBW, Hindy etc. Sure they did not get born or live local but came through all the grades to progress into the NRL.
Or simply a local junior...

Tonga wasn't a nobody, he just wasn't an international centre. Why would he stick around when he had Lyon (best centre of the day), and Vaeleki (who was going through an MC Hammer period) in front of him.

Nobody could forsee Vaeleki losing his form so dramatically or Lyon doing the dog. If they could have, he would have stayed, it's that simple. He went where he'd be guaranteed a spot in firsts. He was always a prodigious talent in the juniours and was always expected to make the step up to higher honours.

From memory, the Dragons thought fairly highly of Patten as well IIRC, a Saints supporter might be able to clarify that further. But from memory, every time I saw him play in the red V, he was always highly regarded by the club.

There is a difference between a player not getting a chance because they are in a waiting list and a player being a nobody.

Noone would debate Sullivan tbh... he's a new recruit and was bought mid career but he'd be about 'it' in terms of players purchased mid-career.

Tonga was struggling to press for first grade at Parramatta, his best form was in his first couple of years in the Blue & White. Andrew Ryan's earned his name at the 'Dogs and never reached fantastic heights at Parra - he was like Tonga - struggling to push for FG.

Holdsworth played FG for Saints... what, 5 or 6 games? Please.

Before Ryan went to the dogs he represented NSW at lock, even thou he was a bench player at parramatta.

Tonga always showed potential at parramatta, and was very good in his few games he played. But when you have a 20, and 21 year old international centres (who were both nominated for centre of the year) what do you do, twiddle you tumbs.
Tonga and Ryan are both parramatta products, cant argue that IMO.

Just to compare parramatta have 11 players in this weeks team who are parramatta jnrs (Burt, Reddy, Tautai, Hayne, Grothe, Smith, Cayless, Cordoba, Hindy, Mateo, Hauraki, Keating).

Myles was a gun at the Dogs and established himself in Origin. His best form was as the Dogs. He is yet to re-capture that.

 WHAT?

I support neither team, but Myles so far this year has never played better.

Newcastle could lay claim to Burt as a junior as well couldn't they. From memory, didn't he play under 17s for them?

What a load of sh*t.

Danny Buderus signed with the Knights in his mid teens from Taree ( certainly close enough to Newcastle to call him a local ) and played his entire lower grades from Mattews/SG Ball with the Knights and local comp with Western Suburbs Newcastle. How can anyone say he isn't a local product?

Jarrod Mullen - St Francis Xavier ( Newcastle ) high school student since 16 , and Western Suburbs Newcastle junior ( same as Gidley ) since he was 12 alongside Luke Walsh after growing up in the Upper Hunter.

That's two glaring errors, and it brings into question just how accurate the rest of the article is when they can overlook two OBVIOUS locals.

Grail said it himself - he never truly established a position and was forced to play all around the park before finally moving on to the Bulldogs... he fell out of favour with NSW selectors in 2002 before truly hitting his straps and cementing a consistent first grade spot in our back row in 2003-4, re-earning himself a Blue jersey in 2004.

Yes...and that had nothing to do with the 15 odd game losing streak Parra went on in mid 2002, of course

Bobcat played 73 games for Parramatta, at an average of 24 games a season over three seasons. You'd have to be an idiot to say he wasn't an established first grader.

Burt played with Dudley and is a Newcastle junior.

As is Greg Bird ( Maitland ) / Newcastle SG BALL - FLEGG

Brett Kimmorley ( Lakes United )

John Morris ( Scone )

Brett Finch ( Valentine )

Willie Mason ( Toronto )

Anthony Tupou ( West Newcastle Rosellas )

Josh Perry ( Valentine )

Riley Brown ( Singleton )

Thats just a few off the top of my head.

Burt - Newcastle Junior
Reddy - Sth Aust
Hindmarsh - Robertson
Hauraki - NZ
Smith - Runaway Bay.

They may have played in the lower grade system but it doesn't make them a local junior.
