MACDOUGALL AGREES TO TERMS

2009-02-02

The Newcastle Knights are proud to announce veteran centre, Adam MacDougall has agreed to terms to wear the blue and red again in 2009.

MacDougall will resume training with his Newcastle team mates tomorrow morning after accepting a two year deal late this evening.

“It’s a fantastic outcome for the club,” said CEO, Steve Burraston.

“I thought Adam had one of his better years in 2008 so to have such a quality player agreeing to terms with the Newcastle Knights is a great conclusion.”

A former Kangaroo tourist and State of Origin player, MacDougall’s career highlights also include Newcastle’s unforgettable 1997 Grand Final triumph over Manly.

Preparations for the Knights 2009 NRL campaign will continue tomorrow morning at the Newcastle University sporting fields with MacDougall’s familiar face back in the line up.

Stay tuned to the Knights official website tomorrow for more news on MacDougall’s decision to continue his illustrious NRL career with Newcastle.

With Naiqama's injury taking longer than expected, it's not surprising that negotiations went a bit more quickly. 1 year would have been plenty

Wow. Not even Brian Smith can manage to get a two-year contract out of the Knights board.

he has played bugger all games and wont play full seasons - 2 years is fine IMO.

It will be mostly incentive anyway.

I'd say the two years was put in to get him to agree to the original one year deal, and a promise of a bit of make-up the following year, and if he can't play the second year (injury, form etc) there would be a bit of money there to make up this years shortfall. I doubt he'll play the second year, just a way of overcoming the cap problem this year.

Has there ever been a player get more money from one club for doing less.

I reckon by the end of two years McManus will have played more firstgrade than Doogs over a career for a third of the money.

We have a fairly young side so it's good to have a few experienced head in the ranks. Him along with Simmo

WTF! They have lost their collective minds over there at Knights HQ. Pato must be thinking the same thing. Every year they make ridiculous decisions like this one. Infuriating. This will be the next BK episode. :x

Huge call by the knights I reackon... 2 years is a bit much but should be on peanuts so hope we get a good 20 games out of him for the 2 years and I'll be satisfied.

He can fill in when Aku and Mcmanus play Origin this year ^^

I'm glad Macdougall has re-signed for the Knights. Why? Because he is only 9 tries away from equalling Timana Tahu's club record for most tries for the Newcastle Knights (and needs 10 to break it).

Barring injury, he should get there. According to David Middleton's yearbook, the curent leading tryscorers tally is:

82 Timana Tahu
80 Andrew Johns
78 Robbie O'Davis
73 Adam MacDougall
68 Matt Gidley
66 Mark Hughes
65 Darren Albert
58 Danny Buderus

Actually 58 tries for Danny Buderus is not bad by a hooker... the most for a Knights forward.

MacDougall's tally does not include any he scored for Souths (and I don't think he scored any in his only season at the Roosters).

Gee's he'll be close to 36 when the contract expires. Another Darren Smith. Pretty good considering he was going to consider and early retirement at age 25!
