Penalties are often awarded against the first incident of foul play when players react like Barret did, I believe it is at the referees discretion wether he penalises the first offender or the retaliator.

omfg some people are hard to get through to

- Marsh is putting a hit on, not a charge down. Therefore his arms are in a fine position, leading with forearms (not elbows) to make contact with the body is fine.... This isnt netball here... they're tough men.

- first contact IS not with the head...surely there can be no arguement on this.

- disputible evidence whether contact was made with the head at all... yet this is irrelevant, as first contact was made neck down.

- taxidriver et al, are you all trying to justify barret hitting someone from behind just because a hit (MAYBE) defelected up with minimal contact with the chin?

This evidence means absolutely nothing. Yes ill admit that is the only legal technique for preforming a charge down in rugby - RUGBY UNION THAT IS. This example is obviosly taken from a rugby union guide (as the orginal author mentions in his post). In rugby union it is totally illegal to tackle the player after he puts through a kick, and to put in a shoulder charge after a kick would be a yellow or depending on the ref a red card offence. However in RUGBY LEAGUE it is fine to put in a shoulder charge on the kicker as long as it’s not late or initial impact is high, which in this case both were fine
