Downer NRL Auckland 9's

Sorry, his attack was sideways. And his preferred option is to kick the ball rather than pass it.
Also he is now supposed to be a specialist winger; and he doesn't know where the sideline is?
Oh dear. Tell me again it's just fun. Nothing serious.
The Warriors treated the 9's with disrespect. If Auckland loses it next year we all know who to blame.

Of course it was sideways. Because no one created any space for him. He was on the edge. If there's nothing doing, what do you want him to do, run over the sideline??? He then cut back and inevitably caught someone coming out of the line to create space for others.

If you're talking about the kick in field, yes, let's ignore the previous 17 minutes of errors and blame it on a guy making a break, who had no support, who then had to try to make something out of nothing. My god mate, what the hell were you hoping for?? Seems very harsh to me.

In terms of losing the nines, I think that was inevitable. It has a product cycle and the crowds year on year have decreased. If you're suggesting one club was responsible for it being successful, that in itself suggests it can't be anything other than a short term rotation. Wellington with the sevens has proven this. The model is novelty based, and needs constant reinventing to be sustainable.

What Tui was doing was something, even if it was sidetracking, it was more than what our other "playmakers" were doing. Apart from Ayshford and Tui there was no-one else that was really looking threatening. I can easily back that up with you-tube footage and we can analyse whos doing what.

Our two danger looking men were Ayshford and Tui fullstop.

Hoff probably qualifies as our earner. Did we have 12 of the 25 there?

  • Ryan Hoffman (top 5 earner?)
  • Junior Pauga*
  • Matt Allwood top 25
  • Blake Ayshford top 25
  • Ata Hingano
  • Solomone Kata scratched
  • Shaun Johnson scratched
  • Ruben Wiki (c)*
  • Mason Lino* top 25?
  • Bunty Afoa* top 25
  • James Gavet top 25
  • Tuimoala Lolohea top 25
  • Jazz Tevaga* top 25
  • Ofahiki Ogden*
  • Lewis Soosemea*
  • Toafofoa Sipley* top 25
  • Isaiah Papalii*

I like that you always have an opinion and I respect it.

But why do the 9s deserve respect? It's a cash cow for the NRL in an already too long season when they already have a mid-year cash cow that produces more than enough milk to last. It's got no history. It's not even league, it's 9s. I wouldn't know who won last year, the year before and I love the NRL with an immense passion.

I completely understand and respect the right of coaches like Hasler, this year Kearney etc to treat the 9s with contempt. I don't care if the NRL says they have to have a certain amount of top 5 and top 25 players - of course the NRL who's tournament this is would say that. History doesn't judge coaches nor does it mean a pile of anything at the negotiation table for a new contract/job in regards to 9s results. The tournament is a sideshow. So it's of almost zero assistance to the season proper. I say well done to Kearney for the approach he took. If we're 4-1 or better to start the season, as he plans to be, will anyone remember? He'll be judged solely on NRL performances, and how we go on Waitangi Weekend will make no impression on that. McFadden probably chased the title last year because he knew it'd be his best hope at glory.

If Auckland loses it, it won't be because the Warriors didn't win either. It was always going to be shared around, it's not ours by right. As the concept wanes, it goes to a new market.

Bye bye 9s, won't miss you. Just the way I see it.

Good post.
My thoughts are purely selfish. After training the offseason I was always busting to play preseason games; to test myself out against opposition. I thought the 9's would be an ideal chance for that. We remember how Cappy played a third string side against the Titans last year, wasting a trial, and then get creamed in Nelson against the Dragons. Too late then to make changes to the playing styles of the squad - and look what happened..
Also I am sure the Warriors won't be refusing their share of the profits from the 9's. Bit dishonest if you make no effort. And no, I won't be crying to see it go elsewhere. But my grizzle isn't with the tournament; it is with our showing. All the old faults are still there, can't catch the ball, poor passes, no structure, poor tackling.
As for a masterstroke by Kearney - I will wait and see.

i reckon they would of had 2 maybe 3 trainging sessions for the 9s. so of course no structure. I saw no lines run or set moves. i saw no experience either cos none were picked

its the bigger picture im focused on

I was impressed with the Eels. .
Yep Matagi had a good nines, hope he goes great for them this year.

Scott from the Melbourne Storm I thought looked promising, although a quiet day 2.

My all star nines team...
1. Gideon Gela - Mosby (wing/sweep)
2. Latrell Mitchell (left centre)
3. Nathan Cleary (left 5/8)
4. Suaia Matagi (left prop)
5. Cameron Cullen (hooker)
6. Jason Taumalolo (right prop)
7. Connor Watson (right 5/8)
8. Cameron Munster (right centre)
9. Josh Addo - Carr (wing/sweep)

The worst team: was a tie between the Souths Rabbitohs and the Warrior.

But isn't that expected when your coach openly says he's not that interested in the tournament? Can we expect players to be committed, energetic when they know the coach gives no level of shit and doesn't view it as a selection tool, and just wants them to get through uninjured? And I doubt they spent many training sessions at all on combinations etc. That tournament went how I expected it to and I'm not fussed. Hopefully they'll be more on the ball next weekend. And SK deals with trials better than McFudd.
