All quiet on the western front boardlumps . It would appear that they are holding their cards close to their chest and their Crown Lagers even closer . :beers:

If we can believe the media reports then it is down to either Griffin or Furner . Apparently the ‘gong boys want Furner whereas the Saints part of this happy amalgamation would like the more experienced Griffin .

But you never know with our mob , they could quite accidentally decide upon a first class mentor for the Dragons Perhaps Uncle Bruce will open his crocodile skin wallet and spend some real money on a coach who shall drag the Dragons from the Mary - made - rubble into respectability .

But don’t count on it mate .

i don’t see how Furner is even in the conversation. He hasn’t coach first grade in Australia since 2013 when got sacked from his beloved Canberra.

He got fired last year last year one year into a three contract with Leeds Rhinos after going 5 & 10

His overall winning percentage is only 42%.

Am I missing something? Surely it has to Griffin.

Yes would be buzzy

Dragons' youth hope Young gets his chance
  • r0_0_800_600_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

The Dragons' playing group are hoping Dean Young is given the chance to lead the club next season.
St George Illawarra players say they want Dean Young to be given an extended shot in charge as talks continue over the NRL club's next coach.

The Dragons ramped up their search for Paul McGregor's full-time replacement late on Thursday afternoon, with Anthony Griffin the first man interviewed.

Both Young and Newcastle assistant David Furner were expected to follow, with both having coached their own clubs earlier during the day.

All interviews are being conducted via Zoom, given both Young and Furner remain inside their team's bubbles and unable to sit down with management at Kogarah.

At this stage there is no timeline on an announcement, however there is a feeling the sooner the process is complete it will help the Dragons recruitment process.

Players meanwhile remain behind Young, who took over from McGregor a fortnight ago.

He has a close link with the group as an assistant, and also coached several players - including Adam Clune and Matt Dufty - in the lower grades.

"I have a really good relationship with Youngy," halfback Clune said.

"All the boys have a really good relationship with him. It would be good to see him get a genuine opportunity.

"He has six weeks at the back end of last year and probably doesn't get to do all the things he'd like to and all the things he wants."

Even if he is not selected as coach, there remains every chance Young will be asked to remain at the club as an assistant.

"It's obviously been the lingering question over the club since Mary left. All the boys who have contracts for next year need a bit of clarity," fullback Matt Dufty said.

"Dean has done a really good job, I have had him as a coach since under-20s and he has come in with a real purpose to improve the boys.

"All the boys would be really happy for him to get the job."

Griffin has emerged as the early front runner, with a 55.5 per cent win record during his stints at Brisbane and Canberra.

Defensively he is what the Dragons are looking for.

No team of his has ever conceded more than 500 points in a season, a metric each premier from the past 14 years has fallen under.

However there have been questions over his game plan in attack, with the most common knock on him being a lack of expansive play.

Meanwhile Furner coached Canberra in 121 matches between 2009 and 2013, for a win rate of 43.8 per cent.

He spent just 14 games in charge of the Leeds Rhinos last year in the English Super League, before exiting after a 4-10 start to the season.

I know they've worked with Dean as a coach before, but it's disappointing that these two would publicly support him like they have.

It is in both of their best interests to be playing under a coach who can develop them more as players and they know better than anyone he isn't up for it.

Maybe they're scared of someone coming in and holding players accountable for sub par performances/attitudes

No need to sell me on that , I totally agree as would the majority of forum members . It just a damn shame that the powers to be cannot think outside of the square and have far more worthy candidates available for consideration .

But I have a horrible feeling that whomever is the ‘ chosen one ‘ selected to guide the Dragons to premiership glory , will only be warming the seat for Mr. Dean Young .

Had the same thought myself , if only the Joint Venture could open their eyes and truly look towards the future. The man would be ideal for the Dragons - unlimited experience, absolute dedication to the game and winning . He would also bring much needed respectability and with the added bonus of attracting big name players to the club - J.V.

Informative article, the players don’t need to get too upset hopefully Deano will stay on as assistant under Griffin

Agree, it is disappointing; these stories are so boring; player interviews are about as interesting as watching paint dry! Their entitled to their opinion, but I feel that they should have better responses than this and the club should encourage them to take a more neutral position during the recruitment process.
Bennett controlled this really well during his tenure with the Dragons.

A coach from outside would probably come out and punt clune immediately. Deserves a bit longer but he has been underperforming for mine. So of course he's going to come out in support of a coach that probably is a good mate.

Our players shouldn't have a say. Tired of their talentless performances.

yeah, blame it on poor Cluny :joy:

huge value for money, and will come into his own I reckon. Definitely deserves his spot, though I’d like to see more of Sailor too...

Yes I know , however Shaun Wane was available , although he went after the Cowboys job the man had apparently made overtures to the Dragons about the coaching role .

But there are alternatives to the this . If the board would think with an open mind .

C.Ref Smith . I am not the only person whom has had the same thought , but and it’s a bluudy BIG BUT , the chowder heads would need to look towards the future .

Something that is almost alien to those board members who still cling on to memories of the golden era .
