St George Illawarra Dragons still in hunt for a new coach in 2014 after missing out on Craig Bellamy

ST George Illawarra are on the lookout for a new coach for 2014 after missing out on signing supercoach Craig Bellamy yesterday.

In what could almost be considered a vote of no-confidence in current coach Steve Price, Dragons chief executive Peter Doust last night confirmed Saints were still considering their options for next year's coach.

"Steve was informed of what we were doing when all this started," Doust said. "I understand it can be hard for him. We've known each other for a long time. I will say it's a credit to both him and the players how they've handled the off-season. This sort of thing is just part of the landscape in rugby league these days. You've got to look ahead."

Doust had been trying to convince Bellamy to join St George Illawarra since they first spoke last October. He got the phone call from Bellamy on Sunday evening, revealing he would be staying at Storm. "We did our best he's made the decision," Doust said. "We've now got to make a decision on a coach and our players for 2014. There is no timeline on it. We'll continue to do our due diligence and evaluate all our options. That doesn't necessarily mean our current coach won't be here next year."

Doust refused to say if he was already talking to other coaches. Price continues to handle the situation with class. "The club has been honest and transparent all along," he said last night. "Craig Bellamy is one of the greatest coaches in history. I can understand why they were talking to him. For me, it's business as usual, head down, bum up and try to get a good start to the season."

Veterans Tim Sheens and Brian Smith are available as is Price's assistant coach at the Dragons, Steve Folkes. Panthers general manager Phil Gould might also be considered in a coaching director's role. Or there is always the possibility of Nathan Brown returning. Otherwise it would be the untried coaches who were in line for the Wests Tigers job such as Kevin Walters and Matt Parish. Laurie Daley once worked at the Dragons as a coaching consultant and could be an outside chance if the Blues win the Origin series. Bellamy yesterday revealed it was his emotional attachment to the Melbourne Storm that caused the long delay in finally settling his future.

The offer from St George Illawarra was almost identical in financial terms, but in the end, he couldn't bring himself to walking out on the Storm after a decade in Melbourne. "I feel like a bit of a fan I suppose," he said. "This is my club. "I found that attachment just too hard to break to be quite honest." Obviously the relationship with superstars Cameron Smith, Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk played a big role in the decision too. Smith and Cronk had Bellamy clauses in their contracts and could have left if the coach had gone to the Dragons. "The emotional attachment is very strong, particularly with the players," Bellamy said. "They're really important to me, not only as coach but as a person. I love the club and I love the people in the organisation."

In recent weeks, some suggested the challenge of lifting St George Illawarra out of the doldrums would appeal to the superstar coach. Even while he was in camp with the Indigenous All Stars last week, the players got the impression he was he was still a 50/50 chance of leaving. "I know a lot of people would have thought it would have been a bigger challenge for me to go," Bellamy said. "As a head coach at any elite club it's a challenge every day you go to work. There are still plenty of challenges and a lot we want to achieve as a group here at the Storm."

i would have thought needing this settled before the 2014 season constitutes a timeline?

on a side note i get very nervous when i see Sheens, Brown or Smith mentioned when talking future coaches...

No to Sheens, Smith and Folkes -myths and/or yesterdays men. Gus Gould - highly doubt he wants to coach again.
Daley was given the shove when Bennett arrived, and his generously proportioned nose is probably still out of joint over it all. Has less coaching credentials than Price. Same with Walters and Parish.
Browny - well, he won his 1st ESL match with St Helens on the weekend, and received little or no fanfare. I still think he's our best option, with Deano and Hornby as assistants.

Dude, he lost the season opener 4-40. Please, not him or Mary McGregor (who I really fear).

I feel sorry for Price now. Seriously. With the squad he's stuck with, The Supercoach could go 3 and 6 out of the first nine games. I think if he manages to get us 5 and 4 he'll deserve a 12 month extension and the right to try and get the best of who's still available on the transfer market, throwing the cheque book at the best centre and half. In fact I'd give him an extra 12 months if he gets us to 4 and 5. That's a dreadful looking draw that starts with what could turn into a pretty demoralising horrorshow in round 1 in Melbourne.

If he goes 3 and 6 or worse.....I'm throwing my hands up. What are the options? At that point, could Sheens be any worse?

I'm praying the drug scandal re-orients the landscape a bit.

I want first and foremost for Price to succeed however there seems a real vote of no confidence in him by the club, we will have to see. I've said it before but Jim Dymock is one guy I would seriously consider ahead of Sheens, Smith or even Brown.

Daniel Anderson for me, he's got the experience and tastes success in the UK super league. Great communicator and the right age to promote respect from the players. A bonus would be his relationship within the nrl and referees ranks.

I personally can't see any of these coaches being able to draw any big name players to our club any better than Price could. Maybe I'm wrong.

There's an article intoday's mercury which is reporting Price will be given 6 weeks to improve.

Stick with price, give him money to spend, he did better than sheens, bennett, smith, parish, daley, gould and brown in the NRL last season did he not?

unfairly treated is an understatement.

Apologies for my abscence chaps, I've been down in Toorak praying for Bellamy to head North, alas to no avail.
I wouldn't mind seeing Phil Economides head back into the cauldron of coaching with Len Stacker and Paul Langmack as assistant coaches.

I also wish to congratulate whoever had the sign at Wollongong one Sunny Sunday Arvo about 3 years ago that said "God hates paedophiles and the Cronulla Sharks"
It was only up for about 5 minutes, not sure what happened to it, but hats off to you my shark loathing amigo

Price’s fortunes have improved thanks to the geniuses who allude to being the game’s cognoscente.

Expectations are very low for the team, with pundits picking us to battle for the spoon.

Three from six and maintenance of the ability to make the eight will, IMO, keep Doust from jumping to anyone but a highly credentialed alternative.

Personally I reckon that we’ll rue losing the opportunity to employ Mick Potter who will need to be a genius to lift the Tigers but that may well be the case.

Price has a roster with potential to go deep into the finals but that potential will need to be realised. Success in early rounds, if it comes, will bring about Origin selection for squad members and that will add to his ability to draw name players. This is a real and genuine concern for the club and Price knows it.

The ball’s in his court. He has a racquet. Will he hit a winner or maintain a prolonged rally?

Not many sleeps to go ‘til we find out?

Best thing for Price is with Doust's comments yesterday, he's far from safe.

This'll force him to take risks.

Hopefully these risks pay off.

Who. Dares. Wins.

Bellamy got pumped 40-0 in a GF, and we were throwing multi millions at him.

I was just analyzing the telecrap options and rate him as the best credentialed long term fit for us amongst those mentioned in that article.

DTD, I do think there's a degree of difference between getting smashed 0-40 in a GF without Cameron Smith and getting smashed 4-40 by Huddersfield. When you're St Helens.

Browny gave everything for St George. But I don't think he's a coach who's going to offer us much in terms of developing a fairly ordinary roster and attracting high calibre recruits.

It's easier to make a case that Bellamy would have done those things.
