Don't think Merrin was "terrible" by any stretch .. for a 21 y/o in his debut match, he did fine .. no mistakes, took hitups when given the ball (and a couple of them were good, he dragged 3 defenders a few metres), plus made a tackle a minute during his time on the field.

True.

5 hit ups for 28ms is pretty awesome

The only part of the field that was entirely Dragons was our right hand side ... how often did QLD break through down there?

Oh yeah ... NEVER.

How often in the past did Inglis, Boyd and Thurston carve us to pieces down that side of the field?? Almost every f**king game, that's how often.

What Stuart needs to do is get Hornby and Cooper out of retirement so that QLD can't make metres on either side of the field, and then get Weyman and Hunt so they can't make metres in the middle.

You know it's true.

How many farkin times has cooper shut down anyone in origin you muppet? I seem to recall Beau Scott jumping out of the line to try and smash Lockyer and leaving a massive hole for Slater to stroll through and score.

You actually want to drop our most threatening player(Jennings) for Cooper lol GTFOH.

Put the Whole Dragons team in the SOO team, tell them they are playing for 2 extra bonus NRL points and I will bet all I got that the NSW RED DRAGONS will put 20 points on the QLD team and win series.
Any takers?

Picking St George's forwards are the problem the thing is Dragons fans say well we contained Scott well against the Cowboys despite the fact he made 175 metres from 18 hit ups.

Creagh is a glorified centre you cannot afford them in Origin it is the same reason why Dave Taylor is rarely picked for Queensland.

Merrin was very poor all this oh Merrin did well 5 hit ups for 28 metres is pathetic no other word for it.

Young a good club player he deserved a shot but he proved he is only a good club player.

Weyman over the past 2 years was absolutely dominated in Origin. Dominated Dragons forwards don't like getting hit hard and the heat put on them. They cannot handle it in the past 2 years alone we have seen there forwards dominated i mean obliterated by the Broncons,Panthers,Manly,Raiders,Sharks.

I will give Scott some credit because he went alright not anything outstanding but he was solid.

This is NSW problem they pick the wrong front rowers and Ben Creagh, TLL has to be there because he has performed at Origin, Then you have to pick the next best Merrin is in no way shape or form a better front rower then Tim Grant no f**king way.

I laugh also that our right side of defence wasn't penetrated that was where the winning try was scored !!!

Morris also has to be dropped he is like Luke Rooney at representitive level but half as good. He is a good finisher but because our forwards were so shit with the exception of the back row who were all solid. He doesn't get a chance to finish off tries, He doesn't really help in regards to hit ups either.

I don't mean this as trolling but all the Dragons forwards picked for NSW over the past 4 years have all been terrible. There is a reason for this there was a reason you were labeled chokers.

It is the same reason Dragons forwards in big games can't take the heat of a good forward pack. This is a fact they defend well on there line which makes them look heroic but in all honesty good front rowers make too much ground against the Dragons for them to be considered for representative football.

It isn't all on them but the fact people call for Weyman,Creagh all the time is wrong they aren't up to it. Merrin isn't up to it he might be one day but he isn't at all at the moment.

NSW really need to move away from Dragons forwards really, If NSW are to ever win a series they are going to need to find at least another 3-4 forwards who can make 100 metres a game in that atmosphere and pressure.

Which is why Creagh has to go because as others have said on here he is basically a centre he can't make ground up the middle. This is about the 3rd origin in a row where he has only had 4 hit ups plenty of players can run a decoy it isn't so difficult.

Merrin needs to go because he is nowhere near up for it.

Weyman must never be selected again because he had the same problems.

For me it has to be

Tolman
Snowden ( last chance)
Mannah ( he needs to be more involved)
TLL
Grant
Galloway
Fifita
Douglas
Tilse

all of these front rowers need to be the next in line. We have huge depth in the front row which makes it baffling we picked Trent Merrin. King was obviously Fulton's token Manly player.

Except for the game winning try. Or have you wiped that from your memory? Scott over pursues Lockyer, opening up the obvious inside pass to Slater.

No way. Dude, he is the future. Anyone can have a bad game. He is the future with TLL, Mannah and Tolman. If we get these guys to play every origin game, when they hit their peak at 26~27, we'll be dominating the middle of the ruck Matt Scott style!

Snowden should be there. Merrin should not. Lack of possession will hurt any props numbers, but there was zero sting in the NSW forward pack. Beau Scott loves to get tough after the tackle, but nowhere else.

What about Ashton Sims? He's no superstar, but he could come and belt some Queenslanders for 20-25 minutes in the second half to help lift them. Might drop the ball and cost them the game, though.

IMO this forward pack would be far more intimidating and not afraid to shy away from a huge workload. They might also actually stand a chance at getting ontop of the QLD pack. Or atleast holding their own against it.

8. Kade Snowden
- Has yet to play a great rep game IMO, but he's definitely better then the others were for NSW and if we had a decent forward pack to support him he would go much better.
9. Robbie Farah - I can't stand Michael Ennis and his grubby plays and stupid mistakes. He had a solid game for us, but I think Robbie Farah should be the future #9 for NSW. He's more creative and brings more to the table IMO.
10. Tim Grant - He's very QLD prop like. When Petero was out last week, Tim Grant played 63 minutes and made 17 hit ups for 130m gained, 37 tackles for 2 missed. Petero has groomed him for us.
11. Luke Lewis - He is so versatile and play a workhorse role if needed, or he can be lethal running on the edges and putting the blokes outside him in gaps if we get some ball. He's more then fit having played the last 160 minutes for the Panthers.
12. Greg Bird - Shift him to the right side and have him link with Gasnier. Boyd read the right hand side plays well and it's no surprise given the amount of games he has played with Soward, Scott and Gasnier. Let Bird and Pearce work with Gasnier on the right. The club combination was actual a negative for us with Boyd out there.
13. Paul Gallen - Aside from the brain explosion in the goal, he had a pretty good game. Although if our props don't start getting more involved, we should move Gallen to the front row. He plays like a prop anyway IMO.

14. Tom Learoyd-Lahrs - Forget his club form this year. He was good for NSW last year and is well suited to Origin.
15. Tim Mannah - Has been solid in limited time for NSW. Doesn't shy away from the workload even if he's getting smashed. Although if we picked a decent forward pack he and Snowden would be more effective.
16. Anthony Watmough - Like TLL he has been good for NSW in the past and seems to fire up for the blues. I guarantee QLD are more scared of this bloke then Ben Creagh or Beau Scott. He might not be a rock in defence, but he has an awesome build for bumping players off when he runs the ball.
17. Kurt Gidley - I don't like or rate him that highly. But he has more to offer then Dean Young and his last game off the bench for NSW was pretty decent.

I have no issue with the Dragons players. I just feel these blokes are better or atleast more suited to State of Origin. I would still have Mark Gasnier in the side as I believe he and Justin Hodges are the best/most consistent right centres int he game. I would also have Jamie Soward as he held his own defensively and played quiet well considering he was behind a well beaten forward pack. The only issue I had was Boyds ability to read his plays.

I think our defensive effort was pretty bloody good tbh, and the dragons influence probably helped us there.

Im glad this thread has moved away from the silly ridiculous attempts to say NSW played or attempted to play anything like the way the Dragons so
