The halves are shocking but they are not responsible for the easy metres the opposition get when they roll down through the middle of our forwards.
Our forwards best defensive work is when we are within 10m of our goal line but far too many long range breaks from offloads are made against us.
The attacking side poor through the holes in our much vaunted "D", we struggle to get back on side and then the attack either passes or kicks out to the wings and the overlap and inevitable tries appear.
We keep talking it up including our forwards because we look at players individually but as a team most components of our game are shit house and the scoreboard invariably reflects it.

OT I agree with your comments on the easy metres gained up the middle , its been happening since 2010.....and our best defensive work is your right 10m out from our goal....if only our attack was as effective 10m out from the oppositions try line...and that you can put squarely on our halves in particularly Widdop...in short I have absolutely no confidence 10m out in our blokes getting the pill over the paint...just rarely happens these days

One of the problems, as already mentioned in earlier posts...

At least Vaughan stated he was unhappy with his own performance that was refreshingly honest for one of our players.

Agree OT but he probably hasn't adjusted to McWrecker's acceptance of mediocrity yet having just come from another club

Remember watching my first games at Kogarah 69/70, went to school accross the road, lived in Jubilee Ave and have been a tragic since.

We had a lot of bad years over that period but even in those bad years there was good exciting footy, passion and genuine hope.

The start and end of last year were the Dragons lowest points for me - until yesterday. Don't remember being so unexcited about round 1 ever.

Hope what they say about rock bottom is true.

Widdop said that it is good that there are players fighting for positions for our first game.
To me he thinks that he is a walk up start for the team. He should be worried about holding his own position.

Things are not that bad. Only need one decent half. McCrone is hardly a superstar but he again proved, he is an honest and reliable toiler who doesn't make many mistakes. Not the best but not the worst either. So that only leaves one more with a little talent and spark and determination. 3 things Widdop is hopelessly lacking.

But I believe such a player may be right under our noses in Mann and another who hopefully will be ready for regular first grade by the end of the season in Field. I wonder if Dufty could make a go of 5/8? As a fullback from what I have seen and heard, he has excellent ball-playing skills.
Widdop has to go yet all the paper talk is about "finding a halves partner for Widdop"!!!!

So say we do lose our first 6 games, who would they realistically be able to bring in as a caretaker coach for the final 20 rounds? Anyone would be better ofcourse but I wonder who it would be?

Good work Crush great to see you hanging in with us.
You feel all the pain at first but then the numbness sets in and then you learn to live with the paralysis that comes after that.
Occasionally the sunshine breaks through and warms the face a little.
Re the coach I really don't think there is anyone unless Tony Smith puts his hand up for the short stint.

Surely it's obvious Widdop is way out of his depth. He more or less blamed Benji for not giving him early ball and running across the field.
So what the excuse for Sundays inept performance. MCCRONE gave him good ball, and he still made a complete F/up of nearly every touch.Kicked to early , run sideways, misted tackles and that was just in the first/half.
Please give Nona ago...& dump WIDDOP.

Obviously Lafai is not worried either

Few answers for dire Dragons but Paul McGregor keeping head up

Paul McGregor put on a brave face on Sunday night after a final pre-season hit-out that bordered on woeful at times and provide little reason to believe that St George Illawarra can be one of the competition's improvers this season.

The under-pressure Dragons coach is understandably refusing to hit the panic button with the joint-venture's round one fixture against Penrith at Jubilee Oval still a fortnight away, but there was not a lot to like about their Charity Shield defeat.

McGregor labelled the performance against South Sydney "a good hit-out for a final trial", although later amended that summation to conclude that "there was some good and bad in it".

"You don't like the performance when you get beaten by that scoreline," he said of a 32-14 defeat at ANZ Stadium that featured a second-half capitulation.

"Certainly it was about giving people opportunity and leaving players out there for longer minutes, which we did. Certainly our cohesion will pick up because that is the first time that group has played together. We created some opportunities.

"Defensively, I thought that was the area where we need to improve from this game. Our goal line D is something that needs improvement. But trials are about putting people out there and giving people opportunities."

If you were to look into the record of those reporters, I think you will find that at worst, none of them will lose a wink of sleep at what Widdiot is doing to this team. Most will likely sleep better as a result. Last year they blamed Marshall for Widdop, which Widdop enthusiastically promoted, so I would guess this year they will just ignore it as much as possible. To turn around and start blaming someone else for Widdop this year will risk their credibility too much.

It speaks volumes of the breathtaking incompetence of our coaching staff to have not moved on the Widdop problem long before now!

Regardless Benji was still shit anyway.
