Dragons put red line through Todd Carney, Jackson Hastings joining club

Or put him in a spine with Slater, Cronk and Smith. Widdop was always a risk leaving Melbourne. Like how much does a 5/8th need to do playing in a spine with those blokes? It all would of been spoon fed to him.

Despite your obvious need for a half you have dodged a bullet here imo. Carney is a f**kwit and Hastings is terrible, he couldn't hold a spot in the 15th placed team this year and by all reports he is real arrogant little f**ker. Widdop is serviceable but needs to be paired with a genuine half who can control things and look after most of the kicking.
Primarily we need a coach first. Recruitment should be secondary to that. But alas...

If we needed to free up cap space, Widdop would be the obvious choice as I doubt he would have any shortage of suitors and we could probably get full cap value for him. That would of course leave us likely with McCrone and Hutchison as our halves. I mean really, we are buggered anyway with Mary and our management calling the shots.

Yep new coach plus admin is what you guys really need. I think Cleary would of been great for you guys but who knows what happened there..it seems your admin is standing in the way of the club moving forward...anyway tough times to be a Saints fan but hang in there you will come out of the other side of it eventually.

I am not so sure of this. Our management has the stench of death about them. They continue to make excuses and have no plan to actually make the club successful again both on and off the field. Everything is knee jerk reaction kind of stuff. I can't see how they are going to dig themselves out of the hole they have dug and they seem to be happy to live on past glories and ride this club into the ground. My grand father was a massive Norths fan. It seems to me we are heading for their path.

James Maloney.

Widdop just needs a decent coach. He's a handy scapegoat but he's not the problem. His confidence and career have been murdered by lack of decent coaching for 3 years

A good coach isn't going to make Widdop have a better kicking game or vision if he doesn't have it by now, no doubt he would improve under a better coach as the team improves but I don't think Maloney proves anything. He was always a good player imo, Played in GFs with every team he has been in since Melbourne and won 2. He didn't even play FG consistently down there.

Widdop just doesn't have the skills or talent to be a really good or great half. He can be an offsider but not the main guy imo.

Edit: Its not really vision he lacks but more game management, he goes for big plays at the wrong time etc

Couldn't agree more, I actually think Widdop is a good footy player.

As the Coaching the past 3 years goes from sh!t to sh!ttier, so have most of the playing group.

Can only imagine what the Coaching will be like in 2017, is sh!tiest even a word.

It's confidence. He had those attributes at Melbourne, and brought them here at the beginning of his stint. His confidence has been coached out of him. He's not the problem.

Maloney has had good coaches at those teams

Me thinks that the only way that it will change , is if Mary finds himself smack bang in the way of a rampaging Mose Masoe during pre-season training !

I believe that he would be able to knock some sense into anyone that was silly enough to stand in his way . :p

If we had Jesus Christ at 5/8,even he would of struggled under Mary's game plans.
Imo Widdop looked good against Cronulla, i believe we had 11 offloads in the first half.No coincidence there

Mary is our ongoing problem but we are stuck with him for another year.Hopefully JD will be given a greater say.If things go bad in early rounds Mary will be let loose.

I think the clubs run by the NRL will be pressured into signing only select players of interest for the foreseeable future. Whatever protects their investment in the brand.

Look at Newcastle, plenty of off contract players that would improve the roster ten fold but not a single worthwhile signing. Wonder if players are waiting for a change in regime before considering the dragons as a future employer

Earlier in the year I was all for the Dragons to sign Carney . However now that he has in some way or other managed to ' shat ' his bed whilst in Frogland , I am glad that we didn't .

It is truly amazing that he just does not learn from his previous mistakes . We have all had a lapse in judgement when we were young , some more than others , but finally you grasp the error of your ways and move on . That is how people mature , but not so this chap .

It seems that he is destined to be one of those players who had the world at their feet , but because of his absolute stupidly , he will end up being remembered as the player who threw it all away .

What a waste of talent .

He has a great talent for getting into trouble and continues to do so, so his talent is not waisted at all from his point of view.
Football merely provides him the platform to get notoriety.

... and these are the very reasons I was against signing him right from the very start!
