Kingsgrove Colts junior Hame Sele will realise a lifelong dream when he makes his NRL debut for St George Illawarra against Manly.
Sele was named by Dragons coach Paul McGregor to take on the high-flying Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Saturday after having been selected in St George Illawarra’s squad for every game so far this season without playing a minute.
The 20-year-old’s inclusion comes at the expense of another St George junior, with Jacob Host dropped to reserve grade.
Sele said he was excited to get a crack at NRL level.
“It’s been a dream for me growing up to play NRL,” he said.
“Mary came up to me while the boys were training and told me I was making my debut this weekend. I was pretty shocked. A lot of nerves came straight through me [but] also excitement.
“Growing up playing for Kingsgrove it’s been my dream to make my debut for St George so I’m really nervous to plus this week but also excited.
“I’ve always been in the reserves. I don’t find it like a disappointment but a good thing, getting that step closer.
“Manly are going well. They’ve got a few big boys there so hopefully I go alright.”
Country Origin centre Euan Aitken returns from a hamstring complaint, with fullback Josh Dugan aiming for the ANZAC Day clash against the Sydney Roosters to return from his own hamstring injury suffered in the win over the Wests Tigers.
Dugan’s absence has forced a reshuffle of St George Illawarra’s backline, with Renown United junior Jason Nightingale switching to fullback after his hat-trick of tries last weekend.
Kurt Mann, who was excellent on his return to the Dragons side against the Tigers, has shifted to the left wing.
McGregor said he was comfortable with the reshuffle.
“Euan could have played last week but we wanted to not put him at risk in that situation this early in the season,” he said.
“Kurt came in and attacked the game. He certainly wouldn’t have lost his position in the team. It’s good to see that sort of pressure applied with our outside backs. Euan gets an opportunity and Kurt moves to the left wing.
“Jason’s a hardened professional. He’s a tough type of player which is needed.”
