Dragons vs Hull

Mann, Dufty, Widdop, Nighty great. McDonald classy finishing. Very strong short stint from Kurr, hopefully grabs a spot in the 17.
We were understandably flat but 5 try's against a match fit SL side is nothing to sneeze at.

Middle third D was disappointing, although goaline D was pretty good considering the amount of pressure Hull FC were applying in that first half.

All in all, a great initial hit out for the lads. Great to see so many of the juniors starting to break through into the big red V.
Good summary Tumbi.

Dufty had a very good game. If you can't see that your biased is blinding you. Just listen to the commentary, they were full of praise for him. Only thing he did wrong was get carried into touch once. His positional play was good. He didn't miss any one on one tackles. Obviously little guys don't make try saving one on one tackles on their own line like dugan did.
If you are critical of that performance Id hate to see what you would say if he had a bad game.
Is Dufty similar size to Lachlan Coote?I’ve seen Coote make some amazing 1 on 1 tackles and try savers.

Hull beaten 24-18 by St George Ilawarra

Liam Watts touches down for Hull
Hull will return home from their New South Wales tour empty handed after going down 24-18 to St George Illawarra in Sydney.

The Black and Whites produced a valiant effort, with Albert Kelly scoring two first-half tries to give them an interval lead, and they were level at 18-18 until Kurt Mann went over for the all-important try with five minutes left.

Beaten 24-10 by Wigan a week earlier in the first Super League match to be staged outside Europe, Hull produced a fitting response in an entertaining clash at ANZ Stadium.

They were without skipper Danny Houghton, vice-captain Scott Taylor

and experienced second rower Mark Minichiello, but Kelly showed his class and there were also impressive contributions from winger Bureta Faraimo and prop Liam Watts.

St George had England prop James Graham and Australia half-back Ben Hunt making their first appearances, along with former Hull KR and Wakefield forward Mitch Allgood, but it was England international Gareth Widdop who proved the difference.

Hull were full of invention from the start, with full-back Jamie Shaul splitting the Dragons defence with a scything run and second rower Sika Manu reaching the line only to lose the ball in Widdop's last-gasp tackle.

It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead, Kelly releasing Jake Connor and regathering the centre's neat kick to touch down for his first try.

St George struck back with two tries in 13 minutes through centre Tim Lafai and winger Jason Nightingale but Widdop was only able to add one conversion and Hull turned around in front thanks to the skill of Kelly.

It was a chance created from nothing as the former Gold Coast Titans half-back took Marc Sneyd's pass from dummy half and smashed a hole in the Dragons' defence to grab his second try.

Sneyd's second conversion made it 12-10 but Hull had a let-off three minutes before half-time when prop Jeremy Latimore had a try disallowed by the video referee for a knock-on.

The Australian side made the better start to the second half and Widdop was instrumental in slick backline moves that produced two tries in five minutes for Papua New Guinea winger Nene Macdonald.

The tries were scored too far out for Widdop to improve and a six-point lead was wiped out after 55 minutes when Watts powered his way over for Hull's third try, with Sneyd kicking his third goal.

A draw might have been a fair result but Hull were under the cosh in the last 10 minutes and their defence finally cracked to allow Mann a way through and Jai Field added the conversion.

St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty shines but Dragons rusty against Hull

Matt Dufty ensured he will start the NRL season with the St George Illawarra No.1 on his back after starring in the Red V's scratchy 24-18 win over Hull FC at ANZ Stadium.

While the Dragons suffered ring rust in their first game of the pre-season, Dufty outshone Paul McGregor's star recruits Ben Hunt and James Graham in their first outing for the joint venture.

In just 70 minutes of game time against the English Super League outfit, the 22-year-old speedster ran for 200 metres and made two line breaks in a stand-out performance.

After debuting in round 20 last year, and getting a taste of NRL in the last seven games of the season, he reinforced his star qualities and his place as Josh Dugan's long-term replacement as the Dragons' fullback.

St George Illawarra's Tim Lafai hits the ball up during the pre-season trial against Hull FC. (AAP)

His scything run set up Tim Lafai's try before having a hand in Jason Nightingale's go-ahead four-pointer in the 27th minute.

He showed he wasn't afraid to chime into the back line and on several occasions gave the Dragons another ball-playing option, a dimension they haven't had since the departure of Darius Boyd.

"He's exciting," Dragons coach McGregor said of Dufty.

"He's had a really good pre-season, much better than his previous one. He's a player that we're looking forward to seeing the best out of this year.

"He's at a nice age, speed is his asset.

"First game of the year, he did what he needed to do to get a start next week."

Hunt showed promise in his first hit out in the Red V, with Lafai and Jeremy Latimore almost scoring off his boot in the first half.

Two tries to former Gold Coast half Albert Kelly ensured Hull took a 12-10 lead into the break and after Liam Watts barged over with 24 minutes remaining to make it 18-18, the visitors were threatening to steal it.

After Hunt, Dufty, Gareth Widdop and Cameron McInnes were taken off for the final 10 minutes, it was left to utility Kurt Mann to save face, diving over for a soft try to seal the victory.

Graham was mixed in his 25 minute stint, dropping the ball inside his own half early but was otherwise solid, making 32 metres from four runs and 12 tackles.

McGregor said he was alarmed by his side's lack of line speed at times.

"We worked extremely hard on working off our line, absorbing pressure through line speed, it was something we pulled back in the second half," he said.

"We didn't have it early."

My take always:
- Our attacking structure is VERY concerning. We lacked the punch in the forwards (granted, we are coming off a tough pre-season) but we attempted to go too wide, too early and still the shit with going around teams. Doesnt work and worries me for the season coming.
- Even with Hunt on board, I reckon Widdop will still be our go-to man to provide most of the point-scoring opportunities.
- Dufty looks very promising. Needs a bit more polish, worries me a bit that he seems to rely on getting outside a player (leads to running sideways) but definitely provides some spark and will have a good season.
- Mann is a far superior RC option to Aitken.
- Luc was unimpressive IMO. Doesnt provide much consistency, seems to fall behind the tempo of the game a bit. Held his own when the ball came near him, but I maintain that he is far better as an 'impact' style player until he gets used to the speed of NRL. Definitely have better options in Sims (based on last year) and Host (limited opportunities tonight, but his post-contact metres are insane and his angles/timing are great). I'd prefer the later based on what's missing from our prop rotation.
- Kerr was surprisingly impressive in his stint. Should be looking to debut at some point this year. I liked the look of Lawrie at first but his errors were getting out of hand. Sele also looked solid, but is still not a prop.
- Garrick is very underdone. Lacked a lot of confidence and struggled with the tempo of the game. By comparison, Lomax came in with a lot of confidence and looked to get involved. Wont start, but will get a shot throughout the year.
- Robson is going to be a gun.
- Nene is going to have so much fun this year, playing on the left outside Lafai and Widdop.
- We are still a mid-table team at this point.

Both small but very different builds.
Dufty is young and has a young mans body with some muscle bulk popping out on his arms and legs.
He will need a season or maybe two for his torso shape to develop fully and mature.
His positional sense in attack is 2nd to none and his defence will improve by playing at NRL level and I think he will go ok front on defending one one.
For sure his goal line defence will not be as good as Dugan

Agree Benny...couldn't believe all the Block plays in the first half...Looks predictable and similar to previous years. Its almost as if The Coaching staff have limited ideas in terms of attacking plays and just keep recycling the same ones.

Dufty stars in Dragons trial win

STANDOUT: Matt Dufty breaks into the clear in the Dragons 24-18 win over Hull at ANZ Stadium. Picture: AAP

PRIOR to Saturday’s clash with Hull at ANZ Stadium, Dragons coach Paul McGregor said young-gun Matt Dufty had “the inside running” for the club’s No.1 jumper.

The 21-year-old now looks five lengths clear following his performance in his side’s 24-18 win over the Super League heavyweights.

The diminutive livewire asked plenty of questions of the Hull defence and ran for more than 200 metres in a 68-minute stint at the back.

He also linked well with new No. 7 Ben Hunt on the right edge and it appears only an untimely injury will stop him building on his seven NRL appearances come round one.

“He’s had a really good preseason, much better than his previous one,” McGregor said.

“He’s into his third one now so he’s a player we’re looking forward to seeing the best out of this year. I think what he’ll get out of it was that his conditioning was better than at any time last year.

“He’s a nice age, he’s put on a bit of weight, his speed is his asset. He’s a bloke who can cover a lot of ground and go between both edges. When the ball goes long he can get across the back on the next shift.

“It gives us another option to ball-play at the fullback position which we haven’t had for a while. After a tough preseason to go out and play like that was good for the kid.”

Dufty was the bright light in an otherwise patchy display from the Dragons who trailed 12-10 at halftime on the back of two tries to former Sharks and Titans half Albert Kelly.

Hull were match-hardened but far from full strength with skipper Danny Houghton and key forward Mark Minichello both casualties of their clash with Wigan in Wollongong last week.

Still, inspired largely by Kelly, the reigning Challenge Cup champions gave the Dragons all they could handle for the best part of the 80 minutes before Kurt Mann sealed the win five minutes from fulltime.

Just how much one can read into trial performances is a topic for debate but fans will hope the solid rather than spectacular performance was merely a case of blowing out the cobwebs.

In what was their first outing as a pair, new-look halves Hunt and Gareth Widdop linked only sparingly throughout, instead focusing their efforts on their respective edges.

Hunt ultimately put in a 72-minute stint while coach Paul McGregor pulled Widdop, Dufty and Cam McInnes from the park with the result still in the balance 12 minutes from fulltime.

McGregor said both Tyson Frizell and Jack de Belin, who missed Saturday’s clash, will return for next weekend’s Charity Shield against Souths as he hones in on his final 17 for round one.

“It was a good opportunity to give 25 players a bit of game time,” McGregor said.

“[Hull] played a couple of games and a couple of trials beforehand so they were bit [more] game-hardened.

“We’ve had a couple of opposed sessions and we probably took the game with that attitude defensively so we’ll need to be better.

“We got through the game with no injuries which is really good. Tyson [Frizell] and Jack de Belin will play good minutes next week against Souths.

“It’s all about round one, it’s not about today, it’s not about next week, but certainly building into round one’s important over the next two weeks.”

Kelly scored the opening try 10 minutes in, putting Jake Connor away down the right-hand flank and backing up on the inside to gather his centre’s grubber and plant the ball under the posts.

Marc Sneyd converted for a 6-0 lead. It was short-lived with Tim Lafai opening the Dragons account at the other end after a deft offload from Paul Vaughan.

Widdop nailed the sideline conversion to level things up and six apiece.

The Dragons took the lead through veteran winger Jason Nightingale, who crossed in the right-hand corner after a nice exchange of passing from Hunt and Dufty.

Widdop’s conversion attempt was waved away keeping he score at 10-6 12 minutes before halftime.

The visitors took the lead again through Kelly, who stepped his way across from close range to post his second try next to the posts. Sneyd added the extras for a two-point cushion at 12-10 five minutes out from the break.

Nene Macdonald scored out wide seven minutes after the resumption with Widdop’s conversion attempt bouncing off the upright and keeping the score at 14-10.

Macdonald had his second six minutes later with a tough finish from a Widdop long-ball to push the margin out to six at 18-12.

Hull leveled up quickly through prop Liam Watts who caught some sluggish Dragons defence napping on their try-line.

Sneyd made no mistake with the conversion again squaring the ledger at 18-all with 22 minutes to play.

Hull pressed hard for a a go-ahead try before Mann sealed the game for the Dragons five minutes from time after being re-injected into the match as a replacement for Widdop.

I don’t see many changes for the first game of the season. This was just a trial and was an opportunity to give all the players a run.
Dufty was the standout, he missed a one on one tackle. In fairness Sims and/or Widdop missed the player.
Hunt showed us what he can do with his kicking. It might take a few rounds to settle In.
The forwards did not have JDB or Frizzle. They will make a high difference when they are back. But we are going to miss Thompson.

Reasonably happy as a Hull fan. At one point we had a forward pack full of 20 year olds - matongo/fash/litten/lane/Turgut who haven't had a lot of 1st grade and they put in a good stint. What was obvious compared to last week is the handling errors were reduced. In Super League we use a Rhino ball, and when it gets wet through rain or humidity it's like a bar of soap and the players hate it. With the steeden we looked a different side to last weekend. Have a good season guys!

Great summary, Dufty made some metres but was crowding his backline by continually trying to get outside the defence. I am still not convinced he is the answer for fullback, my concerns were how easily he was manhandled, his goal line defence and as mentioned continually trying to run around players.

Host has been criticised but for me he looked great, ran hard and bent the defence and hit hard in defence.

Mann infinitely better than Aitken, running, passing defending he was better at them all.

Lawrie a lot of energy but a lot of errors.

Garrick did not look like he is ready for first grade, Lomax though looked like he was meant to be there.

McNicholls looked like a really good half when he came on.

Carlton, Dufty is a little bloke, he is going to get man-handled. But he is exciting and he hits the ball at speed.
Who would you play at fullback if not Dufty? Mann? Field? Those guys are also pretty slight and won't defend like dugan did on the line.

Great effort by our boys, shook the ship a bit by the early tries by Hull but we kept our composure and played well. Our full back, centres and wings, halves and forwards (including the young guys) stepped up which was great to see!

Haven't seen the game so can't comment on that but let me guess - everyone who thought particular players were shit still think they're shit and the blokes you like went well? About right?
Haha, pretty much.

Yeah, Dufty’s first run was great, got outside his man and through a hole. Needs to realise that won’t happen every time though. Will come with experience, his acceleration is sot of deceptive and he’ll grow as a player.

And I also don’t get the criticism of Host, I reckon it’s a case of some people hitching their wagon to the Leilua train and wanting to talk down the competition. In reality, he played wel and put his hand up for Thommo’s spot. His defense was very good, save for his contribution to the Watts try (which is more on Sele, who didn’t move up with the defensive line). And as mention, he was great with ball in hand, hitting the line hard and making 5-10m post contact every time. The way he angled his run to isolate edge defenders is exactly what is needed from edge backrowers.
