Dufty finally gets a game

Ran sideways a lot.
There's a huge difference between running sideways and sideways crabbing, like Bunji used to do or Widdop does on a bad day.

This young man is running sideways and has the speed to exploit even a hint of doubt in the opposition or the slightest gap.

He doesn't need to wait to be put into a gap he creates gaps.

Exciting stuff.

Dufty starting at full back! I feel like we have had a victory already and the game hasn't started. This is what all of us on the Forum have been campaigning for about 6 weeks. Obviously Mary reads the Forum to get some ideas but doesn't react immediately because he wants to claim the selections as his own. Onya Mary!! Anything else we can help you with?

Go Matt and the Dragons!
Gee, if Mary reads the forum I would have to be one of the members he hates the most. About time he selected Dufty. All along it was said he needed to play it safe. Well that proved to be a stupid idea didn't it? While playing it safe he lost game after game and when he finally picked Dufty at fullback, we thrashed Manly; a result way against the pridictions of most bookies, punters and rugby league fans.

So Jai Field and Kurt Mann are out of the equation for FB now I suppose?
I'm really hoping Dufty goes on with it but we need a back up FB and half for inevitable injuries. I think Mann and Field will not only be great back ups but will keep the entire backline (1-7) on their toes.
We should never be in a position to play Nighty at FB again. Nighty might be a good second choice 9 though?

I was thinking about this earlier today. Put Mann on wing and Flo to the bench. Mann knows how to find the try line and you lose nothing in his utility value. If someone from 1-7 goes down, Mann covers and Flo comes on to the wing. It also gives Flo the chance to extend his career. Win-win.

If he reads this forum why hasn't he sacked himself??

DFL,
Life is not hat simple. Mary's personality has set a few puzzles for the amateur psychologists on this Forum. But from what I understand "he bleeds red and white". So once hearing after season 2016 that the Dragons' Board had faith that he has the potential to become a successful NRL coach who is he to quibble? Just like you can't blame McCrone for being one of Mary's favourite selections in 2017 nor Jake Marketo in 2016, you can't blame Mary for trying to last long enough in the job to reach that potential the Board (and the Board alone) has perceived. And I do understand that when the Committee of Review looked at Mary's efforts after 2016 it was suggested to him that when he has no bloody idea who to select that he could do much worse than peruse this Forum.

ALSGI and Kiama,
For 2018 I think the idea of Nighty on the bench is a very good one. The problem this year has been that while Mary's decision to have a backline utility on the bench has been warranted in about 50% of games it has been a wasted use of a bench spot the other 50% of games, putting more pressure on the hard working forwards trying to provide the go-forward. Remembering Nighty's performances from the bench back in 2009 when big Dell was on the wing I think he would do a fabulous job at 17. Experienced dummy-half runner, defends well, often came off the bench into the backrow in 2009 and has played wing, centre and FB.

Great lateral and perceptive thinking guys!

Possm,
I do not think you have to worry about Mary. I reckon he would love your criticisms of the Recruitment Officer. And I can just hear him saying that the Club would not be in the mess you have referred to one once or twice if he had retained control of Recruitment.

Not really. We would be going into 2018 at the moment with our options open. Dufty has an opportunity and hopefully he becomes that fullback we are looking for but if not the club will consider other options.

I said a few weeks back when Duges signed for the Sharks, this would light a fire in Field, Dufty and Mann as they are the 3 options at FB we have. There is a vacancy for a FB role next year in a side that will contain Ben Hunt, Gareth Widdop and our forward pack. Of course these guys would be jumping out of their skins.

Dufty has been the first to make a serious move, but don't discount the other 2 either.

And hence I wasn't so keen to crucify Millward for not re-signing Duges as there was always a chance someone else would put their hand up.
