Don't know what's wrong with Dufty but he is having a poor game for Illawarra today. No speed, no elusiveness.
Illawarra well beaten by Blacktown who is coming last in the competition. Matt Head has plenty of work to do because this team is playing poorly.
Heads team selections are a mystery especially last week and again today. But, I think it highlights some serious shortcomings we have if we suddenly get a string of injuries or suspensions etc. There seems no-one ready to make the jump to NRL standard (at this stage). Obviously the younger players need time for development, but it appears the more experienced players aren't putting in. All seems strange that the majority of them are off contract and I would have thought they would be at least trying to get noticed.
Also since Levi Dodd did his knee, the team has been terrible. Not suggesting he's the outstanding player or whatever, but his defense is something really missed by the team and the backline has no "glue".
Leilua and Kerr along with Sele are the forwards putting their hand up for first grade. For some reason Host didn't go well; maybe he's playing with an injury.
No one in the Illawarra backline deserves promotion to first grade. Even Milne who I thought should be in the team, missed important tackles in the short time he was on the field in first grade yesterday.
It seems that instead of promoting a back, Mary might be forced to send Macdonald to reserve grade as his form has dropped significantly.
Duffy lacks defense - his attack is great but in the NRL you cant replace the defense that Dugan , Widdop, Mcrone do..its impossible to be asking Dufty, Field, or anyone else to step up into 1st grade and tackle like these beasts do..
Did anyone else notice that dufty wasn't reading the attack at all when illawarra were defending their line?
A couple of kicks into the in-goal saw dufty way out of position and what was concerning was his lack of urgency to get to the ball.
I'm worried that he won't make it to the next level. Early days though.
He doesn't seem to be the same player as last year. He needs to get back to that form otherwise he just might get to first grade. I do hope he can regain his mojo
From all accounts, besides a lack of form. 'attitude' is also hindering Dufty's progress. I've heard that his personality doesn't endear him with some teammates. To me, it's blatantly obvious that McGregor would choose at lease three alternatives (Dugan, Nightingale, and Mann) before resorting to Dufty. Early signs indicate his career path will tread the same path as Evander Cummins.
Dufty's name did not receive a mention in Millward's rant on pathways for juniors. I believe unless he picks up form real soon, he will find himself languishing in the lower grades until contract's end.
I hope Dufty doesn't end up being another Evander Cummins. If Dugan doesn't re-sign, he will have a huge opportunity to nail down a 1st grade spot next year if he gets his act together.
Dufty has always needed more time anyway and hes coming off injury and has just started nsw cup. Hopefully he can improve as the season goes. He has the opportunity to earn that spot rest is up to him
