Dufty ?

He needs to learn how to defend. How to read the attack and when and where the kickers are kicking.
The good fullbacks are always in position to clean up the grubber, defuse the bomb, make that try-saving tackle.
Dufty looks nowhere when those plays go down.

From all accounts, besides a lack of form. 'attitude' is also hindering Dufty's progress. I've heard that his personality doesn't endear him with some teammates. To me, it's blatantly obvious that McGregor would choose at lease three alternatives (Dugan, Nightingale, and Mann) before resorting to Dufty. Early signs indicate his career path will tread the same path as Evander Cummins.
Had a chat to Matt Dufty at the Members' function, after Round 1. He seemed very quiet and humble. Didn't seem to have 'attitude' when I met him.

You would want to think that by offering him a 3 year deal that recruitment and coaching staff are seeing things that we aren't seeing- he has raw attAcking talent but he's a f**king doormat in defence - absolutely horrendous defender!!

The issue, as I see it. was that Dufty, was really the last one (major) to be signed from the U20's. I remember, the forum was howling at Millward and co to get him signed, and it took a long time to get it done.
I wonder wether that they saw some issues with him then that we weren't privy to and only decided to re-sign him as a back up for Field (who Millward anointed as our next fullback in that podcast).
No doubt he has heaps of attacking flair, speed and potential, but, as many point out already, his defense is woeful and it's being exposed now that he is playing against men. So, he has 2yrs to grow and develop and I doubt we will see him in 1st grade this year based on his 6 games with Illawarra so far.

We saw that against the SeaQueens
Yeah he missed a tackle in UnManly's first try, but his defensive issues outweigh his attacking attributes. With the rest of 2017 and preseason with the big boys his defensive game will evolve naturally. We're not gonna win the comp this year and Duges going to scumulla , so why not give both guys the best of both worlds to get them used to their 2018 positions

No, sorry I got that last post wrong, his attacking attributes outweigh his defensive issues with experience and time will come good, is what I was trying to say

I kept hearing the reason to keep Duges and pay him big $$$$ to stay was that he was the best defensive fullback in the game. Well that's all well and good but our success rate with the games best defensive fullback was ordinary. One lone 8th place in 4 years. Hence I pleaded for a change.

Billy Slater was hardly a defensive powerhouse when he started his career. Neither was Ben Barba. Both are premiership winners.

End of the day as we saw yesterday when you help your team score 50, you don't need to be the best defensive fullback in the game.

Hopefully Dufty cements his position at full back as for Mann he has the ability to cement his position somewhere in the back line . Now as for Field he was targeted as Duges replacement by our recruitment officer , he might still get his chance there but for me Dufty is a fullback , where they are trying to turn Field into one .

On Slayter/ he was in the light side when he started. Did not have a passing or kicking game . Cronk made a comment about that during his first Fox sports commentary gig. Dufty looks ready to me and was not overawed by his FG debut.

Lots of guys bagging duftys defensive side.hes not Brad Mackay ,that's for sure but he's every bit as good as Billy Slater was when he first started.so why don't some of you (experts) let the boy learn his trade.at the moment he's an apprentice.but boy in the future how good could he be.even Cooper Cronk agrees.

Fullback is the last line of defense.

If he can contribute to scoring points (as he did tremendously well yesterday) then, like yesterday we are better off.
