Dugan to return for NRL finals-or-bust battle after punishment

Tim Barrow@@TheBarrow

28 Aug 2017, 12:23 p.m.

Josh Dugan is expected to be included in the St George Illawarra lineup for the finals-or-bust showdown with Canterbury on Sunday.

However, his NSW representative career appears to be in tatters, regardless of who takes over from Laurie Daley as coach next year.

Dugan was sensationally stood down in the hours before their victory over Penrith, having missed the team bus. But after discussions while celebrating their potentially season-saving win over the Panthers and an apology from Dugan to the players, he is set to gain a reprieve, when the team is named on Tuesday afternoon.

“He’s done his punishment now,” coach Paul McGregor told Fox Sports. “He’s missed a game of footy, he’ll be hurting pretty hard, letting the players down. He’s a world class player, isn’t he.”

Dugan, bound for Cronulla next year, shifted from fullback to the centres following Matt Dufty’s emergence as a future NRL star.

Winger Jason Nightingale told Fairfax "there's been a little bit of ill-discipline creeping in at the place for the last four or five weeks”, leading to the decision to leave Dugan out on Sunday.

But it is understood key NSW officials hold a dim view of the behaviour of Dugan and Blues teammate Blake Ferguson during this year’s Origin series.

NSW are again searching for answers after losing the decider 22-6, their 11 series defeat in 12 years.

There is only one scenario which would see St George Illawarra still miss out on finals, even if they overpower the Bulldogs on Sunday.

After losing to the Dragons, Penrith now play Manly on Saturday, with the lose elimination from the playoffs equation.

But a golden point draw would see them both pick up a competition point, meaning they each finish on 31 points, out of the Dragons’ reach. Adding to the final-round drama the Dragons would only miss out if injury North Queensland beat Brisbane on Thursday night.

If the Cowboys lose, St George Illawarra just need to win.

Why the Dragons dumped Josh Dugan from crucial NRL clash
PAUL CRAWLEY, The Daily Telegraph
August 28, 2017 11:21am
PAUL McGregor had no choice but to dump Josh Dugan after revelations the St George Illawarra star missed the plane home from Brisbane the previous week.

McGregor has come under fire from some sections for his tough stance on Sunday ahead of a crucial game against Penrith that could have denied the Dragons a shot at playing finals football.

But The Daily Telegraph can reveal that McGregor made the decision after consultation with the senior playing group following an incident in Brisbane the previous week.

It can be revealed that Dugan did not return home with the rest of the squad following the loss to the Broncos in round 24.

b4edd500f45558e3753d97f9e2fe3c93

Josh Dugan was dumped after back-to-back incidents.
Dugan was then a no-show when the Dragons’ bus was due to leave Sutherland on Sunday.

The Dragons’ bus was due to leave at 1pm. The club attempted to contact Dugan but ultimately had to decide to go to the game without him.

McGregor spoke to his senior players who agreed that Dugan had to pay the price and be stood down for the match against the Panthers.

McGregor was coy after the game and denied that the axing followed a previous incident.

But The Daily Telegraph has since discovered missing the flight home from Brisbane had left the coach and the senior players furious.

It meant that they arrived at Penrith’s Pepper Stadium later than scheduled and were basically forced to play with 16 men.

McGregor will have to make a decision on Tuesday as to whether he brings Dugan back for Sunday’s final round game against Canterbury.

In Dugan’s absence Kurt Mann was forced to switch to right centre with Josh McCrone taking Mann’s spot at halfback.

The Dragons will again be fighting for their season when they take on the Bulldogs.

A win over the Bulldogs will all but guarantee the Dragons a top-eight finish.

Matthew Dufty, Paul Vaughan and Gareth Widdop celebrate full time at Pepper Stadium.
The only possible way the Dragons can drop out is if the Sea Eagles and Panthers draw and the Cowboys beat the Broncos.

If Dugan is overlooked he might have played his last game for the Dragons given he is joining Cronulla next year.

The Dragons could be forgiven for thinking they made the right choice not to match the Sharks’ four-year deal offered to Dugan.

Dugan was also at the centre of an incident leading up to the State of Origin decider when he went off drinking with Blake Ferguson in the build up to the game.

Laurie Daley has since paid the price for the Blues’ failed campaign.

That's shithouse Samy.

In isolation it's nothing, but things are starting to rack up.

AS I said earlier its the 3rd time .
First time he turned up late for training ( he was given the benifit of the doubt)
The other two were missing the plane back from brisbane.
And yesterday.
The people who told me is very reliable sauce and is a current players.
So I think mary and the senior players did the right thing.
But mybe with hindsight it should have been done earlier.
I think that if duges plays this week he will have a big games.
I'm sure he's wants to make up for it.

I think it's easy in hindsight to say that they should have done something earlier, but if what you're saying is true, I'd say that the club has probably got it spot on.

Once could be an accident, twice is a warning. Third time is a trend.

I think the decision on whether to welcome him back this round should come down to what the mood is in the squad. If his actions are causing a rift I'd say let him go for the year.

Hi SBD82
Just for old time sake.
He might have not caught the plane with the team but that doesn't mean to say he missed it.
The way Mc Gregor spoke yesterday's event was strike 1 so maybe he had someone's permission re the plane ride.
Late for training once all year hardly hanging offence but need to see the full body of evidence I would suggest.

Re origin camp who is the FW who put him and Ferguson as roomies?
FMD Daly and his lot are prime wankers for even considering it.
Interesting the so called 8 hour SOO binge drinking session all petered out to nothing but now it is back in the news as a boozathon.

The press are horrendous for painting everything in black.

Mate I don't think it's defendable anymore. I've learned to listen when Samy says something.

Your excuse for the Brisbane flight is drawing a long bow. If he had permission it would have been a non issue.

It all seems as though the club (and origin) gave him the benefit of the doubt, and he's thrown it back in their faces.

I don't want to see him tried via the media, but if he has alienated his teammates I don't think there's any point bringing him back into the team.

As I say Mc Gregor firmly states only 1 offence and that was yesterday so is the coach a liar?
If all is correct in respect of continual misbehaviour I would punt him and also Mc Gregor for covering it all up.

That's exactly what I think mcgregor is doing, but I'd actually give mcgregor credit for this one.

Whenever I've had to discipline someone I do it with a united face to the public, and then absolutely hammer them behind closed doors. It's the best way to sort things out.

And as I said before, it doesn't have to be continual. If what Samy said is true, it's actually been handled well. Once is an accident. Twice you draw the line. Third time you act.

Were you aware of the issue re the plane?
To all concerned with my position on this subject thus far.
  1. Prior to my post I had not seen any press releases re Dugan doing anything untoward in his behaviour at St GI.
  2. On the basis that the playing group and the coaching staff saw fit to keep picking him and there was no evidence that the club had disciplined him for anything, one would rightfully be entitled to think all is good with Dugan albeit he is known to be a dope re social media.
  3. If he is a c**k head and it is proven that he has multiple issues that have been swept under the carpet and masked over then I lose all respect for him and even more so the club as people should be able to formulate opinions on the evidence at hand and if they have withheld that evidence then the club is complicit.
  4. In respect of a request for me to apologise for my original position or my response to others there is no chance as my position was formulated on the facts on hand at the time and I would similarly come to the same conclusion again based on those facts.
  5. However if there are real untoward matters and they now come to light then I would dump him and all the people who covered anything up and the club should compensate the merchandise people who give refunds to any people who feel aggrieved at buying Dugan merchandise under false pretences.
  6. Last but not least how the hell is it that several issues are now potentially going to come to surface when nothing was in the news before?
I hope that this is not as bad as it appears but if it is I will be shattered for trusting my club to do the right thing and be honest with the fans.
Very dramatic.

There is a lot of commentary about this Josh Dugan matter. I suppose none of us will know all the ins and outs of apparent poor discipline.

My issue with Josh for the past few years on this forum is that he has never risen to the heights of an elite player despite being on huge coin for 4seasons under our cap. He was a prodigious talent early in his Raiders time. He never showed that same level at the Dragons.

His 1st game for us against the then lowly placed Parramatta at the gong was a pearler scoring two trys. One beautiful long line break on his 1st touch. After that game he seemed to settle into a hard running and capable defending fullback. Occasionally made a good line break but quickly reeled in due to his lack of high end speed.

In fairness his body shape changed from long and lean with better speed to a bulkier version with less agility at the Dragons.

These days he can still produce the occasional something classy like a great attacking catch or half break and round the corner pass. However, generally he is handled comfortably by opposition teams. Biggest problem is that lack of high end speed which slows our backline sweeps. Check Dufty with speed against the panthers when he scored.

This season Josh started well but has fallen away and has suffered injury. I don't believe the Dogs care whether he plays or not. I think they hope he does as Josh Morris is very quick and found some form, capable of burning Duges.

Old Timer's been on Dugan's side all year and now he needs to go on the defensive in the face of overwhelming evidence.
I don't know why people are so stubborn. I am happy to admit when I am wrong if I feel I am wrong.
I have semi-defended Macdonald until last game but after watching sundays game I thought Nope this guys not who I hoped he was! And I change my mind and come around to admit I was wrong about him. Others like OT will never admit that they were wrong about anything. I don't get that behavior.

Media report suggests Duges apologised to the team after the game.

If true, in my view he should be considered for selection.

He will see the Bulldogs game as the opportunity to redeem himself.

Option 1) Duges to right centre, Mann to half.

Option 2) Mann to 7, McDonald to right centre, FFL to right wing.

I prefer option 1 if Duges was sincere in apologising to the team.

Josh Dugan hasn’t only missed the bus — he’s missed the point, as Blues and Dragons ready to say goodbye
Paul Kent, The Daily Telegraph
August 28, 2017 7:10pm
JOSH Dugan picked a bad weekend not to get on the bus. Might be time to make a new plan, Stan.

He lost the faith of his St George Illawarra teammates and jeopardised his chance to play in the finals. More — and with less publicity — he severely damaged his chances to play for NSW again.

Tolerance has nearly expired for Dugan, a wonderfully talented but, ultimately, flawed player.

It was the second time in 48 hours his attitude was questioned.

DISCIPLINED: Why Dragons dumped Dugan

The season has slipped away as Dugan’s focus has faded. (Ashley Feder/Getty Images)
Two days earlier, NSW coach Laurie Daley got told he was not going to be reappointed as Blues coach and Dugan had as much to play in that as anybody.

Daley was set to be reappointed before the NSW Rugby League board underwent a second review, broadening the interviews beyond the coach and chief executive, Dave Trodden.

Andrew Farrar (manager) and John Cartwright (assistant) and others were interviewed and once they were done the sentiment was Daley had overseen a culture where the result ran second to the drinking culture.

A healthy part of the concern was Dugan’s decision, along with teammate Blake Ferguson, to spend the Friday afternoon on the drink when Daley gave the team the day off. They admitted being there about eight hours but insist they weren’t drunk.

Pause for laughter.

It emerged in the review that Daley did not know of the drink until the Thursday, the day after the Origin game, which prompted a simple question from the board of why didn’t he know?

The Queenslanders giggled themselves hoarse over the Blues’ binge drink, for what it said about the team and where they were at.

Johnathan Thurston spoke of it on the Triple M Saturday NRL Show.

“With that trust, it’s a mutual respect between the coaching staff and the players,’’ he said. “That’s the difference in the culture, I believe, is that when the coaching staff give you those days off you do it in the right way and in the right manner.

“Some of the boys will go and play golf, some of the boys go sit at a cafe but certainly we’re not on the piss five days out from a game.”

It told Queensland all they needed to know. The NSWRL board, too.

The NSWRL board lost all appetite for Dugan and his offsider, Blake Ferguson, to be part of any NSW squad in the future after completing their review.

Two other players are also pushing uphill for next year’s series.

The board know enough to know selection will begin and end with the new coach when he is finally appointed but the coach will also go into the series knowing if he defies the board and who they believe are at the centre of the team’s cultural issues, and lose, their tenure will be short.

Culture is hard to define because it means different things to different people. It is basically the standard of behaviour you are willing to accept.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor is trying to build a strong club with certain accountabilities.

It is a team-first mentality. An idea considered so important it is why Origin camps and clubs out of form still have bonding sessions to develop ties between teammates.

Dugan, whose business is rugby league, missed the bus to the game on Sunday. His sole job for the week.

It came a week after he missed the team plane home from Brisbane after their round 24 loss to the Broncos.

Dragons' finals hopes alive
On Monday, he denied missing the plane, even as club insiders defended McGregor’s decision to drop him from the Penrith game by confirming he missed the plane before he missed the bus.

So why the lie? How can a coach improve his team if his most senior player won’t accept responsibility?

Dugan was in dispute with the Dragons this year because the recruitment boss Ian Millward refused to raise his contract to $1 million a season.

The Dragons instead dropped their offer from the $800,000 he is on to $700,000, telling him he was being considered as a centre. That was the polite way of telling him he was not worth the money he was asking.

Can Cronulla get the best out of Dugan? Photo: Brett Costello
Dugan countered in May, weeks before Origin.

“I’m not being greedy,” he said. “I’m going for what I feel I’m worth as a world-class player.”

Three weeks later, Dugan signed with Cronulla, saying coach Shane Flanagan whispered words of honey in his ears.

“I’ve gone as a world-class player,” Dugan said.

“That’s what Flanno’s told me. That’s all I wanted at the start — to be branded as that rather than a certain position.”

That’s what was important to him. The fluff of fame, not the substance, and good luck with that.
