The nbn isnt a taxpayer funded project

The $35 BN will not go into any other project if the nbn was stopped

The Nbn is to make money for the government

The relevance the nbn would have for rugy league is streaming online and other online stuff

Based on the NBN business plan the Govts best estimate is a 7% rate of return.

Then you need people to buy it with most neutral commentators saying it will be a round $150 - $200 a month. Thats a lot for mums and dads.

Thats probably for the highest speed 100mbps or what ever

the lower speeds would be similar to what people are paying now

No NBN is fine but considering the US is not going 'cable' nor are many other 1st world nations and the speed of wireless technology is basically closing fast, then why spend $45 billion when the boss of Telstra and other leadiong experts says you can do that for 10.

I dont disagree with an NBN so the thread title is probably inaccurate and I poted before I could change it.

I guess the point I'm trying to make (and probably did it badly) is that federal funding for sport needs to be looked at considering that as a % of total budget it has decreased every year bar one since 2000. I guess that means both political parties are to blame.

So in reference to the NBN, by the time we've built it there is a good chance that wireless technology will be as fast if not faster meaning that we would have spend $45bn vs around $10. Then of course there's the cable upkeep in the years to come.

Essentially then, less dollars wasted is more dollars that can be used more wisely.

The idea itself is great but cable is the senseless / waste of money part.

You mean the speeds close to what we have now thus making a NBN useless.

This is a little tongue in cheek....but considering the Federal Government is so good at spending our money wouldn't it be good if they could dump or better manage some of their useless and failing projects and set aside set even 1 billion dollars (a fraction of the total federal Budget) and further support Australian sporting codes.

Nah, it would never happen but consideing every other numbskull policy gets a guernsey its probably worth a shot isn't it?

Maybe we should take it to Prime Minister Bob Brown and tell him as part of the package every supporter gets a tree!

the government manages to waste money on sport just as well as on other things.

For example, at least $12.5 million has been spent opening a training facility for Australian Athletes - in Italy!!

The lowest speed on the nbn is 12mbps

not many people can get that on adsl2+

The way nbn will work it will be completely different to the way, what we are using now on copper

it is different technology

Do you understand that the lowest speeds on the currently available NBN plans are already faster than any ADSL plans in the country and faster than all but the most expensive cable plans?
Do you also understand that the NBN end user speeds are the most insignificant part of the entire project?

Anyone suggesting that wireless is a serious alternative to the FTTP network has, in the nicest way possible, got nfi.

Wireless may get upgraded but so will the FTTP network, difference being that the theoretical limit on fibre optic is the speed of light…

Lowest speed I’ve seen was 25mb. Who’s offering 12mb?

I haven’t suggested wireless as an alternative.

The correct alternative is private enterprise just like our current 3G mobiles network. Of course we can’t do that because we “NEED” the NBN for “education” purposes.... sorry I mean so 15 year olds can download porn quicker.

You have a point here but at the rate the gap is closing can anyone say fior sure that wirelsss will not one day soon be capable of matching fibre optic speeds. Theoretical limits are not a good argument because a rocket could tarvel at the speed of light in theory also.

Education needs this because the majority of primary schools in Queensland have 512kb or 1.5mb speeds for the entire school+admin, high schools aren’t much better. Do some research and stop using geniused strawman bullsh*t to cover your arse.

Well upgrade to ADSL2.

The fact is we don’t need an NBN.
