while i don't think he'll drop dureau while he's doing well.. we did see last year what the week to week grind in first grade can do to a young half. walshy started well but as the year went by he really tapered off. i would suspect smith is going to try and combat this by rotating as necessary. i very strongly doubt dureau will be dropped this week after the performance he turned in - you don't drop players who are in form and winning you matches.

This sort of propoganda sh*ts me.

The Newcastle Herald is already a public mouthpiece for all things positive for the Knights, and now Smith the " fake motivation King " decides to use the Herald for his stupid mind game propoganda to supposedly motivate the players.

It is as obvious as day what Smith is trying to do - and its wrong.

What coach talks about dropping their halfback after winning the game in OT and playing so strong throughout - a f*cked up in the head one thats who

Here we go again...
I don't think it's going to bother Scotty - he has been number 2 choice halfback since 2003 and every time they chuck him the jersey he makes every post a winner.
My only explanation is that Luke Walsh's mum washed the jerseys and they couldn't afford to piss her off.

Smith is a good coach, but I get the feeling he's not mentally stable.
LOL funny you say that. Quite a while ago a guy I know told me about Smithy (he has family ties to Smith) and he said "he is one very strange individual" he didn't elaborate much, but he did say some of the players at the Eels just didn't know how to take him at all.

Yeah he is a weirdo because his form of motivation is by playing off team mates against each other in some sort of weird competition.

He has never been at a club where you could say the team spirit has been exceptional.

And thats one thing the Knights always had - a great spirit and closeness amongst the team. Hopefully he doesn't turn us into the uptight bunch that was the Parramatta Eels under his care.

been coached by smith now have you? how on earth would you know what his actual methods are? fair dinkum you must lap up every single word the telegraph has to say about him. there's no doubt he gets certain players offside, and when that happens they tend to sh*tbag him to the press.. but fair dinkum i would have thought you would have learned a bit about jumping to short conclusions around here by now.

i do agree that smith is bizarre though... but i would say team spirit is pretty high at the knights at the moment... they're certainly playing like it is, and over the years i've seen some extremely spirited smith-coached teams.

We bagged Hagan mercilessly for years for NOT making the players think their positions weren't guarenteed, so i don't think many of us are in a position to bag Smith for doing the opposite.

i'm certainly not roops. i'm stoked we're in a position that players have to earn their right to play first grade.

Although surely a bloke who did nothing wrong, set up a try with a deft short ball and showed maturity beyond his years to kick the field goal deserves to be there this week.

and he probably will be - but he now knows he needs to keep playing well - and Bailey knows if he keeps up the good form he is going to get the nod eventually.

.. and i daresay he will be. if he drops him - then we have something to complain about. until then, it's just an article saying that smith wont be playing the same halves combination all year - at a guess i would say it is for the reasons i mentioned in an earlier post - to ease these young guys into it. no-one but smith would know for sure what is going on, but we can hardly criticize smith on something that he hasn't yet done.

beat me to it roopy - but yes you just highlighted another very apt point - this also shows walsh and bailey in the lower grades that they're not out of the equation at all yet.

Because I've seen with my own eyes the text messages he sends players

I find it hard to understand why anyone would question Smith's techniques for managing his squad throughout a season. His premiership winning record may not be good, but he's won 2 minor premierships, reached 3 grand finals, and turned clubs that were in the doldrums into perennial semi-finalists with these approaches. Given the talent at his disposal it's been the most impressive week-to-week performance of any coach in the current era imho.

I don't recall any smokescreens or left-field selections in the finals--maybe that's been the problem! lol.
