Six games is certainly too small a sample, but Arthur didn't just win a third of our games; he won a third of our games without Jarryd Hayne.

Previous coaches have fared thusly:
Stuart: 1/9
Arthur: 2/6
Kearney: 1/9
Anderson: 0/4
Hagan: 5/8

Hayne played in every game coached by Taylor in 2006. And obviously Hayne didn't become a key member of the team until Hagan's final handful of games.

Bring back Hagan!!

If we can't get someone like Bennett (which is a pipe dream) I'd take Arthur, Parish or Taylor.

Holding pattern

Steve Folkes and Peter Sharp are the latest names linked to Parramatta's newly created position of general manager of football after Eels chairman Steve Sharp ruled out Brian Smith. While Ricky Stuart's departure for Canberra took the Eels by surprise, Parramatta officials now view it as an opportunity to ''modernise'' their football operations and are looking to AFL clubs for ideas. New chief executive Scott Seward previously worked with the Western Bulldogs and he is expected to play a key role in revamping the Eels.

The idea of a general manager of football is not new in league but almost every AFL club has someone of high calibre, for example Rodney Eade at Collingwood, who sits above the coach. Parramatta officials feel a general manager of football would be better suited to overseeing development, recruitment and long-term strategy than a coach, whose job is results-driven. Seward also previously worked with Folkes at Canterbury, while some at the Eels believe Sharp's experience at Newcastle, Manly, Melbourne, Parramatta and Cronulla make him ideal for the role. He also has a good relationship with Sharks mentor Shane Flanagan, who may become a target for the coaching job after John Cartwright rejected an offer said to be more than twice what he is on at the Titans and Neil Henry ruled himself out.

Jason Taylor, Rick Stone and Brad Arthur, who is believed to have spoken with several directors, are thought to be the leading contenders, although it is unclear how official some of the approaches to potential candidates, including Cartwright, are. Seward, who officially started in his new role on Wednesday, will be involved in appointing the coach and general manager of football, and the Eels say they won't rush either decision. But key members of the coaching staff remain in limbo and some, such as NSW assistant Matt Parish, have been approached to join Stuart in Canberra but need to let him know soon.

That's a very good point. As long as we've got some merkin overseeing our strategy we can sack all the coaches we want.

We should start advertising for a professional scapegoat. Hell we could even bring in Jason Taylor and make all the fans happy.

So it looks like our senior players have demanded another rookie coach.

PARRAMATTA'S senior players have fronted the club's board asking that a rookie coach - similar to the Roosters' Trent Robinson and South Sydney's Michael Maguire - take over the Eels next season.

"We would prefer a junior coach — a bloke that is looking for his first crack," Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne said.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Hayne, Tim Mannah, Fuifui Moimoi, Willie Tonga and Mitchell Allgood have spoken to the board about Ricky Stuart’s replacement.

And the players want to gamble on a young coach, which would seemingly rule out any possible return of Brian Smith or the appointment of Neil Henry.

"We (senior players) are the core of the club," Hayne told The Daily Telegraph in Cairns, where he is preparing for the Prime Minister’s XIII match in PNG on Sunday.

"I think we need our opinion heard. We have a few ideas we have spoken to the board about.

"I think it is important to get the senior players' opinions. The board has been really supportive and awesome.

"We have spoken together as a unit to nail down the right coach. It is probably the first time we have gone in and spoke about something."

Hayne admitted the players threw forward several names.

"Yeah, I threw up some names but I will keep that confidential," Hayne said.

"It is up to the board to make a decision that is best suited to the club."

"... We have spoken about it in detail. That’s our preference (a rookie coach). We’ll see what happens."

Hayne refused to fire a shot at departed coach Stuart.

"He has made his decision and life goes on," Hayne said.

Can certainly see the logic in it. The only experienced coaches available all have a recent history of failure. And while a rookie represents a risk, we're actually in a position where we have nothing to lose.

F*ck off Jarryd. That worked with Kearney didn't it. Sign Taylor, sign an experienced coaching director (I wouldn't mind Folkes) and lets start prepping for 2014

Taylor is as much a rookie as most. He had a few years at Souths and they even had to appoint a coaching director to hold his hand.

I see more value from an up and coming coach who isn't appointed by our major sponsor than a bloke who continues to be looked over for head coaching roles since he got the arse from Souths four years ago.

The players are the ones who have to work with them and it's obvious that the coaches we have had since Smith have struggled to work with them. Input from the players is important and could go a long way to making it work. Roosters players were keen to see Robinson back at the club despite having the 'great white hope' in Taylor already working at the club.
