Mate even thinking about signing this fossil is a worry.

This is the bloke who replaced Prince with Morris at 7.

Let Fafita go to pay huge money for Blair, take out his record at a raiders side a blind monkey could have coached and his record is terrible for a long term coach. Remember him at a struggling club like the cowboys??

We are in that same boat he would be an absolute disaster.

Smith as head of coaching and JT and Arthur's are our best bet IMO.
At least Smith has a great record as a club builder.

If you take out, from any coach's record (barring Gibson, Bennett etc), the years in which they had their strongest team, they will typically look pretty ordinary. I don't know if you remember the state of the Panthers team where he started his coaching career...he took them to their first ever finals appearance. When he took over the Raiders they were far from the finished product (though they had made the GF the year before). It's easy to say that anyone could have coached the Raiders......sorry I just don't buy that.

Hindsight is 20/20.

Does the fact that parish hasn't moved mean he is still in the running, or at least that the candidate(s) is/are someone he is happy to work with?

Could also mean that he is the only coach we have on contract and we're not letting the merkin go.

Every other club now has their head coach sorted, and all the best assistants are being signed up.

With assistant coaches doing all the technical work, they are extremely important in the modern game and I'd say we're hanging onto Parish because we need him, he knows the players, and we're unlikely to get anyone better when we finally get around to filling out our coaching staff.

from the article...
But current Eels players fronted board members a fortnight ago to petition for their old caretaker coach Arthur, who took over for the final six games of 2012 after Steve Kearney’s sacking.

It’s understood both Arthur and Taylor would be comfortable working under Smith should they get the job. The Eels still have to hire assistant staff as well as a new under-20s coach.
i thought brian smith was out of the running for coaching director (or whatever it will be called).

if sheens does get the overseeing role i would be happy with that. at the piegers he seemed to be able to bring through and retain plenty of junior talent. i'd prefer brian smith in that role but right now i just want the club to sort stuff out so the squad (that isn't playing in the world cup) are ready to start pre-season in a few weeks.

I don't get the Sheens hate. He's the current Kangaroos coach. The players respect him.

It's only a coaching Director FFS. He works with Nolan, NRL coach, NYC coach, Reggies coach and puts long term structures in place. Once he's done his job we'll f**k him off.

Let's face it, Smith or Sheens are required because our club has lost focus over the past decade. It needs to be fixed and these guys know their stuff.

With a CD being here, it also provides an opportunity for an Arthur or Taylor to earn their stripes as a rookie under the tutelage of an experienced CD. It's a win/win and far better than, say, the Titans at the moment who has Carty on a long term deal with now Henry breathing down his neck. (That's just asking for trouble.)

Either Sheens or Smith would be great in the director role, both have solid backgrounds in bringing young players through

Sheens set up and maintained the Keebra Park set up in Qld, Smith was responsible for the JETS scheme that was successful in bringing Cayless, Vella , Hindmarsh etc to the NRL. Perhaps the NRL has moved past them , but they would be invaluable with a younger strong minded coach , and Arthur and Taylor would both be that

All we need to do is now bring Joe Grima back as full time NYC coach and asst in NRL, that would be happy days :)

Sheens would be a complete and utter disaster as a coaching director. His record of bringing through players and recruiting talent was diabolical in his later years at the Tigers.

Why not bring in Sheens and McNamara together? Then when you count Kearney we would've had the ungodly trinity of hopeless international coaches.

I hope that Parra sign Sheens simply so the old merkin is off our books.

In all seriousness though, it could go two ways: you might inherit the 2003 Tim Sheens who developed a great side with talented kids and experienced solid first graders or you might get 2012 Sheens who recruited poorly, made some poor retention decisions and when it went to shit refused to appropriate the blame correctly (at himself,) and refused to walk.

If the latter shows up, Parra could well be in for some dark days.

Sheens or Smith will be Coaching Director not NRL coach, get a grip

I know you meant that neither Smith or Sheens would be NRL Head Coach, however it doesn't mean that one of them will definitely get the CD gig does it Delboy?

What does a coaching director do? Recruitment and Youth Development.

What does Tim Sheens fail at? Recruitment and Youth Development.

Sounds like a brilliant appointment.

The list is probably long as well Pou!
Sheens is good on the whole 'setting up of a club' thing. He might not be the best in the business, but he's far from the worst.
The game day coaching thing seems to be a bit much for him these days - so coaching director would be PERFECT for him I guess.

Could be worse blokes to throw into that position anyway. Personally I don't want Sheens at the club (definitely not as head coach) - but it wouldn't be the depths of despair if he was coaching director would it?

Opinions on Kearney.

Yep I'm the same. He assisted a coach who's club cheated for a decade. Then rode the coat tails of Benny with the NZ side.

Massive gamble IMO.
This forum really does bring a lot of glass half empty opinions, this bloke iis useless, he can't do this.

You know that this was said when Brian Smith was hired , Steve Kearney appears to be a strong willed individual who will impose some decent discipline and structure which was sadly missing in 2009.

And we all know what Poupou thinks of Kearney.

At least Gronk got it right tbf.
