Eels backline the hottest in NRL: Finch

Wednesday, August 8, 2007
http://svc002.wic110cx.server-web.com/News/Latest/NewsArticle/tabid/76/NewsId/6527/Default.aspx Parramatta five-eighth Brett Finch has labelled the Eels backline the most talented and entertaining in the NRL ahead of Saturday night's home clash against Cronulla.
The third-placed Eels have produced some of the most scintillating football of the year in their pursuit of a first premiership in 21 years.
The side has suffered from inconsistency at times, but when on song Jarryd Hayne, Timana Tahu, Krisnan Inu, Eric Grothe and Ben Smith have proved near unstoppable.
"I would say talent wise and for entertainment value it is probably the best in the competition," Finch said.
"But again you have a Melbourne team who can be entertaining but also grind out a tough win as well.
"We know on our day we have a pretty impressive backline."
The frightening prospect for their opponents is they still have to find room for fullback Luke Burt, who is expected to return from injury later this month.
Parramatta's 34-22 win over the Bulldogs last weekend provided further evidence they were a genuine premiership threat and Finch believed the return of captain Nathan Cayless made them a much better side.
The Kiwi front-rower has spent the last two weeks on leave following the death of his mother.
"He has probably been our best player this year. I think without him we can win games but he is probably our key to going all the way," Finch said.
"He is our best player, he is our leader and with Nathan Hindmarsh he does so much work in the middle of the ruck that goes unnoticed, so he is a massive return for us.
"I think if he played against Manly we would have won that game.
"I think where we have been criticised for going through some flat periods Nathan has been the one who keeps the intensity up in that middle third.
"I think he has enjoyed being back with the boys as have we enjoyed having him back."
Finch, who played in two losing grand finals with the Roosters in 2003 and 2004, felt the Eels had a great opportunity to reach their first premiership decider since 2001.
"We have a month to go until the real stuff heats up," he said.
"I have played a few grand finals and lost and I certainly realise the importance that you don't get too many cracks at it and we have put ourselves in a good position to give it a good crack and they don't come every year, you have to make the most of them."
Following the Sharks, the Eels have the chance to measure themselves against the competition's benchmark with a trip to Melbourne to play the pace-setting Storm before rounding out the season against St George Illawarra (WIN Stadium) and Brisbane (Parramatta Stadium).

Hindmarsh is in RLW professing pretty much the same thing. I see they're a modest bunch out Parra way

Melbournes full strength backline is far better. Not to mention far more consistent. I cant remember more than a handful of really good games Parramatta has played this season. Tigers on monday night was one, and maybe one or two others. They are still a mile off the pace of Melbourne and Manly.

And more importantly, any backline that contains brett finch is neither the most entertaining or most talented.

excluding the five-eighth i'd assume finchy ;-)

i just love the expectations people are starting to put on parra...we seen it happen in 2001 and 2005 and look what came out of it...

I think Finch was more talking of the outside backs and at the moment, Parra are playing much better than Melbourne so we might see a classic Parra v Manly GF.

Potentially we have the best backline in the NRL, but potential is just that. But if we can put it together for 80 mins we will be hard to hold out.

Backline tries in 2007:

Melbourne 68
Cowboys 61
Canterbury 55
Manly 54
Warriors 52
Penrith 51
Dragons 49
Parramatta 48
Titans 47
Cronulla 45
Brisbane 45
Newcastle 43
Roosters 42
Souths 39
Tigers 39

Sourced from RLW. They also have Canterbury on 44 so there's obviously a misprint. I put them on the higher one for you Timmah

Depends what he is talking about. If he is talking about outside backs- centres/wingers, fullbacks then he might have a case.

I remember back in 2001 where they had the best team by far on the park and were completely unstoppable. Newcastle weren't going to come within cooee of them that Sunday night, apparently.

My Centrebet account was very happy that most people believed the hype and pushed the odds up.

Apparently the Raiders backs haven't scored a try all year. For the record they've scored 55.

Not according to RLW they haven't

I dare say they put the Dogs name in place of Canberra's so one is on 55 the other is on 44.

I reckon its the raiders that have 55. They have put on a lot of tries through their backline. The Dog have actually scored 1 point less than the Raiders in 2007 so far.

If its purely outside backs I'd have trouble arguing with him.

1. Burt
2. Grothe
3. Inu
4. Tahu
5. Hayne

1. Slater
2. Geyer
3. King
4. Falau
5. Turner

Personally I think I'd prefer the Eels.

Then again:

1. Hodgson
2. Tuiaki
3. Collis
4. Whatiura
5. Lawerance

Would certainly give them a run for their money ;-)

Mojo you have no idea have you.
Newcastle had the best team, A.Johns was out for a good period that year.
Parra broke a lot of records but let me remind you Newcastle beat Parra convincingly that year down in newcastle with Johns playing. It was reversed when he was out in the return game at Parra.

So many times I have heard how Parra had the better team, what absolute garbage.
Knights had the experience and the better side, parra were a youthful bunch who did A LOT more than anyone thought at the begining of that year

parramatta dominanted the entire f**king year what the hell are you on about? parramatta were probably the shortest priced favourites of all time. looking back newcastle had a great team that year but parra just f**ked everyone in the arse until that sunday night
