Defence is not a discipline generally associated with the under 20's competition as a rule. Hence why they need to focus on an Under 23's or a true reserve grade competition.

An often used statement but to improve it has to start with good defence. Regretably that requirement isnt anywhere to be found at our club no matter where one looks.
Is this were we expected Dean Pay to excell?

Well mate if you have a look at the competition as a whole, defense seems to be missing at every club... Seriously is a dud comp, certainly not a true indication of a second tier comp.

This.

But the wage bill would be a lot higher than it is now.

Yes and no.

In the past many of our under 20's players have come under the Top 25 Salary Cap. Mitchell, O'Hanlon and a couple of others. Pritchard, Tanginoa, Pauli and Paulo would do now and before this season.

Most clubs can comfortably afford three grades and could do under reciprocal deals with some NSW Cup clubs.

It would strengthen the refereeing ranks too. Right now they are poo.

The worst thing about it is that they pretty much have a reserve grade comp ready to go, they just have to implement it.

Don't have "Parramatta" reserve grade, have "Wentworthville" as the club who plays in the reserve grade comp for us. They get supported by Wenty, but the Eels control the football operations.

Rinse and repeat for all clubs.

The thing is, for it to be a genuine reserve grade comp, every player needs to be training fulltime. At the moment (and this late in the season) some NSW Cup sides only have a handful of fulltime (i.e. NRL contracted) players.

This entails bigger squads and a higher minimum salary (as in, the minimum salary covering every player, not just some arbitrary 'top 25' which doesn't come close to covering the number of players used in a typical season).

But the extra money for all these reserve graders has to come out of the wage budget currently gobbled up by the game's stars. And those greedy merkins want to suck every bit of marrow from any future salary cap increase, which is why they all have percentage-increase-clauses.

I wouldn't agree with that Pou (re: cash).

Those blokes who play NSW or QLD cup are going to play it anyway. By bringing both comps together to 16 teams, you effectively make a stronger comp by keeping the strongest players around.

Wouldn't have to cost anyone any extra cash, except on the travel side of things. Sure, you wouldn't have everyone training full-time, but that's acceptable. NYC don't "train fulltime" either, they're supposed to be off getting some kind of traineeship aren't they?

I also think the stars rightly get paid high %'s of the cap. They're the guys who market the game on the field. Nobody cares if Ben Pomeroy is a decent centre, if you had a team full of those types of blokes you'd win footy games, but nobody would be queuing up to watch it on TV (the big revenue).

Without everyone training fulltime, the gap between the best reserve graders and the worst will be too big. This will impact on the quality of football played and therefore on the development of players in that competition.

Yeah and the standard of footy in the comp is shit.

Agreed. But this is why we don't have a decent second tier comp, and why there is a lack of depth in the game.

Special mention to Pauli Pauli & Joseph Ualesi who stood out in the stats in their 30-36 loss to Broncos.

3 tries to Pauli
1 try to Ualesi

158m to Pauli
171m to Ualesi

Ualesi is 21 next year so he'll definitely be in the fulltime squad. Pauli trained with them last pre-season as well, so he might be in next year's squad despite only turning 20 next year.

I'm looking forward to seeing these two in next years trials. Surely they will get a run.

Agree. Exciting for these boys and for the club considering they have been in the system since U14's.

Next trick is to keep the Bulldogs and Manly away from them.
