Eels in bid to slash costs

Business class has not really existed domestically for some time. The airlines will charge you more to sit up the front for 50 minutes or so, but that's about the only difference you'd notice. For international flights, there is a difference. What's that - 1 flight per year.

It's an announcement that will not be noticed in the balance sheet. One wet weather home game will do more damage to the books than business class flights.

We are seeing management discussing saving hundreds, in a budget of millions.

f**k me!!!!!! Who'd have thought that that is an idea???.... bloody hell, its only something that EVERY OTHER CLUB DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And something I would have thought we did just as much of (school visits, cahrities, hospitals, appearances) back in the 80s when players were part-time and had other jobs too, as we seem to do today when players are paid to be the club's full-time employees.

"It's not about the elections, we've got to do these things to remain viable," he said.

"We've had good times where we've been able to do things such as purchase assets in the Parramatta area and fall back on that. We need to look at all out costs across the board for the leagues clubs and the football clubs."

Eels board member Geoff Gerard said that it was time for Parramatta followers to come together to ensure the survival of their team.

"My message is to all Parramatta supporters - we need to get on the same boat here," Gerard said. "Whether they agree with some of the things we do as a board of directors or whether they agree with what Denis does, we need to do this together.

"If people have ideas to improve our revenue or help our club, please come forward - Nothing is out of the realms of possibility as an idea we could take on board. We're a proud club and we'll get through this."

Fitzgerald said that all contracts would be honoured, although players outside the top 25-man squad could have their salaries reduced in the future.
"We've got to take the necessary steps to ensure we survive and come out the other end when the world economy improves," he said. "We've all got to do our best, the board and the management, just like any other company in the headlines across the world.

"Hopefully there will be better circumstances for the club industry as well."

This is what i find amusing, IF THE FANS HAVE IDEAS PLEASE COME FORWARD BECAUSE WE DO NOT !!!

AHAHAHAHAHAHA TIME FOR A CHANGE IN MY BOOK MAKE April COUNT AND VOTE FOR A NEW LEADERSHIP NEW DIRECTION ...

He isn't, just his mates are typical wankers.

Todd is a good person but easily misled unfortunately, I don't care if people don't believe me on this but, if there was one thing i'm actually good at it's reading people, and being able to tell if they are genunine or a legit twat, Carney is a good person, but he grew up under pressure and his friends aren't exactly the cream of the crop, i cant say to much, but i think alcohol helps him deal with a few problems he has...

Nah dude, he's a genuine twat, always has been and I don't see him changing his ways. He's incapable of taking responsibility for himself and his actions

I think this is a good move by the board. I know it ain't rocket science, but it is the first indication they have given that they are working towards righting some wrongs of the past.
As I said elsewhere, it's a shame they have waited so long to use some counteractive measures, in fact, it's almost negligent, but at least we can now see that they are prepared to take alternative measures to improve the bottom line.
It's amazing though, how many of their points have been derived from what I would believe are the results of the reading of the report that Mits, Hellsy et al put together.

Eels rescue plan talks

BY ALISON MILLS AND ADRIAN PROSZENKO
11/03/2009 4:00:00 AM
WITH the 2009 rugby league season to start this weekend, and faced with a $7.8million loss for 2008, Parramatta Leagues Club chief executive Denis Fitzgerald has devised a rescue plan to keep the Eels on the paddock.

Mr Fitzgerald said he had put a 13-point plan to a meeting of the club's board on Friday night.

The plan included freezing all non-essential travel, minimising overnight accommodation for teams and management, and reducing grants from the leagues club to the football club from $5million to $4million, and maintaining the salary cap.

Mr Fitzgerald said the board had accepted part of the plan but would not say which part nor how much would be saved if the entire plan were implemented.

``We have looked at a number of figures and there is a fair bit of speculation and forecasting, so it is difficult to say,'' he said.

``About $4.5million will be coming back on the books.'' Mr Fitzgerald also said the club had recently exchanged contracts on several properties including the Two Blues Rugby Club and properties in Grose and Villiers streets, Parramatta, which would net about $6million.

This would go towards reducing the club's estimated $20million debt.
Mr Fitzgerald said the rescue plan had nothing to do with the club's board elections in April when he will be challenged for control by a contingent of former Eels headed by Terry Leadbeater.

If we are $20mil in debt as reported, and we are losing $7.8mil a year, then we're screwed, and must have been for some time...

The article obviously went to press with Denis quotes and a posed photo, so you'd think he might have had the opportunity to fact check it, concerning this debt figure.

That's something I don't think has been reported before... :sarcasm:

When I questioned Ovo about whether we owned Bakers Mews, he said yes.
When I asked him if we had borrowings against it, he also said yes.
I'd guess that they've borrowed a fair bit of money to not only develop that property, but also do the renovations at Vikings.
