Stat Attack: Eels' best start in 33 years

The last time Parramatta were in better shape than they are this year after six rounds, they won a premiership.

Not since 1986 – the most recent of Parramatta's four titles – have they won five or more of their opening six games. That year they won their first five straight games (following a round-one bye) to sit alone atop the NSWRL ladder after six rounds.

Since then they have won four of their first six games six times, including 2019, but on none of those occasions have they held a better points differential than the +52 they have earned on the back of Monday's huge win over Wests Tigers, according to NRL.com Stats.

With four other teams carrying a lofty 5-1 record through six rounds, the Eels sit fifth on the Telstra Premiership ladder, which is not necessarily their best position after six rounds in recent times. In 2016 they had a 4-2 record (with a +41 differential) to sit third after six weeks.

But a 4-2 record with +52 differential is their best since 1986.

Of course this is no sort of claim that the Eels are morals to add another premiership trophy to their cabinet – the Roosters and Storm remain the benchmark this year – and if anything it just underscores the Blue & Gold's struggles since their 1980s golden era came to a close.

Even in their best seasons in that time they have tended to start slowly. They famously came from a long way back in the 2009 charge to the grand final but in their 2005 minor premiership and even their dominant 2001 season they started with middling 3-3 records.

But after adding another wooden spoon in 2018 on the back of a horror 0-6 start to the year, the bright start to 2019 is a welcome relief for their long-suffering faithful.

It’s one hell of a season to pick to compare it with (86). It’s been a great start but comps aren’t won in April or May. Long way to go yet. Hopefully the contract sagas come to an end soon and the team has no reason to not remain focused.

Or heavy defeats
Of course. But if your two defeats are big enough to cancel out the positive f/a from your four wins those wins must've been tight. Tight wins usually involve a fair bit of luck, especially for teams that get flogged every three games.

That table is f**king embarrassing by the way.
It is. In the 34 seasons since 1985, in only seven of them have we won more than half of our first six games.

What is interesting is who the coaches were, as well as our final position on the ladder:

1986 (Monie) 1st
1989 (Monie) 9th
1993 (Cronin) 11th
2004 (Smith) 12th
2014 (Arthur) 10th
2016 (Arthur) 14th (but 8th on wins)
2019 (Arthur) 1st

So apart from 1986 and this year, the other five times we started well we didn't finish in the top four. We didn't even finish in the top eight, though in 2016 we had enough wins to.

Agree that comps aren’t won in April, however you need to be winning. If you look at last year’s ladder, the cut off for the 8 was 32 points.

Accordingly the Broncos and Knights will need to win 14 of the remaining 18 games just to make the semis. That’s quite a run.

Wasn’t last year a bit of an outlier with 32 points the cut off? Isn’t it usually 28?

...and arguably our best season in 2001 came from a 3-3 start. @Avenger would have been calling for Smithy’s head after Round 6.

So what you're saying is that Brad Arthurses is the greatest Eels coach ever?

Sign him up for eight years!!
