The club is finally being a bit ruthless and now merkins have a problem with that as well...

This is a much more preferable scenario to us spending like drunken sailors.

I also think the club playing hardball helps determine a player’s attitude and commitment.

If Gutho isn’t happy with what we have offered him then he should sign with Manly.
I agree, I have no problem with us playing hardball. We haven’t done that since Brian Smith left.

Better than bending over and copping up the blurter like we have for the last decade.

The average contract would be a lot closer to two years than three, wouldn't it? So who's being unreasonable here? Is it the club, or the player and his manager trying to get a long contract for a guy with a significant injury history?

Good question. I'd say the top players and captains of clubs are more likely to sign longer contracts (unless they are at the end of their careers). They might average 3 or more years

I would guess that even top players and captains would average under three years, if not by much. I might be wrong but.

Not sure how many current club captains actually leave to sign elsewhere, but James Graham and Moylan come to mind... Graham signed a 3 year contract with the Dragons and Moylan a 4 year contract with the Sharks.

Those contracts were muddied by off-field stuff and salary cap pressures and in any case those players left. In this case we're talking about the length of contract for someone who (hopefully) stays. And I reckon two-year extensions are still more common than four.

Widdop re-signed for 4 years in 2017 (but getting released) https://www.dragons.com.au/news/2017/04/22/widdop-re-signs-with-dragons/

DCE re-signed for 8 years in 2015 https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/wh...ble-for-manly-sea-eagles-20150604-ghgrho.html

Boyd re-signed for 4 years in 2017 https://www.broncos.com.au/news/2017/10/26/boyd-re-signs/

Ryan James re-signed for 3 years https://www.nrl.com/news/2017/01/17/ryan-james-re-signs-with-titans/

They were the first 4 I looked up and I can't be bothered anymore

Oh and marquee man Nathan Cleary who will soon be captain re-signed for 6 years in 2019 https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/cleary-re-signs-with-panthers-until-2024-20180924-p505m4.html

You are probably right ... 2 yrs seems the most common contract length these days .... i would imagine that is influenced by the belief that the salary cap keeps rising and players dont wanna lock in too long on what might end up unders

I also think it doesnt mean shit .... if someone is good and wants to stay then sign em up for 4 years
