Eels in the media

Taking on the captaincy makes one become a whinging merkin

I wonder if people think that of Gutho?
I did. Probably 2 seasons back or so he seemed to be constantly whinging and approaching refs with his hands out and what not. Seems to have curtailed it now, is a bit more measured now

I think opposition fans love the Gutho, and his type. Not the fastest, strongest, talented or the best. But competes on every play every week.

And most importantly, not a whinging merkin.

I've found a lot of opposition fans dislike Gutho for two reasons:

(1) his nickname, King [they feel he doesn't deserve it]; and

(2) how the media gushes over him [they feel he doesn't deserve all the praise].

Personally, I LOVE players like Gutho - may not be the fastest, strongest, or most skilful, but they are supremely fit, never give up, and inspire their team through willpower, and effort.

I love Gutherson - one of my all-time favourite players.

If he stays and leads our boys to a premiership he will be talked about within our club as one who rivals The Great Ken Thornett for popularity and performance.

1. It's funny cause it isn't as if he gave himself that nickname, nor did the team, it was Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler who said he looked a bit like Wally Lewis when he was playing #6 for us. The nickname the team gave him when he got here was lemon.

It's a very stupid reason to dislike him, tbh.

Probably a bit of tall poppy syndrome in there i would say. Any one successful these days people feel the need to drag down and bag. Plus gutho shows some personality which can be interpreted different ways depending on what team you barrack for.

Some feral manly fans yesterday were calling him queen gutho in the last 15 mins.

It's almost D-Day for Parramatta's ball-playing forward Ryan Matterson.

Matterson has an option his way with the Eels for 2022 - but it has a Round 12 deadline.

That gives the lanky forward just a few days to decide whether to remain with the Eels, or take up a more lucrative offer from a rival club.

Matterson's career move to the Eels has been a good one after a mixed stint at the Tigers and he is now firmly established as one of the game's premier edge forwards.

His dilemma is to risk that status with a shift to a less successful club than the Eels for a fistful of dollars.

My mail is he will stay - but that could change if the figures being thrown at him become too big to say no.

We have a few options at edge forward, which is a nice luxury to have. After Matterson's option deadline passes (whether he takes it or not) the club will be able to move forward with recruitment/retention.
