I think it does put the issue of the fines system in the spotlight, even more than if he'd paid the fine and spoken out about it or fought the charge, which could backfire anyway. And I don't know if his view is that he is innocent of the charge, or just that the fine is not appropriate. If this was a guy on minimum wage and not that vital to the team I'd be understandable about copping the suspension but as he's on a big wage he should have paid and just had a whinge.

I'd actually be intrigued to know the TV figures for each team. Obviously the Broncos would be quite high because they get more free to air, but it would be good to see just the Foxtel numbers.

EDIT, I've actually founds some relevant details.

What I do find interesting from this article above, is that there is now very little difference in the numbers between Foxtel and Kayo.

Also, the "Free To Air" TV audience V "Other" means (i.e. Foxtel, Kayo, Streamed another way) is almost 50/50.

Interesting, if you compare it to the AFL figures below, the 2022 NRL home and away season was watched by an estimated 118.964m viewers cumulatively over the season, at an average of 620,000 viewers per game. Total AFL audiences during the 2022 season are estimated at 106.265m, with an average audience of 537,000.

So, on average, more people watch NRL on TV.

AFL obviously gets bigger crowds at the game, but you'd think if you combined crowd numbers with TV viewers, that would be pretty close to 50/50 between AFL and NRL. Although having looked it closer, NRL is actually higher:

NRL
TV + Attendance 140.779m
Total TV Viewing hours 206.833m

AFL
Attendance + TV 133.276m
Total TV Viewing Hours 316.310m

The above NRL numbers, don't include Origin, which takes it up to TV & Attendance of 153.055m.

It's crazy that Origin is almost 10% of the entire NRL season numbers in just 3 games of around 200 matches.

Interestingly, the Top 5 NRL teams (Broncos, Souths, Storm, Panthers, Parra) are higher than all AFL Teams, with the 6 placed NRL team (Roosters) around the same as the Top AFL team (Melbourne)
