Macca’s is plop.

Seriously I haven't had anything from Macca's or Burger King(Hungry Jacks) in over 20 years, actually it wouldn't surprise me if it is closer to 30 years. It is just the worst food(poisonous cardboard) that you could eat probably of all the regular franchises in my opinion.

The old fish and chip or burger milk bars were/are way better and even healthier then those joints. But sadly they are almost a thing of the past.

Funny that you can have an opinion on something you haven't tasted for 30 years..??

I used to hate Big Macs, something about the sauce I guess... and always preferred Filet-O-Fish and Quarter Pounders etc. But lately (this year?) I started to enjoy the Big Mac and it's sauce for the first time, and now it's my go to drive-through option.

(Although I think the KFC Original Fillet Burger remains my all time favourite.)

Sorry I live in the City, so I don't venture out to the burbs much anymore I'm afraid, although I hardly remember that many being around in the eastern suburbs like they used to where I grew up. Most that I can think of have closed down or replaced by trendy takeaways or franchises.

So what you're saying is that there are the old fashioned burger and chips, I loved the old burger with the lot including cheese, bacon, egg, pineapple and beetroot and side order of hot chips, still in existence around where you live?

The last place I knew of that used to do it was in Kogarah that I would go to and get a burger with the lot and chips for $8.60(awesome price) then it closed down about 6-7 years ago now. Haven't had one since.

As for healthiness, it is a damned sight more healthy then any of that franchise crap. You must remember that a burger with the lot is ok bar the cheap cheese slice that they put on it. Also the chips were healthier too when they used to fry then in lard not these carcinogenic and heart attack inducing cheaper vegetable oils. Animal fat isn't an issue when it comes to health. Go look at the latest and real science on this issue and how saturated fat was falsely demonised by the health industry and sugar(in all its forms) and cheap oils were then promoted.

Funny that the worlds population has only gotten fatter every years since the introduction of the food pyramid that they keep promoting no matter how many health kicks people try to get into. Dieting does not work. Abstinence from what we want to eat for most is and will always be a short to medium term measure before they relapse and go crazy eating again. So what type of food did man evolve eating in the first place was it cheap and nasty oils and refined sugar in all its forms or was it animal fat and all sorts of vegetables and a little fruit now and then?

I can tell you you eat animal fat with protein and plenty of fiber in the form of complex carbohydrates and almost all your hunger and cravings go away. Then the odd indulgence doesn't impact your health in any major way. But that is my opinion and I suppose the latest and I think best science on the matter.

If you want to know more look up Ancel Keys, who was a psychologist of all things, who released a doctored and falsified study in the 50's that suggested that countries that consumed less saturated fat were less likely to develop diseases like heart attacks or strokes then countries that consumed more.

The rest as they say is history, but as they also say things are changing one death at a time. The old gate keepers are on the way out, so in about 10-20 years all this(so called new knowledge) and more will be common sense and common place. Don't shoot the messenger.

I am also a fat merkin

I'm not fat. I actually look alright for an old bugger. I carry about an inch or two around the waist more then I should, but a week or so of not having bread, pasta or rice and my abs bounce right back. My real weakness though are desserts and they will be the death of me. But I also eat a hell of a lot of animal fat in all its forms and I go swimming in virgin olive most days. Plenty of different types salads accompany most meals too, covered in said olive oil and a vinegar or fresh lemon.

Just had a cat scan just over a month or so ago and the cardiologist told me everything was as clean as a whistle and to come back in 5-7 years and to stop wasting his time.

He told me to limit my eggs and saturated fats as he thinks I must be doing and everything should be sweet. I laughed.

I don't exercise at all, which I should at least walk a little more then I do. But when I do it is only for around 20 minutes around 3 times a week. Which I need to start doing again I suppose.

When I was a kid, many milk bars were also fish and chip, burger shops, roast chicken, mixed salads, milk shakes all rolled into one. Usually run by a married European couple. For instance where the Maccas is right now on the corner at Coogee beach it was one of these types of milk bars and owned and run by one of my school mates dads and his uncle.

My mates and I would often go there and just sit down and eat a big plate of hot chips covered in salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce or white vinegar or go and feed the seagulls with some stale bread his dad would give us. This usually occurred after we came back from getting an eye full of naked titties from over at Thompsons(Gordons Bay) Bay next door. Boys defiantly had a huge appetite by then.
